Take from the Star
SHEFFIELD United, who will today attempt to complete their first signing of the loan transfer window, are bracing themselves for a flurry of hostile inquiries about players on the fringes of Kevin Blackwell's squad.
The United manager revealed last month that he has received numerous approaches from other clubs interested in luring the likes of Derek Geary, Nick Montgomery and Danny Webber away from South Yorkshire.
Blackwell was unwilling to do business before the deadline for permanent signings, arguing that it could leave his team exposed in the event of an injury crisis.
But, with United understood to be confident of recruiting a midfielder before Saturday's visit to Derby County, sources close to the promotion hopefuls predict several of their Championship rivals will press ahead with their efforts to plunder Bramall Lane.
Blackwell, who has spent the past fortnight in talks with Wigan aimed at securing the services of Michael Brown, has stressed repeatedly that United will do business only "on our own terms".
The Brown negotiations are now at an advanced stage although, wary of a last minute hitch, Blackwell has complied a list of possible alternatives which reportedly includes ex-Owl Glenn Whelan of Stoke.
Having lost out on Lee Martin and Peter Halmosi, United are also keen to add a left-winger to Blackwell's options, with Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson among those being touted.
But it seems certain that United will also be forced to contemplate the short-term future of several of their own players.
United play six matches in 20 days following their outing at Pride Park.
Montgomeyr is now fully recovered from the fitness problems which have plagued him over the last 12 months.
One of United's most loyal servants, the 26-year-old's main priority is forcing his way back into Blackwell's starting 11 but he could be tempted to sharpen his fitness elsewhere.
