Makes no difference in reality. Club to club clauses mean you win some and lose some. Player to club will be tailored to ensure the player is still on a heck of a salary, and the bonus clauses only enhance that…or you go elsewhere to a club that doesn’t have them.Agree, creative contracts with loads of performance related add-ons really complicate the picture regards player wages.
It’s later transpired that some of the transfer fees we supposed to have paid are also massively variable dependent on performance.
Performance clauses seem to be the way forward regards salaries and transfer fees.
I worked in a bank, not necessarily the actual branch, but where the accounts of various footballers were held. It wasn't difficult to find these accounts and there in front of you was the information. Admittedly bonuses etc skewed the payments but it was pretty simple to get an average from previous payments. Technically this is confidential, but back then there was no trail as to who had accessed an individuals account
You’d need a fair few leakers at HMRC to cover every player at every club. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen as l have come across it personally but many players will be dealt with by a high net worth section where l’d expect security to be pretty tight on stuff like this. Not entirely true. Perhaps someone who works for HMRC leaked the info? Or from whoever administers their pensions, or one of the other benefit providers? Maybe the payroll is outsourced.
