Too tired and late so report is brief.

We were not spectacular but Fleetwood were very poor. We scored in a minute after good work from Basham and a keeping fumble saw Adams smash home from close range. After this we were poor and never really got going and kicked on. We were too slow to move the ball and the tempo was slow. They had a decent half hour but did not actually create anything really and were equally ponderous in possession. The game sort of limped by with nothing happening with the crowd getting frustrated with many wanting us to knock it forward quicker and some happy with the ball being kept. The crowd were a little harsh but it was poor and very slow. Fleetwood were there for the taking. Second half Coutts came on and made a difference and helped us move it quicker and the tempo increased for a 10-15 minute spell. We created a few more chances and Adams scored another opportunistic strike after good work from Wallace. The same man created the third with Sharp tapping home. It was more poor defending but showed how easy it was to get through. The last 15 minutes was like a practice game as Fleetwood were well beaten and United could now play keep ball and not have too go forward.

All in all; United deserved the win. We began the game well but then regressed badly but fortunately Fleetwood created only one half chance Howard patted out and despite frustrations from crowd we never looked in danger. We made things hard with poor passing and lack of tempo but it was still relatively comfortable. Second half we stepped it up for a spell and got the killer goals.

Fleetwood were dreadful. Maybe the worst side we have seen at the Lane. They were not much to beat with a poor slow defence, they gave it away as much us all and had nothing up top. How they beat Burton 4-0 I am not sure. United will have to play much better to beat the better teams and even though it was 3-0 it was still not convincing with the side still lacking shape, cohesion and confidence. Too many players are still passing the buck and we lack leaders still all over the side. Adams quality showed a few times and a few others did ok, Sharp worked hard with little service and Wallace and McGahey both were decent in different ways. Coutts was one of better players.

Howard 6/10 - May seem harsh but he patted two weakfish shots out making them harder than they should have been. He also fisted two crosses from his chest that should have been caught. His distribution was also poor again including one throw to no one when no United players were even looking. To defend him he has been told to go short though but he struggles to find shirts even at close range!

Freeman 7/10 - Steady enough. Got beat once near the end but made a few tackles and has still been one of our more consistent players this season.

Collins 6.5/10 - Was ok but still sold players short a few times and he lost his man badly second half when the forward's touch was poor and the striker miscontrolled a golden chance which could have converted. Still not convincing but faced poor strikers tonight.

McGahey 7/10 - Did ok tonight. His touch and technical play is limited but he kept it simple. Gave it away once first half but he did not make any other errors and just kept it simple.

Wallace 7.5/10 - Our best player for me. Got up and down the left wing. Defended sensibly and passed it well. Always looked to go forward both on and off the ball. Involved in 2nd and 3rd goals with good runs and nice crosses. Quietly becoming one of our better performers this season which I never thought would be the case but he is a far better footballer than I thought.

Basham 6.5.10 - Mixed. At times made good tackle and covered well but also was hiding behind men at times and game passed him by. Him and Hammond might be a bit similar as holding players in this area. He does not influence games enough for me and can have long spells where we don't see him.

Hammond 6.5/10 - Carrying a bit of weight and looks unfit but he did move off into space and was always willing to go square but his passing was mixed. One of few wanting to get on the ball and tried to always be available but need to see more of him. Looked another functional Basham type and hope he can offer a but more when he gets fit and more game time.

Done 6/10 - Got booked for a daft tackle and was not in the game much attacking wise. Worked hard as he always does but did not create much or have any goal chances. He was taken off after he committed another foul.

Cambell Ryce 4.5/10 - Thought he was really poor tonight and lucky to last 80 minutes or so. Gave it away constantly first half and then when he got it second half he over played or his final ball was poor. He is a great impact sub but not sure he does it when he starts enough. Was never really a threat and just gave it way too much tonight.

Adams 7/10 - He was not in the game too much and at times went down blind alleys but he scored two goals. Both were just about being in the right place but he was there. Had a few other runs and for some of his tactical flaws still is one of few players who you think might create problems for opponents.

Sharp 7/10 - Worked hard and did not get many chances before he scored a simple finish towards the end. Needed that goal after a few weeks without and some bad misses. He did a lot of his good work away from the area but the way the formation was saw all three of the most forward players interchange a lot.

Subs:

Coutts 7.5/10 - Given him a rating as he was excellent when he came on. Won the ball and moved it forward and at pace. He really did help improve the tempo and I felt he changed things a lot. Shame he struggles with 90 minutes due to fitness and he often cannot run for long periods (even seemed to run with a limp when he came on today!). I have criticised this lack of match fitness or ability to run / track back but today he looked excellent and his touch and passing was crisp and incisive.

Baxter - His first touch was poor and he gave it away a few times with erroneous touches but he also played a few neat balls too. Off at moment as he seems in and out of the side. I think playing him in front of Basham and Hammond with the three strikers might be the way to go at moment.

Woolford - Had one long range shot and then a mixed bag but game was decided by then.

A good 3 points tonight given the nature of the unconvincing display. The lack of tempo and urgency is unreal and to come out with 3 goals flatters us. The game was staggeringly boring to watch.

A win's a win though, and points are most important. I thought Che Adams was excellent, every time he's on the ball he's making something happen.

Hammond was incredibly disappointing which didn't go against my prediction. Don't think he did anything worthy of a praise. Paul Coutts came on and did well. He looked very comfortable and relaxed, although that could have been largely down to the scoreline at the time.

It's evident we've no trouble finding the net - we've got two players who are up there amongst the top scorers and that can never hurt. It's the never ending centre back problem that needs solving.

A fair report though 7 for Freeman is a bit generous. He was as tidy on the ball as ever, but a bit dozy in defence.

Fleetwood's attitude was terrible. They had a lot of possession in the first half but never really threatened at all (one shot on target all night?). Very odd for a team who needed to score a goal from 90 seconds in.

Good work Deadbat - pretty much spot on 'brief' report.

Picking up your point on Basham - he can be so frustrating - I think there's a player there, he's shown he's got some skill and can tackle when he wants but like you say, think the game passes him by. Lost count of the number of times tonight he got the ball in space and he can't wait to get rid of it and give it to someone else. This is the reason he doesn't ever seem that involved in a game.

Best game I've seen from Coutts when he came on. Looked better than Hammond who I thought didn't do bad considering it's a while since he's played first team football. Perhaps the midfield just needed a bit of healthy competition for places!

Thought the crowd were awfully quiet tonight - I know we didn't play brilliant but we scored in the 1st minute and it went flat straight away and even when we went 3-0 up, there was still no real atmosphere. WE WON 3-0!!!! What more do we want?

Can you hear me mother? 3-0!

I said 3-0!

Cambell-Ryce needs a settled run in the side. He's in and out of the team all the time and that's not going to help him find form. On his day he's the most exciting player we have. Hopefully Adkins will give him the run he needs to prove himself.

But that's not our problem - it's theirs and proof of how poor this division is.

They picked up on this on Radio Pig after the game (in between eulogising about Wendy's 'fantastic' 0-0 draw...) A caller said the team were booed off at full time (I didn't hear that). So why is the atmosphere so flat at BDTBL? Simple. Five years at this level. Yet even so, 17,879 is a fantastic attendance, but I didn't expect Radio Pig to mention this.

think nigel likes us to keep hold of the ball but some times we seem a bit negative five passes when one is needed but win saturday and we will be back in it coutts hammond and baxter midfield three for me basham drops back utb

Playing a very poor and very deep lying Fleetwood side isn't what we got Hammond for is it? I would imagine that when we play away from home and against better and more positive teams he will show his worth much better.

Three goals, clean sheet, what is there to be negative about?
I'll have a go.....
Deadbat sums it up nicely but this is a rare occasion when I feel more critical than him on several points.
First half I thought we were lamentably bad save for the first 90 secs. Keiron Wallace being the bright note, though none of the back four were seriously troubled by an even worse Fleetwood outfit. Dean Hammond, well I guess after waiting so long for him, with all the plaudits that accompanied his arrival, we were expecting something "game changing" :) In effect he was hugely disappointing - pedestrian, nervous, didn't particularly want the ball even when it kept arriving at his feet, not apparently strong and no sign of leadership qualities. However, I'm too long in the tooth to write off any professional footballer on 60 minutes showing. I await expectantly.
As has been pointed out by, I think, an unusually contrite Barny, we have two blokes full of goals up front and a handful for the best defences at this level, our problem seems to be supplying them with the type of ball they thrive on enough times in 90 mins for them to be effective.
Yes, I know, last nights scoreline and scorers flys in the face of that assertion, but few can tell me that the overall performance left one leaving bdtbl last night with a warm satisfied glow.
I'll take the win happily, but huge reservations on this showing that we are anything other than serious work in progress with huge strides required.
On a final note, yes we were shite at times, but winning shite from first minute, quite why some fuckwits feel the urge to boo ( and there were some in my vicinity!) is way beyond my understanding of football "support"!

There were one or two murmurs at ht but no booing at full time. At least not near me anyway.

A few were getting frustrated with the slow tempo and a willingness to always look for the easy pass. Still we were one nil up and looking to draw them out, which they never even attempted to do really. Can see why it was frustrating to play against and why we were struggling to get the forwards on the ball. Did we really need Basham AND Hammond in midfield though?

"Forward" "Forward" "Forward" - the shouts are still ringing in my ears. 1-0 up from the first minute and yet so many fans were incensed. Fleetwood were energetic in their covering and tackling but played so deep it made it difficult to find space.

Loads of criticism on S2 but not many solutions.

Second half we were better until the game was won, but first half we were very poor. My view is that, with the exception of Sharp, not a single forward player was active enough last night, simply not enough movement. Ryce was a statue, Adams has a lot to learn, Basham hides, Hammond looked like a clone of Coutts ( even has the duck feet and waddle) and Done doesn't seem happy pushed out wide and I don't blame him. Midfielders hoping to make forward balls could only see one player making runs, the rest were inactive, it's not good enough. Second half was better.

Hammond will be a big asset no doubt but last night he was average and it was a surprise he went straight into the team, suppose it shows how worried the manager is about central midfield.

K.Wallace is coming on in leaps and bounds and was bright and sharp from the off and then involved in all three goals.; he's a good athlete and a very calm, controlled character. He gave Done a real dressing down over making himself available mid first half and that shows his confidence is growing. Harris might have a job getting his place back.

I hope we haven't got a problem with Done. He seems to get a lot of criticism from other players when you'd think his all action style would endear him. However he has different body language when out wide and looks miserable.

McGahey has had a really good week. Howard's distribution was uneasy, he seems out of tune with the team, but again lack of movement and availability doesn't help him.

Basham needs to claim a central defensive position before long otherwise he might end up on the bench if we find other solutions there.

A word for Collins. 100% trier, experienced and competitive and had another good game defensively, if not offensively.

He does look out of sorts on the left of a 3, on the otherside Che kept comming well inside when JCR went down the wing-ish

It didnt work work the same when JCR came over to the left, and Done didnt end up inside

Done is probably best as 1 of 2 up front, not in a 3 and out wide left.

Woolford might be better, which leaves Matty on the Bench, where he and us dont want him

Adkins getting more options, which is good, unless it starts to confuse him and he cant decide on who, how and where

Can't comment on last night, but when he's played centrally in 4-4-2 he's become a bit redundant, probably instructed to not go too far forward (because we've used attacking wide men and two up front), while also not being asked to do too much on the ball, as playmaking is not his strength.

A midfield partnership of Basham and Hammond is likely to lack creativity. Our 2005/06 promotion winning midfield of Jags and Monty (first part of the season) was a bit similar, but our playing style was different back then.

Forgot all about JCR. Frankly, now Adkins has more options he ought to be way down the pecking order. Good as an impact sub perhaps if we need to chase the game late on. Too fussy by far, just hasn't got a first time ball in his locker.

A strange game last night when we never looked like losing yet for large parts of the game did have a clue of how to get the second goal !
I thought the performance very lacklustre yet how can we complain with a 3-0 home victory.
Collins and MacGahey were never tested, Done looked acutely 'out of sorts', Freeman and Wallace looked good and Sharp and Adams looked dangerous, JCR was appalling and Coutts was very good when he came on, as for the rest very ordinary yet three goals against a clean sheet is just what the doctor ordered !
It really showed how poor this division is this year and we need to get promotion no ifs or buts - this is the year !
It will be interesting to see how Hammond progresses as he gets more match fit but it was very frustrating to see the team play sideways and backwards for large parts of the game.
Mr Adkins didn't appear very pleased in the first half yet glossed over the performance in the after match interview
Don't think it will be as easy on Saturday !

Think he was more concerned about getting on Showboat again, totally overplays down the wing when his could get a quick simple cross into the box

We have conceded 9 goals in the last 8 games and that with a rooky left back and a young right back. Central defence has done well.

He has got a 'first time ball' in his locker, but he's so pitifully right-footed that the defender only needs to block this line of attack and he needs to go back, start again and hope the defender has forgotten he's only got one foot...

“Hammond was incredibly disappointing which didn't go against my prediction. Don't think he did anything worthy of a praise”

Another classic example of a fan that knows bugger all about football. Hammond was poor in possession for a fare share of the game but he did 3 things that have been lacking all too often this season:

1. Showed for the ball and didn’t hide even though he gave it away a fair bit.
2. Showed positional discipline allowing Basham to chase around more and making it very difficult to play through us.
3. Broke things up when necessary either with a tackle or a foul.

His performances was Michael Doyle esque last night and I hope with games under his belt and a better understanding with his teammates, he can add more to his game. Having him in the side meant we could play 442 and him and Bash provided a platform for Done, Adams, Sharp and JCR to play from. Didn’t happen so much for the wingers but the fullbacks behind them made up for that.

I still think that generally the atmosphere has suffered ever since it went all-seater. Even when we were shite back in the mid eighties, our fans seemed a lot more vocal, and in a positive way.

I thought Basham had his best game for ages last night. Helped by the man next to him not being invisible in the face of opposition but also because Fleetwood decided to play deep rather than try and play further up the pitch where other teams have had a lot of success against us. . . which was odd considering they should have been full of beans on the back of the weekend's game.

It just seems to be that his redundancy is more down to his own way of playing rather than the overall tactics. Many a time he got the ball in space and immediately passed it, sometimes to a team mate under pressure, rather than holding it and having a look for a better option. I could understand it if he didn't seem comfortable on the ball, but he's shown glimpses of real skill, his cruyff style turn for example, which shows he can play. Perhaps he lacks confidence in his own ability or it's fear of being to blame for losing the ball - I don't know.
