Anyone seen a coupon this month with the handicap betting to win the league?

Love to know what points advantage they give us.

Guys some of you clearly don't get how this handicap betting works. We are 18/1 with +20 points but all the other sides except
the favourites have 'x' points start too. So there will be teams with 10 point starts and others with 30 point starts. It's who is top when the full handicap is accounted for.

Makes a lot of sense but I had not considered it like that

Didn't like the tone of it
Blade why don't you like the tone of it ? It's bang on in my opinion. Any success Wilder achieves is in spite of the board not because of them. We were promised championship investment and instead we have received 6m in extra income and spent sod all in championship terms. There's sides like Bristol City and Reading spending millions on players and we are shopping in the bargain basement as usual.

Did you feel it was unfairly critical?
Yes, here's a couple of reasons why:
They are suggesting United are looking for a season of consolidation, which is utter rubbish. Wilder is going out to win the title he is not a man who accepts second best, he's not a braggart so allows the team to do the talking.
They are once again blaming the owners for not putting up money but:
1. Putting up cash is no guarantee of success
2. Since the money would have to come from the personal wealth of the owners the author let them spend it how they see fit. If it was money from United's bank account great, we can call for it to be spent but it is not.
3. The season has not started yet we do not know the full level of investment.

Like much of comment on football from supporters, it's starts with 'what do I want to happen?' and then one constructs an argument to support why it should happen. The main thrust of the article is 'I want us to invest loads of money so that we're immediately challenging for promotion'. Yes, that would be nice but it's not very likely.

There was a lot about what we should do - spend loads of money, and a rough financial argument as to why - if we go up we'll be rich but very little consideration of how much we'd need to invest and what would happen if we don't go up. Talk of new investors or owners without considering that some owners are good and some are a fucking catastrophe.

This particularly annoyed me 'This isn’t the moment for faint hearts or eternal optimisim.' again, just completely failing to understand where we are right now, just a meaningless slogan. Almost as the comment about JOC, Coutts etc signing new contracts and saying 'but where would we be without them'. True, if half our first team get injured we might be in a bit of bother, like most clubs.

There's some good points in there but it's quite agenda-driven and just what I expected when I was reading the comments at the end of last season about back to back promotions coz Bassett did it. And again, another one saying the extent of Brentford's ambition is to stay in the championship. No it fucking isn't.

Pretty much sums up my view!

It's as if some would be happier seeing us 'spunk' £millions as if that guarantees anything.

In Wilder I 100% trust.

Bear in mind though that this is a bet for ALL the division, it's not just a straight 50/50 bet against the league winners. In other words, say, Preston who are currently +23 finish above us, you'd lose.

With Wilder it should mean that we were challenging for top six but even to guarantee that we'd have to spend stupid money and risk destroying our fantastic team spirit. We have to give the majority of the existing players the chance to prove themselves and you don't do that by filling the squad with players costing £5m each.
If we signed a CM for £5m, we'd have to play him ahead of Coutts or Fleck, that's just how it works.

I'm starting to agree we need something else up front but we'll struggle to attract or afford a top signing in that position. A loan is more likely.
We obviously need another keeper but we knew that. And we need another CH, as cover at least. But I think CW may be waiting to give Bash and JOC a couple of games before deciding whether to go for cover or upgrade.
Assuming Lundstram and Leonard come in, that's pretty much all we need, unless we have another dramatic change in formation like we did last season.

So really, we've got a fortnight to get L&L over the line and bring a keeper in, then a couple of weeks of games to assess what else we need and get the deals done.

If we do all that, IMO, we've done sensible and sustainable building.

I'd love it if the Prince and KM decided to commit £150m over three years to get us up but I genuinely don't believe they have it. I'd love it if a new owner came in, put money in to get us up and redeveloped the Lane. But there have been far more bad owners than good, far more Venkys than there have been Sheik Mansours. No one wants to see us playing in a bowl stadium east of Attercliffe and being called Sheffield Lucky Blades.

So, we have to build slowly. And it looks like we've got a manager who can do that and is prepared to do so.

All good and sound points BB,

Wilder has already said what positions he's looking to strengthen, so why some posters appear vexed by their perception of his inactivity is puzzling. The fact that he hasn't found the players he considers right for this club should be evidence enough that so far Wilder is still unable to fill certain positions. Allowing panic or desperation to get a grip is hardly the best way to strengthen our squad, so have a little patience, even if it is difficult not to jump on the "Do it now!" bandwagon!

There's only one criteria that matters where selecting a player is concerned - are they good enough? Does anyone consider it to be a good move to buy for the sake of buying? Once the season begins a poor player will get found out, and Wilder will find the hysterical elements within our crowd will get on his back for buying such a poor player.....so let Wilder do his job. He got us promoted, we're in far better shape now than this time last year, so it reflects poorly on those amongst us who think they have the answers to all the ills that a manager has to find solutions to.

Totally. I worry about our lack of speed and athleticism at both ends of the pitch but based on what I saw last season we have the technical ability to survive in the Championship.

I'd love us to go out and spend, but it based on what I've seen it'd be easy to go through £20m and still be no better off than we are now. Yes we do have intangibles as to whether players like JOC, Fleck, Coutts will be able to step up to Championship level, but I credit Wilder with knowing whether that is possible. His transfer activity so far would indicate he was more worried about our full backs being able to make the step up and he's addressed that. It also appears young Chedwym may not be the player we thought he was so no doubt Wilder is trying to scramble to find either a strike partnership that works, or a new striker.

However, with all of this Wilder is keeping to his ethos of hungry players with something to prove, and if possible with a potential resale value.
I'd rather see us give this policy a good go before we start spunking £10m on reserve strikers who wont take penalties!! Plus, if Wilder did spend £20m+ the pressure on him to succeed would be immense. At least with the current set up he can build and make the right decisions rather than panicking.

You're right about the owners too. Its my fear that someone realises that we are the atypical sleeping giant and makes McCabe an offer he can't refuse and takes us in the same direction as Birmingham, Leeds, Forest - the list goes on.
