Apparently the firecracker was the signal for the ultras to charge through the stewards so not only are the searches shit ,the intelligence is crap too. The French security forces are coming out of this very badly to be honest.

I agree that French security and policing leaves a lot to be desired, trust me I know. That said, the French naively think that people coming to a sporting tournament aren't doing so looking to get pissed out of their minds looking for a fight.

Funny that because I've spent my whole life in England and have never been involved in any violence whatsoever yet have been "indiscriminately whacked" on 2 occasions at football matches in this country.
Let's get some things straight. There is good and bad on ALL sides and that includes the locals and the police. The police have to show there authority and, just like here will occasionally go over the top in doing so. Just like the idiotic neanderthal few that claim to follow England/ Russia/Marseille.
Our biggest downfall is the reputation we have created in the past makes it easier to tarnish us than anyone else.

He also says that the senior UK copper in charge of monitoring the English fans [named him so R5 can check it out] agrees with what he is stating as truth.

England football fans are a lot "softer" today. After Hillsborough, Bradford , Heysel and the Taylor report, a lot of new fans have come into the game from the moneyed classes. They still like going for a drink, getting pissed, singing and maybe getting up to a bit of mischief. But, while they may look similar, they aren't anything like the hardcore hoolies of the 80's and 90's.

Problem is, they still have that reputation, and are liable to be chased around the city and clobbered by police and rival fans.

England could conceivably play Russia again in the semis (I think). They could certainly be back in Marseille, which hosts a quarter final and a semi final.

Seems like you are. Rather than condemning the minority who constantly ruin things for the rest of us. "Ruin", this time, meaning the chance of England possibly being kicked out of the competition.

As for "my stance": no need to misinterpret it. I'm clearly on about the violence of the last few days, rather than just what happened last night inside the stadium. And it's a pretty conventional stance - I happen to agree with this eye-witness, who talks about the compexity of the situation but isn't averse to saying things like "there are elements of the English support who behaved appallingly over the weekend" - "elements", that is: not "all", far from it.

The lad that got bottled is actually a Chesterdield fan (you can just about make out a tiny town sticker on the blades flag). He had 25-odd stitches but still made the game. Unfortunately he got booted all over at the game too!
Can only confirm what others have said. Very little has been instigated by England fans. First couple of nights was mostly local lad storming bars and cafes and then running off behind police. The Russians are a different breed. Organised. Some wearing England shirts. We've banned 100's of hooligans from travelling to France, Russia probably recruited theirs and paid for their travel. Did you see the reaction of the Russian sports minister in the ground? Worth looking up.

Also know these lads, been to many an away day together, known them a long time and certainly know they wouldn't be looking for trouble. If I was in Marseille I'm sure I wouldve been having a drink with them, which is bloody scary actually. Mockney Blade (probably know you too ), are they all ok? I know "Dave" said they'd been tear gassed and it was like a war zone. In Bordeaux at the moment, totally peaceful and a great atmosphere, not relishing moving onto Marseille at all!

I'm still travelling back as I write this , from Marseille . Went in 98 to England Tunisa too.
Horrible place when last time it felt whole of North Africa was gunning for us. This time the police were hostile. The Russians were evil and the English were mainly well behaved. Those with pre conceived ideas will not be convinced but I don't care. We were at the port with loads of fellow blades drinking and singing and suddenly were tear gassed. This was about 5pm ! Made our way to the ground and met by a load of aggressive Russians. Wasn't far from the flare and loud bang second half.
After game police dogs penned us in the outer cordon for no reason . We were staying 10 miles from the ground and walked around for two hours trying for a taxi. Very intimidating with groups all over in the darkness, unable initially to tell who was who. Eventually got back to the hotel relieved.
Made Millwall, Portsmouth et al very very tame!!

Total sympathy for any innocent fan caught up in this. Not so much for any ing-er-land fan singing 'where's your ISIS gone', in country badly affected by terrorism where hundreds have been murdered, including police, in a port city known for its immigrant Muslim population with a rough reputation and a city affected by English hooligans in 1998, whilst playing a team known for hardcore hooligans.

It might have seemed like a bit of a laugh at the time, but probably didn't help.

The scenes inside the ground and of the groups of Russians in black shirts roaming around outside were totally scary. FIFA need to seriously look again at 2018. That could be a bloodbath.
