It must have been some atmosphere, 68,287 against Leeds in the 5th Round of the FA Cup. Was that our capacity at that time, or did they just cram as many as possible into the ground?

I think the Big JG said that there were 40k on the Kop for that game, when I did the tour a couple of years ago

A lot were standing on the cricket pitch, particularly as it became increasingly foggy. And apparently a lot of people

I guess Leeds fans claim the crowd was due to their away support.

My Grandfather was in the BL end and they couldn't see the opposite goal because of the fog. In those days, if the referee could see both goals from the centre circle, the match was on!! In the famous picture of the day (a copy of which hangs on my Dads wall), there are thousands stood on the cricket pitch. Those people were let in for nothing as there were huge crowds outside and they opened the gates. The quoted crowd was well below what they reckon the actual number was but United being United, they chose not to add the numbers to the crowd figure. Of course, had that been our feathered brethren, they would have added at least another 20k to the gate to further prove their massiveness.

Funnily enough, I was speaking to my Dad about this only yesterday as his Dad and Uncle decided that it was probably a good idea not to take my Dad - he was 5 at the time - because of the weather!!

My Grandad was there. The Kop was jammed. He told me that he saw someone have his watch stolen (a pocket watch on a chain) but the crowd was so tight that the thief couldn't escape and got caught (and got a beating).

The low crowd the following round was indeed a reaction to the discomfort of the first game, and the fact that no one saw much because of the fog.

Fun fact: Barnsley's record attendance - just over 40,000 - was set on the same day in a 5th round tie against Stoke City.

It were a cracking atmosphere. Locals were hiring out ladders for us kids to get over the wall to watch. Had a bag-o-chips ont walk home.

Why was this game in particular, so heavily attended and how much higher was it then our second highest ever?

I ask, because as far as I know, we didn't regularly get attendances close to this at the time (though we did get high ones every so often).
