In these difficult times for the people of Kiev, I would like to post a reminder of when their wonderful football team, Dynamo Kiev, visited the Lane for a friendly in February 1972.

Ukraine was part of the USSR at the time and Dynamo were the best team in their league, a league which included their great rivals from Moscow. Dynamo provided most of the players for the Soviet national team at that time.

The star man was Oleg Blokhin. He had an unusual stride pattern and unbelievable pace. He was essentially a winger who scored many goals. I can’t remember his performance on the night but reputationally he is probably one of the best players ever to set foot on the hallowed turf.

Kiev won 2-1. Gil Reece scored for us and, from memory, it may have been the debut of Tom McAlister.

With best wishes to the people of Kiev and Ukraine.

I went to the game but cannot recall anything about it, but as i cant recall what i had for breakfast its not surprising, was lev yashin involved as we used to sing about hodgy being better than yashin

Blokhin came on as sub and missed a chance. Yes, McAlister's debut. See link below for report

My memory was during the warm up all their team were shooting from 25/30 yards and flying in. All around us we could not believe it,
then if my recollection is right they scored two early goals and after that we were the better team. Could be wrong, being a young impressionable teenager
at the time, they may have battered us all game!

Thanks for this detail silent. I missed it when first posted. I notice a couple of the newspapers refer to Dynamo Kiev as "Russians". There is some good footage of Blokhin on You Tube.

Yashin certainly not involved in this game. I have asked before if Yashin has ever played at the Lane but no answer received. Anyone?

Hang on, I could swear Blokhin plays for us....................... every time the opposition attacks, the bloke behind me on the kop screams "Get a Block in"!

Rudakov was Kiev's keeper. Played for USSR in the Euro final a few months later
