Good to see that Man Utd, Ipswich, and the Spammers were shit even back then.

Had Ipswich been on the pop all day on Christmas Day, and then travelled to Fulham after rolling out of a house party in the early hours of Boxing Day morning?

Pretty sure that was the game that sparked George Best's debut. After that tanking they fetched him back from Ireland to play in the follow up game against Burnley a couple of days later and apparently he tore them several new ones.

66 goals in one day. Looking at todays fixtures, i reckon 20 goals max.

His debut was at WBA in Sept 1963 but you are right that he didnt play in the 6-1 defeat to Burnley but played two days later and Man U won 5-1 against the same opponents!

They will have been boozing Christmas Eve and all day Christmas Day. Back then men were men.... and so were the women :)

Imagine Jeff Sterling having to keep tabs on that lot. He’d have certainly earned his money that day

Much better results if you let teams get absolutely plastered the night before.

You've got to be of a 'certain age' to have experienced Christmas Day footie at Bramall Lane. My first experience was in 1948 as a 9-year-old. My dad and I had to walk from Millhouses since no trams were running. I've forgotten what time it kicked off but it was probably around 11.00am. We played Bolton Wanderers and drew 1-1. We then walked home and had our Christmas dinner. The Blades played the return match at Bolton two days later - and lost 1-6. I wonder if a few of our side had enjoyed Christmas a bit too much?!
