yeah, can't believe we used to travel everywhere to watch that shit!We used to take on the best in the land and beat them quite often over a 3 year period. Hated it though as we just lumped it.![]()
This was the game a young lass run on to pitch with her tits out and tried to grope Deano. He wasn't interested, if only I was in his place, would have made history.
Worst commentator ever.
And these old vids really do show our tactics back then. 'elpiton, chase, swarm, cross, repeat.
Got to stick up for Daryl Bentley here! Never ever miss an opportunity to listen to Daryll Bentley commentating on United! I know people say he's awful but at the time it didn't seem that and I love his passion and ITS THERE each time we score! He obviously said that as a breakthrough each time but obver a season hearing Bentley saying ITS THERE each time gets funnier and funnier! Occasionaly he breaks the mold with something like THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL GOAL BY (insert players name!)
As for the action, I forgot how nimble Deano was and I truly believe there isn't a team in the league that Deane wouldn't have added to in those early 90's. Target man wise, and I know Deano was more than that, he was probably the best at the time. I'm biased but how many had Deano's pace, could shoot with either foot, head so well, cross as fast and accurate and hold the ball up/flick on as well!?
Got to agree re deano and commentator
A early memory of mine is watching the goals from the 6 -1 home game back on highlights ( think it was the 100 years 100 goals video) ( I want to say Chester , anyone ?). When Deane and agana both scored hat tricks ! He was going bonkers that day with his ' and its there yes'
The streaker was in March 1991 when Gage was playing for Villa thenThis was the game a young lass run on to pitch with her tits out and tried to grope Deano. He wasn't interested, if only I was in his place, would have made history.

I know where you're coming from John but you have to view it in its context. Yes we were direct, but even Arsenal were then and all teams played more direct football then. Not as direct as us, granted, but still far more longer ball than today.
Also as Bassett always said, he played football for the players we had, and do we really believe we'd have done as well as we did with the players we had trying to play decent football?! We'd have never even got into the 1st division, and if Harry had tried to sign players that could play that way then they would have either cost too much for our limited budget, or would not be able to do it against much better sides doing the same style - not just the big 6 or 7 but teams like Villa for example. So he played the percentages and it worked. We pressed high and with high energy and so many times teams gave the ball away trying to play football out of the defence (and don't forget the pitches were crap back then, even at the bigger clubs) and we scored goals from other teams mistakes.
This. As the Villa clip demonstrates there was plenty of skill on display, just in the final third not around the Hal way line.
On good days, at least. On bad days (I recall a 0-0 draw against Wimbledon) it was like watching eleven side wrestling with a ball thrown in as a trip hazard.
