I have been slaving away for the tax man today therefore have little to no knowledge of the days proceedings other than the odd bit of commentary here and there.

I would appreciate some in depth reports and ratings my blades brothers and sisters, if you don't mind.

UTB!

Brilliant again. Big shout out to basham for me, his energy was great.
Charlton have some good players and created some good chances. They came and gave us a game, fair play to them.
However, we were sublime again at times. We have real quality coming off the bench and it's been a joy to watch once again. Overall we were good for a win.
Great backing at the end and the whole team came to collect their praise from the kop at the end and it was a really nice moment to witness the reception that they got.
Grit, determination, skill, desire, all there in abundance today.

Bad start by the Blades and got punished, but scoring twice didn't seem like that big a task for this lot.

Very open game, so with United having a narrow lead Wilder puts three attacking players on and gets at them. Charlton looked like a very good side who just came across someone that bit better.

Karl Robinson addressed the press after their 2-1 defeat.

Charlton passed us off the park for the first 10 minutes, TGM. We gave away an early goal when Kieron Freeman played a bad pass followed, after we won it back, by Mark Duffy playing silly buggers and Charlton getting a free kick right on the edge of the box. We struggled for a bit and Charlton won some corners and hit the top of the bar. After that it was business as usual. Jack O'Connell headed the equaliser and when the Blades began the second half the same way that Charlton had started the first, Freeman's cross was perfect for Lafferty. The goalie made a great save from his header but he popped the rebound into the net. After that we had more chances than Charlton and played some great stuff.

I agree with everyone who says Bash had a great game. Other stars were O'Connell, EEB, Coutts and Carruthers after he replaced Duffy in the second half. And Simon Moore, so shaky on Tuesday, was as solid as a rock this afternoon.

Cheers TBW and all who have contributed so far. Sounds like we are still very much on target then!

Coutts played Freeman under pressure (granted it was a woeful attempted pass from Freeman after that) then it was Coutts who conspired to give them a free kick in a very dangerous area.

No idea how they are 30 odd points behind us, they should have been 2-0 before we finally woke up.

Very bad start by us and great start by them.

Was disappointed in Moore's positioning for the free kick, the ball seemed to be pretty central when it went in.

End of first half we woke up and piled the pressure on, should have gone in winning at half time, could possibly have had a penalty too.

Second half was much better, came out quickly and got our goal but could never really kill them off.

Ricky Holmes did his level best to hit the Charlton fans in the top row with every shot and the last ten minutes were pretty hairy.

Blades fans turned the noise up and we saw the game out. They had a fair amount of possession in dangerous positions but remember many actual chances.

Oh and thanks to Gary Sinclair for announcing that Bolton had conceded a 95th minute equaliser when they hadn't.

In conclusion, we're only going to win the pissing league aren't we?

Potted report for our Green Man.

Charlton are an underperforming side with some talented players. Give them a big stage and they decide to play. And sure enough, in midfield they were initially quicker, bigger, stronger and had a couple of real footballers.

After their good start, aided by some dozy United defending, we switched from 3-5-2 and put Basham in front of the back four. It was an unfamiliar formation and we were slow to find attacking rhythm. Our goal was from our first spell of quality football, though we did finish the half a lot better.

Second half we played pretty well and our strong bench told as Carruthers' silky touches opened them up. The winning goal was a good move and great cross from Freeman to his opposite fullback (that's how positive this team is). We could have had a couple more, but Charlton were always capable of asking questions and they had a few chances to equalise, but lacked composure in front of goal. By the end we were utterly knackered and getting men behind the ball to hold onto the win.

To those who fault Basham - how many other players can step out of the back four into midfield and shore up the game, enabling us a turn the game around? Those who fault Hanson - whoever starts out of Hanson and Lavery will always make way for the other to finish the game. Note how exhausted our XI was at the end of the game. I doubt either can do 90 minutes just now.

Scores on the doors:

Moore - 7 - Good solid game - made a couple of saves and handled flawlessly in the wet.
Freeman - 7 - Started poorly and perhaps was overly adventurous when we went to back four. But he set up the winner and you have to love his bombing forward.
EEL - 7.5 - Made some tremendous challenges and positionally was much improved.
JOC - 7.5 - Really solid and had plenty to do. One great burst forward second half.
Basham - 8 - MOTM. Put a lid on Charlton's dominance, quietened their hugely impressive no.11 and was surprisingly classy in possession.
Lafferty - 7 - Scored the winner, ran a marathon. Good lad.
Fleck - 6 - Quiet game as the midfield battle was tight, but still a few classy touches.
Coutts - 6 - As above.
Duffy - 6 - As above. Our midfield is much better in possession than they are at protecting the defence.
Hanson - 6 - Worked hard, won a few headers, and nearly slid home a Sharp cross in the first half. Not the greatest game but he needs our midfield to dominate in order to threaten.
Sharp - 7 - Could barely move at the end. Huge shift for no reward.

Carruthers 8 - Silky little bugger isn't he?
O'Shea - 7 - Didn't have too long but gave us much needed legs and was handy on the ball.
Lavery - 7 - Not what the Charlton defence wanted to see, but ended up defending with the rest.

Wilder - Early tactical change to turn the game in our favour. Can't fault that.

Ref - Really unwilling to book anyone, and gave Charlton a lot of 50/50s early on which helped them get a grip of the game.
Linos - Made a few poor calls, and as a result got stick from the crowd even when they made fair ones.....

Very entertaining and credit to Charlton for giving it a go making it an open game.

We started sluggish as though we just had to turn up to win.
Charlton were focussed, came out all guns blazing and blew us away the first 10 minutes.
They played a hign pressing game as we struggled to get any good possession.

As the 1st half wore on we got better and better.
We finished strongly as we were the team pushing for the 2nd goal.

Half-time: 1-1 draw, probably a fair scoreline although we did finish strongly.

2nd half: We started in a similar fashion to what Charlton did in the 1st half.
Scored a deserved early goal with Charlton struggling to keep up their pressing game.
Our midfield now had more space and at times we played some beautiful passing in that 2nd half.

We deserved the 2-1 win, played some really beautiful football
but it's rare to see a team give us a real game at Bramall Lane. It was a really entertaining match
On that showing I expect CA to be pushing for promotion next season.

Carruthers 2 points more than the rest of the midfield ? Hes good on the eye but doesn't want to do the work that the other 3 do. Impact sub for me at the moment.

Points are awarded within the context of their role. :) As an impact sub he really did make an impact.

Agree I'd not start him just yet - has learning to do.

Terrible positioning from Moore, he was nowhere near it and it wasn't anywhere near the corner.

Quite an even and entertaining game with a lot of good players on display playing well.

Charlton had their strongest team out. They have some good players and they all had a big say in the first 15 minutes or so, in which they were unlucky not to be 2-0 up.

We got a grip after about 25 minutes and got on top. 1-1 was fair at half time, it would've been very harsh on Charlton if we went in ahead.

We started the second half well (for once) and went ahead with a very pleasing wing back to wing back goal.

We could have made it 3-1 but Charlton continued to threaten, they were finding plenty of space to get at our defence. We changed the system to cope easier, and they stopped finding gaps down the sides. We were quite compact for the rest of the game, spending quite long spells absorbing what they threw at us and defending the box well, although it remained quite end to end.

Then the Kop woke up with 2 minutes to go and remembered that this was actually a really big game and a massive win.

Individually, pretty much everybody played quite well. It was a good team performance, only made to look average by what today was a good Charlton team.

Well, he'd have to have an arm span of 8 yards to covert the entire goal! The free kick was right on the edge of the box and in the middle. If he had stood more to his right then I expect Ricky Holmes would have kicked it to his left, so he had no choice but to stand right in the centre of the goal. As it was, he did his best and got his hand to it but it was a very well-taken kick.

The fault for the goal, I'd say, lay with the dozy bugger who gave the free kick away in the first place.

I was worried for about ten minutes then the quality was evident to see. We gifted them the free kick which they scored from, without that they would still have nil even playing till now. We always looked like winning, never got out of third gear. A very comfortable 2-1.

I don't think anyone has mentioned they had a big penalty shout turned down at 1-0 while they still had us on the ropes early on. The referee started the game well so I was surprised he didn't give it as it looked pretty clear to me.

I have to agree with that. Not seen it on video but from where I was sat that's how it appeared. Thought similar last week as well. Should have got something on Swindons second.

However - still a big improvement on our number 2 goalie who will surely be allowed to leave in the summer.

Hanson headed back across the goal in the first half and Fleck was just taken out as he was about to head it goal ward, blatant penalty and right under the refs nose?

I also thought that O'Connell didn't touch Duffys cross, I was sat in the Bramall Lane Lower and it looked to me like OConnells attempt to head it distracted the keeper and the ball just continued past them both into the corner of the net :)

I hope your not expecting Deadbat standard GM.

Charlton started brightly on the front foot,United couldn't get out...I feared the worst as soon as we gave a Free Kick away just left of centre...My fears were justified when Ricky Holmes stepped up and curled it in to Moore's right..1-0 Charlton.
The Blades started to settle and Coutts,Fleck and Duffy pulling the strings..Lafferty was wasteful on a few different occasions with his crossing, but it was O'Connell heading in at the Lane End from a Duffy cross angled in from the right...United had better of things for the remainder of the first half but couldn't capitalise.
H/T Blades 1 Charlton 1
Second Half United came out unchanged but with a change of shape, and a 4-4-2 formation Bash at the base Duffy at the top,Fleck and Coutts left and right.
Early in the half it was United on the front foot, and great work by Coutts to put Freeman in behind right hand channel..Freeman put in a great cross which was met by a Lafferty header...Rudd saved but Lafferty put in the rebound....2-1 Blades.
Carruthers came on for the impressive Duffy, and then Hanson made way for Lavery with about 20 mi mutes to go.
Charlton gave it a go and United were under the cosh for the last 10/15 minutes, but hung on for a well earned 3 points.
Great to see fans staying behind to applaud off the Wizards again.

Moore 6.5
Freeman 7
Bash 8.5 MoM

Completely agree with that. Needs to do the mucky stuff.

Charlton man marked our midfield three when our GK and defence had possession and forced the long ball.

Cheers for taking the time JD, appreciated mate. Good read.

Well I thought it was a tense and nervy affair today and to be fair Charlton deserved a point. We started terrible pissing about at the back in the first minute (just put your foot through it until the game settles down) and sure enough we gave away a free kick on the edge of the box. The wall didn't do it's job 0 - 1 and the visitors were all over us for a while, we could have been two or three down before we got an equaliser with our first bit of decent play and effort on goal. We did have a decent shout for a penalty but never got to grips with Charlton until close to HT our best was a few crosses that zipped across the six yard line.
We started much better in the second half and started passing and playing like we know we can and soon had a second goal their keeper did well to keep the header out but could do nothing to stop Lafferty putting the rebound away. After that the game was end to end but on the whole Chartlon made the better chances all game but their finishing was woeful, we had some good periods of lovely football but the final ball was poor and we failed to make the Charlton keeper work for his pay.
