Bramall lane myth

Home atmospheres at all stadiums leave a lot to be desired. Home crowds generally wait to be entertained before responding.

Away fans will nearly always outsing the home support. Day out, ale, more “hardcore” fans all sat together”….just how it is and how it’s been for a long time.

When in the mood Bramall Lane is one of the better grounds for atmosphere in the country.
I thought a few days later against Blackburn was better, bashan got sent off

Constantly hear from pundits how we more than other clubs missed our fans during covid and how raucous bramall lane is.I personally think it’s exaggerated so much and it’s just an assumed tag due to our working class fan base and a decent belt out of GCB before kick off.

Most games I have been to in recent years have been average at best bar Man Utd and West Ham.This season has been even worse.Literally just a handful of people at the top corner of the kop chanting.Cant complain too much as I sit on the south and don’t chant myself. But I’m just puzzled by the amazing bramall lane atmosphere tag.
Most games you have been to?

I can only think you’ve hardly been to any.

As others have said, like everything else*, the atmosphere at football grounds isn’t what it used to be.

(* Curly Wurlys were bigger, dog turds were white, and The Simpsons were funnier)

But that applies to all football grounds, not just ours.

Here’s an independent, non-biased view on which football grounds have the best atmospheres. And guess who is top (and who is 41st)?

So how’s about we stop beating ourselves up (we’re pretty good at that too) and accept that Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane is still a beautiful place to be?

After the last season of pretty much doom laden failure, the new manager seems to have engendered some optimism, with the potential for exciting players, playing good style of attacking football.

This is against our gritty working class underdog ethos, so beloved by fans. Yes, we still like to undermine any opposition fans who look down on us, or an apparent bias against to us from match officials and pundits.

Two opposing sides to the same coin. Hard to reconcile both outlooks. :) (sigh)

Another myth is that the atmosphere was always a 'bear pit' in Warnock era. As now, it was also very hit and performance/incident dependent. Atmosphere (or lack thereof) was often raised - even by Warnock in post match interviews.

BDTBL isnt a dependable continent style carnival, it's completely dynamic.

Towards the end of the Warnock era the football was so boring (you'd be lucky to see three shots on goal between the teams) and the crowds were generally fairly lifeless. I used to sit behind the dugout because hearing him screach was more entertaining.

I agree and disagree with this one. I think the tag from commentators is a lazy cliché in some ways. Some games are absolutely unreal in terms of atmosphere and noise while others are utter shit. And as someone who sits at the very back of the kop, I should know.

One of the best in recent years was Derby at home on boxing day. Wow.

Then you get the shit like Reading at home. Absolutely nothing club with nothing fans who don't generate anything from that end that you might want to drown out.

So again, I agree and disagree with the OP. The Birmingham example is a good one though. As you say, 18 months away and you'd have expected it to be buzzing.

Having said that, I think half the crowd were still queuing at the bar.

It's the same cliche that we are dangerous from set pieces as another Norwood corner hits the first man.

Home games are shit atmospheres compared to away games where most are halfway through a day session in an enclosed crowd.

Hi Stegosaurus here

I think our atmosphere is fine. People are just thinking its poor in comparison to notoriously loud fanbases like Sunderland, Leeds, Wednesday, Wolves and Pompey.

If it looks like a pig, walks like a pig and grunts like a pig....then it's probably a pig or possibly someone who likes a bit of mischief! 😄

Fans are the same everywhere you go

Their team is either on the front foot and attacking = noise

Or they are struggling to get hold of the ball, or point blank refusing to move out of their own half regardless of the opposition = silence

You might all want to ask why a very noisy, raucous support has gradually been reduced to silence

We have just come off the back of the most incredible few seasons in most our lifetime. From midtable L1 to top 10 in The Premier League in 5 seasons. With no huge money man behind us. A proper improable one off period.

Now we are back at a level where most us have known as a United fan but with the added burden that we are one of the favorites to go up. It's not hard to understand why the atmosphere isn't as great.

Used to be but far from it now & yes some crackin atmospheres under the lights that pundits quote .. Leeds League Cup , Scousers in LC SF etc and the PL season under Warnock . One big difference though ..the lads that made the noise in that era were congregated in same areas and had been for a good while , back of the Kop , South Stand H etc but during our demise in L1 some of the support dwindled … come the Wikder era a lot started coming back but they are sat in small pockets amongst the library crowd hence no collective noise .., Fuchs me off no end .. I’m in Westfield Corner and it’s 50/50 with the lads who get behind the team & the mutes ⚔️⚔️

To be honest the club do absolutely nothing to get the crowd going less than 10 years ago we would have a couple of huge flags being passed around the kop before kick off what ever happened to them? You are now discouraged to take anything much bigger than a tea towel in the ground let alone a flag on a stick that you can wave around. If it was good for the ladies Euro game why can't fans take flags in for the men's game are men more likely to catch fire than women? You'd think so when the fire regs excuse gets trotted out. Oh and get slaphead to play some music that the crowd can join in with other than just the most dreary anthem in football "the greasy chip butty song" .................. there I've said it TIN HAT ON & diving into a bunker.

"The Lord revealed to me during a dream, that one amongst you carries a tea towel..."
