Blades luckiest moment

Not sacking Dave Bassett when he got us relegated. I know he was only here a short time, but i expect many would have wanted him out at the time. I'm pretty sure if McCabe was around, he would have been replaced by some utter dufus and we would never have got promoted ever again.

How about when we would have played the pigs in the cup a couple of years ago, except that they lost (a replay?). We know what would have happened.

The 2 offside goals we scored vs Sunderland (or was it Palace?) in our cup run in the triple assault season.

That's the difference between our lucky moments and our unlucky moments. Our lucky moments might decide the outcome of a match.

Our unlucky moments have affected the club in a negative way for several years, if not decades after.

Also genuinely struggle to think of any meaningful 'luck' we've ever had. It really says something when I've been following this club for about 5 decades.

I was going to mention the Hull v Burnley game myself. I remember listening to the game on Radio Sheffield and it sounded like Hull were all over Burnley in the Second Half.

Mine was Trevor Hockey's goal against Millwall on Easter Tuesday 1971. Before the match Cardiff City were a point ahead of us with 6 games left and we had 5 games left. Our previous three games had ended in a 0-0 draw. Against Millwall we attacked and attacked without breaking through the tough Millwall defence. With about 5 minutes left, Millwall's keeper, Bryan King, got hold of the ball after a corner by us. All our players ran upfield anticipating's King's drop kick but Hockey decided to dived straight to King, knocked the ball off King's grasp and slid the loose ball into the net. The crowd knew it was a bit of a horseplay but to our surprise the ref awarded a goal to us! I wasnt aware at first that the ref had indicated a goal to us and I was puzzled at the half hearted cheering by some of the fans near me. My dad pulled my arm to make me cheer the goal, I was still puzzled and saw the furious Millwall players surrounding the ref who was pointing his finger towards the centre spot. It was a surreal moment! A few minutes later an owl goal made it 2-0 to us. We got 9 points from our last 5 games and Cardiff only got 5 points from their last 6 games

Exactly, we have had lucky moments but as you say they usually just decide a match.

We have not blagged our way to signing world class ineligible players, fucked off our debtors to allow new ownership or got the tax payer to pay for a new ground.

Some that stand out for me together with those mentioned:

Deano scoring against Watford with a grass cutter that hit a bobble over Tony Coton's head.

We have scored many a deflected goal but two of the biggest for me were Brownie's against Forest in the play offs to get us straight back in it and Brayford's clincher against Charlton in the cup.

Don't know why I remember this but Wayne Quinn scored an incredibly lucky free kick against Barnsley. He hit a powder puff chip over the wall which the Barnsley keeper (think it was Leese) could have walked to and caught but he slipped on his arse in the mud and the ball sailed in.

We won't get many luckier games than Cov at home this season. They should have had a pen, a goal we should have been down to 9 men. We then scored off Sharp's shoulder.

This is going to be a really short thread...

Going up when hull couldn't beat burnley by 3 clear goals?

Can't be many other 'lucky' moments.

In someways the promotion that season was unlucky.
It didn't happen in front of the fans, so we have no memories of a fantastic day celebrating with the fans in front of the players.

In our promotion season in 1990 I remember two awful home performances against Oxford and Port Vale where we somehow managed to scrape a fortunate win.

If Jags was in the car park celebrating promotion in 1984 he must have been the youngest person there!

Clearly misread the post whilst doing 3 things at once... Whoops :D

Our players celebrating Hockey's goal. Millwall players are not in the photo as they were surrounding the ref and protesting!

That was the only home game Bert missed that season, due to a family commitment.

Bert is still fuming about having to miss the game.

Bit more recent but the Shaun miller goal against Fulham turning Maguires header into the net in the last minute to send us through to the 5th round or porter scoring 2 goals in about a minute against Forrest in the fifth round to win us the match 3-1 unluckiest could be Coady scoring 2 offside goals against Charlton in same season

Out luckiest moment in my opinion was when wilf rostron smashed a ball point blank into Martin hodges face from about five yards....

He should have gone off with concussion, however, we all know how that day ended...

It was Agana that smashed the ball against Hodge's face in the build up to our second goal scored by Deane. Hodge was too groggy to stop Agana's and Rostron's goals

Anyone remember the Huddersfield home game in 1989? Let's see if I have this right:

first 5 minutes: penalty to Huddersfield - Craig Maskell puts it wide
late in first half - United take the lead in an even contest when Huddersfield handle in the box. 1-0 thanks to Duffield
just after half time - Duffield scores wonder strike from 25 yards after breaking from our half - 2-0
48-75 minutes - Huddersfield lay siege to United's goal and manage to pull one back - 2-1
about 75 minutes - in a rare foray upfield for United, Andy May scores a daft own goal - 3-1
80-90 minutes - Huddersfield run out of steam, and Bryson (I think) and Deano add late goals - 5-1

We won 5-1, and there's a good argument that Huddersfield were the better team on the day...

Whoever said we only have lucky games is spot on. We never seem to have things break for us. We haven't had help from anyone else to send us up or keep us up since Burnley-Hull.

The Pigs let 5 in at Liverpool on the same day as well :-)
