Just feel a bit deflated really rather than angry. I keep going from feeling really downbeat about it all to almost finding it funny. Always stuck up for this team in terms of effort but there's no defending yesterday
The bit that gets me is that we hadn’t really seen anything to suggest this was coming in the games prior.

Went with a neutral mate. Half time he says this could be brutal. Nah, I said. Stays 3-0. Fuck me.

47 years. Never left early. I have now. 6-0. Couldn’t watch any more. Was in fucking Chesterfield at full time.

Yeah I'm really struggling to make sense of it. Obviously we have been lucky to not get hammered in other games this season but that was down to a lack of quality. Yesterday was a total surrender with absolutely no fight. Just bizarre from this team

I don’t know about anyone else but if we take another pasting at West Ham this weekend then the following week’s Saturday night 8pm game against Man U is looking a very tempting one to be watched at home or down the pub with a few beers..

I’ve never seen anyone walk through the middle of us time and time again. Callum Wilson was shocked how bad we were in his post match.

I think we do need you and Beans to get this off your chests in a pod. You need it and we need it.

Have been in denial. Now moved on to anger. A head must roll for this. Not Hecky per se. But that defensive coach? He’s got to go. Zero credibility. We need a head on a pike for this. And he fits the bill.

I felt utterly wank this mornin. Totally despondent. Normally I can shake off a defeat, but fucking hell, this one’s poisonous

Shots conceded (on target) this season:

vs Palace: 24 (8)
vs Forest: 16 (4)
vs City: 30 (9)
vs Everton: 16 (6)
vs Spurs: 28 (10)
vs Newcastle: 22 (15)

I think we did see signs that it was coming. That was actually our third best game in terms of shots against us!

Jesus Christ that makes for bad reading. You never really realise when physically at the game but that is shocking.

Good point, well made.

I wonder out of interest what would be the median number of shots conceded per game by a lower half team over the last few seasons? Have we been badly under-performing this? I have no idea how to find this out, but perhaps someone can?

It’s only been six games so I’d expect (hope!) this will come down, but we’re currently miles worse than any team last season in terms of shots allowed per 90 and shots on target per 90.

Bournemouth averaged 16 shots against per game last season, worst in the league - we’re currently running at 22.

Bournemouth allowed a shade over 5 shots on target per game, worst in the league - we’re currently allowing 8.7 😬

Edit: One more for fun, our expected goal difference per game this season is -1.8. So opponents have basically been 2 goals better than us in every game.

In a word, fuck.

We’re aiming to record tomorrow but I’m not sure I have the energy to get stuck in. I left at 6-0 (I think, it was hard to keep track, but they scored another before I left the ground) as I realised I’d rather spend the time with my wife and kids than watch any more.

Maybe I’ll have moved onto the angry phase by tomorrow!

Edit: that reads like only losing 8-0 at home would make me want to spend time with my wife and kids. I mean that I realised I could get back for bath and bedtime if I left then!

Err aren’t you meant to be the optimistic one? We must be screwed!

I think that baton has been passed to some other accounts over the summer 😂 I always aimed for “realism” / semi-objectivity and there wasn’t much filling me with optimism going into the season.

to be fair this is the first game since Palace that I didn’t enjoy, and even then I thought we played pretty well Sunday for about 30 mins…

Has Deadbat picked up the optimistic baton?

Understand if you don’t fancy it, but even after an 8-0 defeat I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts about it.

Btw, the last 2 goals were (as per pretty much all the rest of the goals from Sunday) absolutely criminally embarrassing from a defensive point of view.

Oh we’ll definitely do a pod, don’t worry. Looks like tomorrow now though, apologies - had some family commitments pop up today.

So Wes has faced 52 shots on target in 6 games, conceding 17.

67% save rate.

He’s definitely not the problem!

Worth highlighting the 6 games point. What was Bournemouth's stats after 6 games?

It's a shocking stat all the same for a side that defends deep and prides itself on being solid.

In terms of conceding, Newcastle is also an outlier in those first 6 games as prior to this game our GD was superior to the bottom 4 sides below us (Everton, Burnley and Luton)

absolutely 💯

Hi all, here's the post-Newcastle episode. Thanks for your patience, didn't have time yesterday and now I've got bloody covid (again) so apologies if this is even more low-powered than you might expect for an 8-0 tonking.

If you extract the (hopefully) freak result on Sunday and the Man City match, how much does the expected goal difference come down by? It doesn’t feel like the opposition have been that much better than us in the other games.

As soon as I have finished reading the local obituaries I'll give it a listen to cheer myself up slightly

Not as gloomy a listen as you were foreshadowing!

Agree with all the points raised. I think it's difficult to put this game into any sort of context without knowing how the team will react against West Ham. Put in respectable performances against West Ham and Fulham and we can put it down to a spectacularly bad day at the office, but another heavy defeat and I fear for Hecky going into the international break.

Lovely tribute to Maddy Cusack at the start of pod as well.

Good listen as always. Sound points and a realistic assessment of where we're at.

On a long drive through Austria (humblebrag alert) Bladespod and Nessman930 and Chad's Red Half got me through a few Alpine passes. Chad's rant is recommended listening and hits all the relevant points in about 2 mins with his usual clarity

Lovely tribute to Maddy at the beginning. It can't have been an easy pod for either of you so thanks as always for doing it. I hope the Prince is as realistic in his expectations of Hecky. Boy do we need to avoid a hammering tomorrow (no pun intended).

Cheers Beans & Roygbiv. It was a good listen. Hopefully we never have to talk about any of these again. Ever.

You (and Four Blades) really let the players off.
