I ended up really liking Bob Hatton but, like many Unitedites, I was very unhappy when the news broke that we were interested in signing him because he was a bit of a "hate" figure at Bramall Lane as a result of an incident a few years earlier when he'd become involved in what can only be described as a fight with either Eddie Colquhoun or Mick Speight. My recollection is that he and Speight/Colquhoun were sent off but I'm struggling to identify the game in question despite having a good look through the Denis Clarebrough book. Perhaps Silent could help with this.

Anyway, he was a great hit at the Lane, very popular with the fans and ultra-reliable in front of goal. He's one of a number of successful signings over the years of players in their thirties, signings which didn't exactly thrill us when announced but which turned out to be inspired: Gordon Cowans, Stuart McCall and Neil Shipperley all spring to mind. Paul McGrath was great but was with us only for a very short time and I also thought Nicky Marker was a very reliable player, too. I'd add Bill Punton to that list, if only for the one league goal he scored for us against Wednesday in front of the Kop in 1967, the game's only goal.

It will be the 1-0 home defeat against Birmingham in February 1973. I didnt go to the game because I was in bed with flu. I remember my dad coming home from the match saying "Rubbish game". That evening I was reading the Green Un and in the "Late Press" column on the front page it said that Bob Hatton of Birmingham got sent off for fighting but I do not remember reading who was the Blade player he fought with

Thanks, Silent. In my mind it was a night match but I think I might be getting it mixed up with another incident, possibly involving Phil Boyer. If I'm right, Boyer had a fight with whichever one out of Speight and Colquhoun that Hatton didn't! Again, I'm struggling to place it.

Boyer and Colquhoun got sent off for fighting in the League Cup 4th round tie in November 1974. Match ended in a 2-2 draw. I wasnt at the match because I was at boarding school. In the next morning an older pupil at school said we won either 2-0 or 2-1 and I got elated, my Norwich mate was feeling dejected. after breakfast I went to my classroom to read the match report of the match. I was surprised and disappointed that the score was actually 2-2 and I looked at a photo of Colquhoun and Boyer walking off the pitch. My Norwich mate was in sweeping duties at the dining room that morning so I decided to go back to the dining room to tell him the actual score. His mood changed quickly and he wanted to hug me but I pushed him away!

It was a joy to behold but I never quite worked out how he did it or how to replicate it.
Bamboozled many a defender with that one he did.

So, it was Speight v Hatton and Boyer v Colquhoun.

It's coming back to me now that Eddie carried on fighting with Boyer as they left the pitch/went down the tunnel.

interesting you should say that - I did actually watch him do it, and sorry, mastered it.

Was stood near the front of the kop when we played Northampton one Tuesday night (7-3 I think) and he did it near the goal line.

Used to use it in matches, but preferred the TC turn more (for obvious reasons)

Hatton did it every time with just the left foot.

I lived in Brum during the mid 1970's and went to watch Birmingham play a few times. Their front three in those days were Bob Latchford, Trevor Francis and Bob Hatton. The former two went on to other clubs commanding high fees. Bob Hatton moved from club to club for what seemed to be modest transfer fees.

He seemed to be the poor relation and yet when I watched them play it was always Hatton that appeared the best striker.

I was delighted when we signed him. He was right for us at the right time.

Not much of a fight actually. Boyer swung a punch and Eddie knocked the shit out of him. Backed him off the pitch punching all the way. Photo in the Star or Morning Telegraph showed them walking towards the touch line after being sent off, EC looking stern but undamaged while Boyer had blood on his face, a torn shirt collar looking like he'd been run over. Copped for plenty more in the tunnel rumour has it.
 
Before my time but seen the video footage. Seems heroic and scored a few goals. I'd like to add Mark Patterson to the list of decent 30 plus in age signings. His signing went down like a fart in a space suite because he was 31 and he'd been swapped for our top scorer Nathan Blake, but Patterson turned out to be quality in those Kendall days and did us proud. Really good tackler and better at passing than some said he was.

In the title winning season in division four we went to Hartlepool and won 2=1 and at half time went to the bog for a waz and Bob Hatton was in their in full kit doing the business, , was a terrible ground short on facilities, he was moaning there was only one toilet in the changing room and someone was having a dump
