February we play Scunny and then bolton at home in successive Saturday fixtures. If the top 3 are still the same in February then those will be very important games for all three clubs.
 
We win, and keep winning, the rest will take care of itself.
 
Get a grip. Irrespective of what Bolton or Scunny do, United will hit a sticky patch soon. Mid Jan to mid Feb is my bet. And anyone who thinks the league is 3-horse race after 22 games had better wake up now. You can bet at least a couple of teams will go on a winning streak between now and May 2017. I'm willing to gamble that United will be top 2 but Scunny and Bolton won't.
 
Obviously a Bolton win is the worst case scenario. It's then a question of would we rather 'consolidate' second with Scunthorpe winning, or somewhat meet half way and prefer a 0-0 draw.

Personally, I'd rather Scunny win as I still think they will start to struggle, whereas I can see Bolton lasting longer (pending admin). However a draw would not be a bad result either.

All assuming we win of course!
 
I'd take 7 points from next 3 right now. I'd love 9 obviously. (and form would suggest we should). It would then be a case of looking at others results. We can only control our own results, and it's a case of just keep going. Let others worry about us and hope when the blip comes ('cos it will) we get over it quickly and other results are favourable during that period.

In my opinion, Scunny would need to lose their three main goal winners to injury, to start to struggle. Josh Morris, Kevin Van Veen and Paddy Madden all scoring on a fairly regular basis (Madden, a hat trick in their last game), people keep saying Scunthorpe will fall away (as have other teams in recent years who started off well, like Tranmere and Gillingham), but I just don't see it.

Same here, I reckon Scunny are the real deal too. Seem to have coped pretty easily with a fair few injuries so far, & they've got classy midfielders who haven't really featured much so far (Mantom, Adelakun) - got a very decent, deep squad by the looks of things.

One good thing is that, although Josh Morris has been on fire this season, his goalscoring seems to have dwindled recently - not scored in about a month and a half. Long may that continue (tho I've probably jinxed it now).

Don't give a shit about the title. Just automatics for us, please.

The bigger air gap we can put between ourselves and the fucking playoffs, the better. We'll deal with Scunthorpe on the run in. If they get the title, so what. I just want United in the Championship and some more purchases to keep us there.

Ideally Bradford beat Scunny then Scunny and Bolton draw. That could see us top at the turn of the year with a little gap over Bolton if we do our bit. Oldham have a knack of nicking something at the lane though....

They've started to falter, as evidenced by the points margin decreasing.

I'd also suspect someone will come in for at least one of the players you've mentioned and given Scunthorpe's small status, will potentially struggle to keep hold of them.

I am not an expert on Scunthorpe's finances, but many others on here have said that their owner is very rich and money is not an issue.

That'll be a useful mid season break and should help keep our players fresh going into the second half of the season. Wilder will use the possible time off as an incentive before the Bury game.

2nd is not good enough,
Yes, you get promotion, but to not actively seek better than 2nd in the Third Division is failure as far as I'm concerned.

I'm glad that just for once we seem to be going about our business with the view that we are after top spot and will not let it out of our sights.

Too often we have set the bar at the bare minimum where failure means total failure

The answer to the original question by the way is a Scunny win for me.
I still believe Bolton will provide the biggest threat in the end and as much daylight as we can put between them and ourselves would be useful
 
Bradford need to win on Boxing day to keep in touch with top 3.
Bantems win on BD.

I'll explain this as best as I can so that hopefully you understand it.

In the old days of 2 points for a win, you either got all the points (ie: 2) for a win or you shared the points (ie: 1 each). No points were lost anywhere.

Now, you get 3 points for a win and still 1 point each for a draw.

So, where does the other point go? It is lost (to everyone) and seeing as both are our closest rivals it is the best option.

Then if you asked a Scunthorpe fan, or a Bolton fan both of them would probably answer

"This game is must win for us, because Sheffield United are bang in form, scoring goals left right and centre and we need to win this game to shake the other team off"

Both of them will be scrapping for their lives because they know and fear us,and know that we are the team who look more than ready to take this league by the scruff of the neck, and i think it will take a huge effort for anyone to get even close to us this season.
 
I think the answer depends on two further questions:

1. Do you think Bolton or Scunthorpe will finish higher?
2. Is your ambition to finish as champions or just achieve promotion?

If you think Bolton will finish above Scunthorpe and you want to win the title, hope for a Scunthorpe win.

If you think Bolton will finish above Scunthorpe and you just want safe promotion, hope for a Bolton win.

I'm hoping for a draw ;)
 
Doesnt matter for us what the result is, it matters to the teams playing! Simply because it is a "do not lose" match for them.
All parties will probably be happy with a draw.

Hadnt realised that table - shame we started slowly although having been at both Bolton and Millwall we shouldnt have lost either - a draw at Bolton would have been very useful in view of recent results but at least we have recovered and for the first time for years we are in touch with the leaders instead of looking over the distance and hoping
