Why was this game in particular, so heavily attended and how much higher was it then our second highest ever?

I ask, because as far as I know, we didn't regularly get attendances close to this at the time (though we did get high ones every so often).

The second highest is 62,000 odd for the 4th round of the Cup in 1926. We were the holders, and lost 2-1 to Sunderland.

FA Cup games often attracted much bigger gates than league games. There were a lot more "floating" fans who would go for a really big game, and the Cup was a really big deal. This was the case even 30 years or so ago. I remember seeing United play Barnsley in the Cup in 1990 in front of 33000 and then in the league a few weeks later (when we were chasing promotion) in front of about 16,000.

63 of the 92 clubs in the league had their record attendance in the FA Cup.

What is our highest league crowd?

If they declared 68000 and odd it is fairly safe to assume it was more like 90000

A hell of a drop from the previous round even taking into account the lack of 'derby' factor.
Hard times though wasn't it in the 30's...wasn't it the Great Depression in that period which could be an explanation .I remember my Dad telling me he spent a year down south as my Grandad had to go and find work.He used to tell me that we had a good side back then though under Teddy Davison.
