two defenders sold themselves for the equalizer, made it easy for the cut back to the other foot and shot in too much space

..looked at it again, looks like he had too much space in the first place and the RB was out of position perhaps.

Brayford lacking in form it would seem.

Adkins pretty much admitted that he should have kept Coutts on and gone with an attacking player. Although I see why he took Basham off (injured) and he thought Hammond would get red a card eventually.

Based on those highlights it looked like a good game. Their goal was well taken although two of our defenders are mugs to get sold a feint like that.

Opportunity missed yet again.

Own goal, hit Collins and diverted into the corner of the net.

he should be at the peak of the diamond!! Surely you would have been better off with young Louis Reed as the DM/M holding and looking to pass on the counter?!

The defending for their goal is pathetic. Send Edgar back, and sell Brayford. Neither of them is worth what we are paying them. Laughable that these are Championship quality players.

What a golden opportunity when their keeper cocked up, pity Coutts didn't look up and see Billy instead of trying to score from such a difficult angle.

Agreed make the game 2-0 and I think we wouldn't have struggled so much even with subs Adkins ended up making.

We do need to learn to kill teams off when we have the chance.

Very heavy touch, and a player you wouldn't expect it from - and no left foot.

Wonder if he panics sometimes in the box which is why he's only got 6 goals in >200 games.

Tin hat on, and bearing in mind I'm generally relaxed on the fact we haven't yet secured the two signings we're after... but I can't help but be alarmed at the fact one of the people we've bid for is "now going to a Premier League club".

Adkins is quite rightly wanting to get people in that will go straight into strengthening the first XI. Why on earth then are we targeting people of a quality that is attracting anyone in the Premier League? We don't need that level of quality. Our star of the season thus far is probably Sharp, and I doubt he'd attract anything above mid Championship at the minute – certainly no Premier League team will buy him. Jagielka aside, we didn't have Premier League teams knocking on the door about any of our promotion winning Championship side.

I'm all for waiting for the right targets over signing anyone for the hell of it. But there must surely be players available that no Premier League scouts are even remotely interested in that would significantly improve us. Hopefully this is just a case of us working done a priority list, but I'm concerned from that comment that we're going after people we have a small chance of getting.

Don't buy this.

Didn't he say the player was not a first team regular but he'd made a couple of starts, appeared on the radar and got picked up from there.

This to me sounds like great talent identification, I'd imagine they'd put in a lot of work, found a gem, and it was snatched away - a lower League frustration.

Also, there will be others. Hopefully.

You miss my point. We don't need to find "a gem", much less any that when scouted by a Premier League team becomes an attractive option to sign by them. We need players that are better than our current XI – I refuse to believe that there are no centre-halves we could get available in the league above currently out of the picture, or players in this league in their first team, who aren't better than Collins for example. I'd say Edgar was an improvement for example – we weren't likely competing with any Premier League teams to get him, nor was that ever remotely likely. We could basically do with a Morgan type. I don't recall us fighting any Premier League teams for his signature when his contract at Barnsley was up.

Surely you don't miss the opportunity to sign a gem you aim as high as you can with the funds available.OK we need to strengthen our first eleven but if opportunity knocks (sometimes under the radar players can be signed,Turner had a reputation for finding strikers at Scunthorpe pigs latest signing is just one there are others) you don't throw it away.We obviously have other targets fingers crossed we can get a couple over the line.

I think I get the point, but I also think the point is not supported by the context provided by the full interview.

It wasn't a tug of war between us and a Division 1 monster.

We'd identified a talented player who wasn't playing first team football and was out of sight.

During the acquisition process he ended up in the first team, in the sunlight, and at that point, after we'd done the work, he was taken from us.

We had unearthed a gem and were sneaking off with it under the hairy warty noses of Division 1 scouts when it caught the light, twinkled, and we were beaten up and robbed.

It happens.

Rather than being a criticism or condemnation of our policy, or more particularly our ability to identify talent, it's a strong validation of it.

We go again.

Great if they work out. But if time and resources is spent to no avail on the slim hopes of getting them before anyone else nicks in, ultimately at the expense of getting in someone able to improve us but who is less good, this might be a problem. Again, I hope it's a case of us working through our priority list, and that we are rapidly able to divert attention elsewhere. But the chances a League 1 side wins out in the scenario you mention have got to be slim.

I think we have to leave that to Adkins in the hope he knows what he's doing

Agreed. But I'd be lying if I said this hasn't added an ounce of doubt as to whether the mistakes of the last window won't be repeated. An interesting week ahead...

Che Adams wasn't it?

That bit of play demonstrates his lack of mobility for me. He really seems to struggle to get out of first gear going forwards or when chasing back and it's a big problem. I think he's quite clever and decent on the ball but can't play in the centre any more due to that lack of movement. None of the midfield four we started are capable of breaking forward to support the attack, which is a shame when our only tactic seemed to be to launch it at the front two. On the rare occasion they retained it there was no one within fifty yards of them. Even more worryingly, we replaced three of the four and none of the replacements are capable of the movement that we lack either.
