In my 70 years of watching United, I can only think of 2 players whose careers with United are defined by their scoring match-winning goals against Wednesday. No other memory of them comes to mind, but I regard them as legends.
Bill Punton, signed from Norwich in 1966, scored 1 goal for United in 1967, a winning goal in a 1-0 defeat of Wednesday, scored in front of the Kop. Absolute legend, had a bald head, and nothing else comes to mind about his brief time at the Lane.
Bobby Davison, made his debut at Hillsborough in 1992, scored 2 goals in a 3-1 triumph. Absolute legend, I don’t remember any of his other 3 league goals for us.
And now, Tyrese Campbell, excellent winning goal on Sunday, in front of the Kop, absolute legend already. But I suspect in 2 years time I won’t remember his other 2 goals for us. Will he join this select group? I hope not, I would love him to go on and have a great career for us. Football is a funny old game.

Just like his goal on Sunday was the winning goal, both of Campbell's other two goals have been match winning goals.
  • scored to make it 2-0 against Stoke
  • same against Blackburn

His only league goal for us but did score 2 in the FA Cup replay against Fulham a month later. Celebrated his 90th birthday early this year at Carrow Road.

Arturo lupoli scored in a Derby. Defeat unfortunately. It was his only blades goal. I think.

Sorry to be Mr nit pick, but the first goal in each of those other two games was the winner, not Campbell's. UTB

To be a legend, it has to be a winning goal. I seem to remember thinking it was an own goal anyway, but if it had been a match-winner, I wouldn’t have cared.

Alan Quinn, a moment in history and Steel City derby folklore. That pretty much was the most memorable and defining moment of his Blades career.
A good shout, but didn’t meet my strict criteria because he played plenty of games for us, and was a player I enjoyed watching playing for us. If it hadn’t been for their Derby-match goals, the only thing I would have remembered directly about Punton and Davison was Punton’s bald head.

I liked Alan Quinn too but I can't think of anything else memorable that he did for us except for score against the Pigs. Stephen Quinn had far more memorable in a Blades shirt than Alan did.

My strict criteria are very subjective, and basically just a way of carrying on enjoying Sunday’s victory! I am with you that I don’t remember any other specific moment from Alan Quinn, but I remember that I rated him at first, liked him running with the ball carrying it from defence into attack, and I think he took a few decent free-kicks. But his winning goal v Wednesday was at the Bramall Lane end, which for me (behind the goal on the Kop) is never quite the same. And presumably he remains a one-off for years to come, by having scored for both Sheffield clubs in the Derby games.

I suspect there'll be a few different interpretations of this but for me a 2-0 win doesn't contain a winning goal.

A winning goal has to be a) the last goal of a match, that b) would've otherwise been a draw. I know other sports have different takes, too.

In some ways my abiding memory of Dane Whitehouse are his goals against Wednesday. A little harsh I must admit because he was a great player but I suspect he’d be alright with being remembered for them.
Not harsh because he scored in both games in the first top flight derbies since god was a lad, we won them both, did a memorable double that hasn’t been repeated since by either side (I don’t think - certainly not top flight) so in a way it absolutely should be what young Dane Whitehouse should be remembered for.

Does he have the unique honour of having played for and scored for both Sheffield teams in the derby?

He was an unusual player. Not outrageously gifted but always positive in what he did. When things didn’t come off for him he looked truly dreadful, but when they did he could look dynamite for short spells.

Guess he was a good fit for Warnock. Doubt Wilder would tolerate his randomness.

Laurent D’Jaffo. Meh but he scored against them. Can’t remember another game where he scored for us off the top of my head. Remember him hitting the bar at home to Walsall.
