The Premiership began in 1992, now called the Premier League (unless you're Roygbiv on BladesPod), who makes the Blades all time Premier League XI?

There's plenty of contenders but the only rules are, they must have played for Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Good question (although being pedantic, it started as the premier league, changed to the premiership and then changed back again!).

Here goes:

GK: Kelly
RB: Jagielka
CB: O’Connell
CB: Egan
CB: Basham
LB: Stevens
CM: Fleck
CM: Hodges
CM: Whitehouse
ST: Deane
ST: Hulse

Kelly
Geary, Jags, Egan, JOC, Stevens
Norwood, Fleck
Hodges
Deane, Hulse

Lefties need love too.

It's interesting to see Hulse make the strikers position, I suppose it shows how few quality strikers we have had in the top flight. I'd personally say Sharp could play up there with Deane, not for what he's done in the Prem but he qualifies as he has played in the top flight for us. Otherwise Lys or Blake...but I'm tempted to play one upfront!

I based mine on performance in the Prem which is why I left Billy out.

I've been watching since 02/03 so based on that:

Henderson

Baldock
Jagielka
Egan
Stevens

Fleck
Norwood
Lundstrum
Tonge

Mousset
Hulse

Vague memories of the early days but important to say that we’d play the current system so players would need to fit into it:

Kelly

Enda
Baldock (I loved Tommy Cowan as a kid though so it’s hard to choose)
Egan (Morgan wasn’t a good enough footballer for the current system)
JOC
Basham

Whitehouse (in the Fleck role and not because he’s better but because it’s Whitehouse)
Norwood
Jags (could have done the box to box if he didn’t have a stiff neck from watching it get launched from back to front)

Deane
Mousset (for his style, Hulse if we played hoofball)

That was bloody difficult to pick a team without just copying and pasting our current XI. I quite liked Colin Kazim-Richards and feel he should of had a better career. Also fond memories of Nade. I remember being at the Bolton game and we were just getting absolutely shafted until he came on and gave us some much needed physical presence. I have a vivid memory of 2 Bolton players being in front of him, thus blocking my view of Nade who was running goalwards with the ball. I was thinking to myself fucking hell he's lost the ball, only for the Bolton players to get flung aside as Nade stampeded through. Great stuff, he single handedly earned us that point IMO.

Isn’t it just the best player in each position though? Not actually a team to go out and win games? That’s my definition of all time premier 11. Isn’t ‘what’s the best team we could put out?’ a different question? For the purpose of this exercise, if Hulse and Deano are the best two strikers, they’re the best two strikers, does it matter whether they could theoretically play together?

THREAD CLOSED (although Nathan Blake would run Hulse close)

I did come close to including Blake instead of Hulse, but he did actually only play for us in the Prem for about three months (although was bloody good in that three months).

No it doesn't matter whether they could theoretically play together and I never thought of that as a caveat. It's simply any formation, any players, as long as they played for us in the Premier League and you thought they were good.

What a player Robbie Hulse was. West Ham cheating and the result at Wigan aside, had he not broken his leg his outstanding performances would have kept us up. Apparently he was on the verge of an England call up as well. Him and Stead could have been a lethal partnership up top for years

In that case i’ll go for a 1950’s style 2-3-5 formation:-

———————--Kelly—————————
————-Morgan———Egan——————
—Jagielka———Norwood——Stevens—-
Mousset Stead Deane McGoldrick Hodges

Subs:- Henderson, Basham, O’Connell, Whitehouse, Fleck, Bryson, Hulse
