The difference is that the impact of deciding that the ball did, in fact, cross the touchline has far less bearing on the outcome of the game than deciding that the ball did cross the goal line.

While we're on the subject - the whole of the ball has to cross the whole of the line. The number of throw ins/goal kicks/corners given when that criterion hasn't been satisfied winds me up.

I know that, but there is nothing in the laws to say that that means there is a higher standard of proof when deciding whether or not a goal has been scored.

The goal Lampard "scored" in Bloemfontain in the 2010 World Cup, which was not allowed

There is video of the linesman concerned mouthing to England Players "it did not cross the line"

Clearly this fucker should be sleeping with the fishes

I checked the rules. All it talks about is the referee's "opinion" and "opinion" is much less than certainty. The rules definitely do not say that a goal can only be awarded if its is beyond reasonable doubt.
Which rules?

But I've already stated the rules don't say that. As have you.
My point is that the referees are given guidance on how to interpret and apply the rules. And if they follow that guidance they can't give a goal.

Can you link the relevant guidance?

No, just heard it on the radio from a former ref. I don't even know if it's published and I don't care enough about it to search for it.

Only just seen the highlights - ok, the big "tackles" have been discussed, but what makes him an awful referee for me are the smaller incidents. These two "challenges", both penalised, and look how quickly he's got his whistle up. I wonder if this chap was invited to Shirecliffe as part of the "PGMOL".

Did we get a free kick for the second one?

Watched it again.

We were even jammier second time round:
  • Captain Jay's sending off
  • Collins's handball before...
  • ...the ball went over the line (90+% sure on this one)
  • Hammond sending off
  • Hammond giving away a penalty - fistfuls of shirt from a corner (didn't see this at all at the time)
  • Billy not even looking at the ball when it went in off his shoulder
So that's:
  • two pretty clear red cards
  • Two penalties
  • And very very probably a goal
But all credit to the Coventry fans they took it so well.

I think for the Hammond penalty he gave a free kick to United for a foul in goal area. I'm not convinced the ball was over the line. But the others.......

Actually, having looked at it again, I would be about 95% certain it was over the line. Look between Long's legs (oo erre missus), there is clear grass between the goal line and the ball.
Which one

In the Hammond pen incident Collins is also fouled. The ref had given a harsh decision against us for the corner just before so I reckon he spotted that one first (as he was looking for it) and blew straight away.

Collo only used one hand ;)

I actually think the yellow for McEvely was correct. You used to get those all the time - a roughing up of the winger I don't see him studs up - more shins and ensuring he takes the man with the ball (of course he got nowhere near the ball, which makes it look worse than it was)

There was one from Hammond later where the studs were up but it was very low to the ground.

Coventry can fuck right off anyway.
Fucking whinging, pompous, outraged, set of dodgy ill fitting granny knitwear donning cunts

I remember seeing some kids show in the 90s (possibly Blue Peter) and this lad was on as the youngest to pass all referee exams, or something. They showed him a few clips and asked him to adjudicate. One was an absolute shocker from Cantona (Similar to McEv's but with what looked to me like clear intent) and where I thought "straight red", this kid said yellow. Absolutely correct, apparently.
