I may be in the minority but I prefer the ground as it was in these pictures & I was only six years old in 1991. It just brings back faded memories of going with my dad, getting a bag of cola cubes, him going through the turnstile & me being let through the big gates. It's obviously all happy memories and nostalgia but it just feels like proper football.

it's the big things that count at that age.

Not the goals, the tackles or the pitch action, but the Cola Cubes!

This photo cropped up this morning which most of us will have seen before.

I used to go on the West Terrace in those days.

One thing that strikes me is how high the front of the stand is to get that flag on and what they're all stood on (doesn't look like the seats).

I've sat on the South F/G/H for 20 odd years now but I can't remember there being anything at the front of the stand like that.

I took my 3 year old to the Plymouth game before Christmas. He'd never really been that bothered with football (more into cars and monster trucks atm), but he has a kit and wants to wear it when I wear my shirt etc.

Yesterday we sat and he saw a picture of the lane on my phone, and said Daddy look Sheffield United. He then proceeded to tell me about his day there and what he saw, and then asked if we could go again.

Nearly cried. Reyt soft me now. Lol

Does anyone know what year they made the changes to Bramall Lane lower end and what exactly the they did? Looks like they possibly extended the lower tier in front of the pillars. Too young to remember it looking like this.
I sat on there 1995 v Tranmere (I think). Lower tier was for home fans that year. So I guess it was that summer perhaps.

The stand was extended in front of the pillars, with a concourse built behind them. You can see the pillars today at the back of the lower tier.

Edit... definitely 95-96 season. We played and lost to Tranmere first home game.

Think the top photo is at the front of the South Stand, the supporters are stood on the old dug outs.

About 1994 I think , remember sitting in there when we lost at home to Notts County.. yes they extended out in front of the pillars ⚔️

I do miss standing, it was far more sociable. You could arrange to meet people and all be stood together.

Absolutely correct.

Being unable to pay on the turnstile has removed all spontaneity from attending games so attendances are slow to react to a team performing well.

Then seating has removed the easy social element of meeting up with different numbers of mates and standing together.

Everything has to be preplanned.

You can't just phone a mate on the spur of the moment and say , let's go down to the Lane today and then he says OK , I'll bring another mate with me.

Most of the changes militate against a relaxed and flexible social experience.

So you end up with a ST with a couple of mates and those 3 seats are fixed , there's no chance for growth in support by the introduction of new mates like it used to happen in my young adult days in the 70s.

Take our stunning start to the 71/72 first season back in the top flight.

First home game 25k , then Leeds at home , then sitting top of the league after 10 games and gates over 40k.

Even if there was capacity , you could never get that kind of growth these days unless you had a large section of unallocated standing , which will not happen.
Then people wonder why the atmosphere isn't what it used to be.

Almost all my best experiences following the Blades over the years have been while standing on a terrace , those being the John Street one at the Lane and any number of others at away grounds where , by avoiding trying to go on their kop, me and my mates never had any trouble and enjoyed the banter with the home fans .

Even at places like Old Trafford and Anfield we could turn up without tickets and comfortably get into the ground providing we arrived there early enough .

I appreciate that there are a number of reasons why this situation has changed over the years , but is to me just another example of how much simpler and more pleasurable most things in life were back then .

State of the pitch, that would sort some of the prima Donna's out among today's players.
it amuses me now that the dug out was only big enough for the manager and the magic ponge man
Im sure an immediate application of the magic sponge would instatly heal a cruciate ligament tear in those days

Would love safe standing to be implemented on the Kop, might help with the atmosphere too!

If memory serves me right, there were benches in front of the south stand. I remember Bassett sitting on a bench with Geoff Taylor when I first went in 88, or am I losing my mind?

I'm with you on this Whiston but my time for proper football even pre dates yours. It's obviously a generational thing but can you imagine what football will be like in 25-30 years time for today's new crop of supporters to look back nostalgically at football now.

Ill help you look for it,,,, no the dug outs were built for 2,, no free kick coaches or assistants in those days, of course a bench in front was the cheap option
