Bollocks season thoughts

A goal got disallowed.

That's it.

Everybody keeps saying we were robbed of 3 points which is bollocks.

The match could have ended 10-1 or 1-10 and every other permutation you can think of.

Nobody knows or ever will know.

Just forget about it and move on.

The facts are we were shite against Newcastle, Man Utd, Leicester and Everton.

We only have ourselves to blame.

I’d say we were pretty much guaranteed three points in the game at Villa Park in the Championship with just the 10 minutes to play let alone 45.

Although, I do think we would have just about ground out those three points that night (we weren’t very good let’s be honest), but all this talk of legal challenges is nonsense. There’s not a lawyer in the world who could justify using that argument in court. They’d be laughed out.

Luck always plays a part in a teams season

I just don't agree with that and I never will.

We'll either finish 8th, 9th or 10th and that is exactly where we will deserve to finish.

Liverpool were incredible and deserved to win the league. Norwich were shite and deserved to finish bottom.

All this constant arguing about referees and VAR is complete bollocks in my opinion.

So game finishes 0-0, but we have a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed, but we weren’t robbed of 3 points? Really? Villa wouldn’t have scored if we were still playing now.

And that's fine, that is your opinion, but I'm not arguing about refs and VAR am I, I don't know how many times I must say that 😂.

I do believe luck plays a part in a season and I don't just mean VAR and refs, but those lucky 50/50 bounces that one game go our way and the next go the other.

Football is a game with many variables, the only one of which we can control is how we play, I can probably count on one hand the amount of games I have been genuinely disappointed with how we have played since Wilder has been in charge and would you believe that 3 of them are the games you mentioned, I mean who would have ever thought I'd be disappointed with how we played against Man Utd when I came into this season with some what limited expectations, our play has made those expectations rise dramatically.

No because he is right anything could have happened after the half, the game changes, we could have won by 3, or lost.

Obviously because we are aware of this teams ability then we know we probably would have won, but we can't say that for sure can we.

Now that I have calmed down from the Everton game I can truly say it has been an amazing season overall if someone had told me we would be 8th in the premier league with 1 game of the premier league season i would have told you to go and get your head checked.

I had belief in Chris Wilder Alan Knill and the team but I have to say they have surpassed anything I thought possible in our first season absolutely unreal and so proud of the CW AK and the team overall of how well we have done as a team.

I just hope the Prince backs CW in the transfer market next season and who knows what we can achieve UTB

Those things are not mutually exclusive.

It's undeniable that there is an element of luck to the game, but over the season teams still end up round about where they deserve to.

You are correct to a degree. But let's not pretend the chances of winning a game are not far greater from the position of 1-0 than that of 0-0. When winning at half time since January 2014, our record has shown this. What is it? 95 matched, 80 wins and 15 draws?

I also don't subscribe to luck evening itself out. If it did then we'd be looking forward to having a ball that didn't cross the line being given as a goal for starters.

I am also less keen on blaming everything on it.

The stats on Man U show 2 things:
1. They get into positions in the penalty area frequently enough to attract challenges which require the refs to make a decision.
2. They get enough of those go their way to suggest some of the softer ones are also being given in their direction.

I suppose the argument there is that you have to buy a ticket.

I can think of the handball vs Southampton and the foul on Basham at Norwich which somehow contrived to give us nothing. Having seen the Porto goal earlier this week where the lad comes back from being in an offside position to score, I'm not convinced how United managed to be given neither the goal for which Lunny did similar nor the penalty.

To the OP it has been an excellent season. Let's hope the lads keep their foot on the gas for one more game. 4-5m would sure be handy in the current climate. That was a hell of a lot of money one season ago for us. As we've been consistently better than Burnley and Arsenal it would be a shame to let them pass us at the last knockings.

I'll answer but have no idea what you're wittering on about. Man Utd got 19 penalties because generally their attackers spend much more time running at defenders in and around the box than we do. Simple enough to understand really. I dont watch all Manchester United's matches so have no idea how many were spurious decisions.
So they get in the box more the the other top 4/6 teams? Rhubarb

If you'd have said at the start of the season somewhere between 8th and 10th, I'd have taken that all day long.

As it is, slightly disappointed that the European spots are beyond us, and who'd have thought we'd ever be thinking that?

So, great season that like many things in life that are far more serious, knackered by Covid 19.

Still a job well done, hopefully investment in the right areas in the shorter close season so we can kick on.

Read the post again wise guy, where did I say that. The fact is their attackers run at defenders in and around the box more than ours. Our play inevitably leads to balls into the area from wide positions. I believe the term is overload. You seen us play at all this season?

I thought this was going to be a thread to celebrate our team's achievements this season, but then it descends into a quabble about luck and decisions.

That's a shame because it detracts from the achievement. Look at Norwich, won the Championship in style but now comfortably bottom with only 21 points. Villa - spent a gazillion quid and still hanging by a thread. We've spent conservatively compared to other clubs but still managed to retain the core of the squad. Just about every one of them has made the big step up, particularly the midfield and defence.

I look back over the season and perhaps we've had maybe half a dozen where we haven't played well or maintained our standards. That's incredibly consistent over 38 games. I think most seasons I remember from pre-Wilder, we were lucky if we played our best 6-8 times a season. That's the big difference to me that Wilder has made - whenever you watch us, you can almost guarantee we'll put in a shift, work very hard, compete and give our all... at the very least. I was struggling to say that half a dozen times a season before.

I'm not worried about next season, yes we might not have Henderson, we might not finish as high as this season, but I'm damn sure that Wilder will still have us disciplined, working hard and competing in nearly every game and that gives us a great platform to do well again.
