Afternoon all, as promised, new pod is out:

Roygbiv and I savouring a derby double, strong performances from Seriki and Peck, Rhian Brewster grabbing the headlines, Wilder's post-match interview and plenty more. Cheers for listening and UTB!

Loved it.

On a returning theme, George Hirst just had his first Scotland call up ;)

Thanks lads, a brilliant, jubilant listen. Roy is right, they had us convinced for a minute that they were a lot better than they actually are. I think they are better than Preston who lacked any competitive element (though you would expect more effort levels) but Wednesday are what they are, mid table. Their position is no miracle, as they have a sprinkling of players who can compete in the Championship. The fans keep parroting this amazing achievement, but it is only based on where they started when he took over. He has had a full season and I have to say I’m not that impressed.

If its an "amazing achievement" to get them mid table then they are in real trouble when he leaves...

I can’t help but compare it to Wilder’s first Championship season after promotion. That was a true test, a genuine League One squad that was fantastically coached and only just missed out on the play offs. I don’t think Rohl’s position at the start of this season is comparable - he had a side that he knew could compete in that division, and made some additions to improve it. But I don’t think they will end up on the same points we did that season. And I don’t think he will stick around to finish the job, as Wilder did the following season.

Andrew mentioned an excellent point that doesn’t receive enough publicity.

You look at the in game stats, shots at goal and the XG stats and conclude it was a close game and a draw would have been fair.

However this has been the situation for at least 50% of our matches this season.
The lazy conclusion is `’we must have been incredibly lucky”.

I accept the luck factor over 1 game or maybe 5 games but over a sample size of 30 odd matches, logically it can’t be luck.
No team can ever be lucky every time they play, we have a resilience and quality to ensure we win almost every match.
Hence why we’re on target to be one of the best teams to ever play in the Champiomship.

Andrew rightly suggested
Let’s say there was no deflection on the Campbell pass, so Brewster doesn’t score his tap in.
Well this seasons matches shows we’d have kept attacking and creating chances until we did score.
It’s been a frustration for me that once we score…we tend to take our foot off the pedal and sit back inviting pressure
However this tactic has worked every match apart from the recent Bristol City home game. So can’t complain.

Also the “if, buts and maybe” excuses from Wednesday fans are tiresome.
They say if Windass and Smith had scored their chances they’d have won 2-1 but they didn’t because they are upper league 1 standard players.
If any of their chances went in….we’d have simply stepped it up….took some risks and more than likely won 2-1.
It’s like saying if Rhian Brewster scored all his chances he’d be a top PL striker…agree he would but he didn’t’.
Or if we had beaten Leeds and Burnley we’d now be points clear at the top of the league….agree we would but we didn’t.

Eyup S2, with Roygbiv being on holiday (questionable timing) I'm very pleased to have Anna Kent of Rainbow Blades rejoining me to talk about United's impressive win over Coventry (and some more thoughts on the win at Hillsborough, because why not). We talk about the promotion run-in, before ending the podcast with a look at United Women's battle against relegation and what it could mean if they fall out of the women's Championship.

Thanks very much to Anna, and to anyone for listening. Cheers.

Hurrah!

If memory serves did Tony McMahon score 2 free kicks in the same game against Crawley during the L1 stint? Dark days.

Enjoyed listening on train to Filey. Great to hear Anna again but if we play really well when she doesn’t go then can she stay away for the rest of the season? 🤣
Best of luck to the women’s team but sounds like they need it.

Great listen as ever even if it was to analyse two pretty lame 1-0 defeats.

It was so un-Wilder like not to change the team after Oxford. Even if we've won on the Saturday, he makes changes for a midweek game.
My mate called the subs when we saw Cannon, O'Hare and Souza getting ready. If anything, they made us worse because we really offered nothing up top once Cannon came on, as you guys said, not his game. I'm wondering what will be his game because I've seen nothing from him. Surely Moore would have been a better option to give their defenders something to think about and as you said, use his strength and hold the ball up.

One thing that was annoing me is that when we did get their defence running back towards their goal, we kept checking and then passing it sideways and back so by the time tried to get into the box they had 8 or 9 men back behind the ball. I felt we needed to play more early balls in while they were still running back towrds their goal.

Set pieces are also a cause of great annoyance. What happened to the innovative ones we used to do when Wilder and Knill first came to the club? The general tactic now for corners appears to be for all the players to stand in a line and fight with their players and then the ball hits their first man every time when it finally comes in.

There was another farcial moment in the first half where we got a free kick on the right and typically played in backwards and it ended up on the left side of our box with Robbo and Choudhury panicking and I think in the end Cooper had to clear it out of play.

Might not be a popular opinion but I'm now comfortable finishing third and failing gallantly in the play offs. Give this team another season in the Championship so the likes of Peck, Blaster and Seriki can develop and we win more than we lose. As it stands, this team would suffer a similar fate to the one from last season. We're just not ready for the Premier League and I think it would do more harm than good.

Thanks lads you always help put things into perspective
I genuinely question why I care so much after nights like last night, I don't get this stressed about life or death things I'm pretty relaxed and laid back about most things that cause high anxiety for others but the Blades get me in some right states like for example last night I couldn't sleep and today have felt totality drained mentally and physically
Crazy isn't it?

Good pod Beans Roygbiv

Think for me, the tl;dr takeaway from that is Wilder is an average tactician and performances haven't been much different from many other games.

However he is a great man manager, but when that starts to fade having an impact is when we start to get into trouble results wise.

Well that could've gone better. Roygbiv and I discuss a possible season-breaking week, at least until the playoffs start or it all flips on its head again in a week or so...

Thanks for the pod, listening to it reminded me of Wilder's "we'll play through you, round you, or over you" comment.

Oxford and Millwall i saw none of the 3 (maybe give or take 10 minutes when Moore was on v Oxford)

Hello all, recorded a quite cathartic discussion with Roygbiv just now on the Plymouth game, the season as a whole, and what comes next for the club and Wilder (apart from the playoffs, duh). If you listen, hope you enjoy:

Might just show it as listened to so you get the hit lads. I’ve been avoiding talking about Plymouth and not sure I’m ready yet

“[We might have better players, but] if you’re gonna play low margin games, then occasionally they’re gonna come back and bite you” sums it up perfectly, Ben.

And what Andrew said about us looking like a preseason team that haven’t got to grips with themselves yet is also spot on

Oxford was a perfect example of that

It’s a bit weird. Anyhoo, can’t wait for Friday. UTB

Cheers boys

My take away from that podcast was “we don’t need to change the manager, the manager needs to change” but they both seemed to think his stubbornness will get in the way!
