2 ex Blades hit the news yesterday, poor old Gary Cahill, who along with Jags, before his knee injury, had a good chance of making the world cup and sealing himself a move to a top club now might possible never play again. Also highlights the risk of not selling your players when there are good offers on the table. Cahill has gone from a £10m asset to a possible value of £0 and a drain on the salary expenses.

The other one was Stuart McCall, who resigned from Bradford. A name that was numerously touted as a Blades manager but doesn't seem to cut it. He puts it down to bad luck and maybe it is but I think that in the lower leagues good managers have a chance to shine, unlike the top leagues where money has such big influence.

I know what you are getting at, but i hardly feel that a player subsequently getting a career threatening injury justifies their sale in the first place.

The obvious argument is that if Jagielka has stayed with us he may never have picked up the injury.

I send out my best wishes to both players, two of the best i have seen at the lane.

I am not saying that it is an acceptable excuse I am just pointing out the options that clubs have to weigh up when they get offered a good price for a player. keeping Cahill has probably earnt Bolton more if they stay in the Premiership.
Would keeping 2xKyle have got us back in the Premiership this year and given us a better return than the money we received from Spurs? Who knows. My guess is that we certainly wouldn't be worse off on the playing side with those 2, Morgs and Killa in defence but would it have been enough? We needed money these 2 were our best assets they got sold. Sad but true

The other angle to look at from this is the £4m player turned £1m player in one season.... Wayne Quinn and Curtis Woodhouse were both touted at £4m when they burst into the team, we ended up with £1.5m as Quinn went backwards under subsequent managers who thought the number 3 on his back made him a left-back, Woodhouse we got Nuddy for so, that turned out to be a better deal but the sale of those two couldve raked in £8m ten years ago if we'd taken it.

Any players career could be over in the blink of an eye - maybe another thing people should remember when theyre slating players who've been great servants to the club, for seeking better money deals as their contract comes to a close and we plead poverty.

You definately have a point; i can think of very few examples of players that have increased in value after we have sold them in my time supporting the blades.

I suppose Jagielka is the obvious exception but, as you have rightly pointed out, there is no gaurentee he will be the same player if he returns to the game at all.

I suppose the problem from my perspective is that i constantly feel the money that we have received recently for players (surely in excess of £15 million?) is never used to bring in the kind of replacement who i am excited to see.

I'm in Copenhagen right now!
On my way to the airport for a flight to Oslo in the next hour.

Alright Copenhagen, Did I read that right that Jags' might never play again or was it only Cahill? Where did you read that?

I read a few days back that Jags was back in training this week and was expected to be match fit within 4 weeks.

I agree both players were among the best.

I also don't agree its something that should be considered a "risk". You can't plan for career threatening injuries, what you can plan for is not to buy/ keep players that you can't afford to replace.

This is an interesting point; to which player are you alluding?

I immidiately thought of Beattie when i read your post and i can't help but wonder if the cost of keeping James at the club for the duration of his original contract would have been more or less then the potetnial cost of signing Ched Evans (that is his fee and his wages over the course of his contract).

It first came to mind when we lost Hulse to injury we didn't have a player to replace him and it cost us.

I'm just thinking generally, but Beattie would fit into that category.

It could apply to any number of players that we also have.

Hi Swiss, No it was just Cahill. I assume and hope that Jags will be back in action shortly. /just in time to book his place in the squad for SA

Equally sad but true is that we virtually swapped Walker for Evans in terms of cost.
More than sad, tragic.

Its sad that it hasn't worked out yet.

But on paper you'd have to agree that a Welsh U21 with goals at this level would have been a decent signing.

I suppose Spurs fans will be more distraught at the fact they paid 10 mill for two right backs with zero PL experience and between them have made a handful of appearances for the PL outfit.

Wait a minute All three players (Kyles and Ched) are development players aren't they:D

There is no way in the world I would ever agree that spunking £3m on Evans and getting the same back for Walker ever made sense.
And Ward's the development player...

who said anything about spunking? why would anyone suggest that you of all people would agree to spunk on Evans Len?
