Blackwell rues Martin decision

Last updated: 15th August 2008

Kevin Blackwell is disappointed Manchester United winger Lee Martin joined Nottingham Forest ahead of Sheffield United.

Martin spent a spell on loan at Bramall Lane last season and Blades boss Blackwell was keen to re-sign the youngster.

However, Martin moved to the City Ground earlier this week, leaving Blackwell to look elsewhere for a new left-sided midfielder.

"I am disappointed because Lee is a quality player," Blackwell told the club's official website.
Wasn't to be

"Lee made it clear that he wanted to come back here and I would have been interested, but it wasn't to be.

"However, I do want to bring in a real quality attacking, left-sided player rather than just get by, and I am prepared to wait until I can get him, even until January if necessary."

Martin made his Forest debut against Morecambe in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night and is happy with his decision to join the Championship new boys.

He told Forest's official website: "Sir Alex Ferguson told me of Forest's interest after the game against Juventus last week, but he didn't know what to do because he had a few injuries and illness.

"I was obviously interested and then he phoned me on Sunday night and said that I could go. I then spoke to Colin Calderwood and it moved on from there."

I'm pretty disappointed on this one to be honest but i find it quite odd that he would chose forest over us if indeed it was a straight choice between the two.

One thing is for sure, he will never get a regular place in the Man Utd team so he might as well make a permanent move rather then continue to be farmed out on loan.

The prospect of having to wait until January for a new midfielder worries me; i suspect the outcome of the next couple of fixtures will have a direct effect on just how urgent the recruitment drive is.

To me KB is speaking about a specific target and the message is to the selling club that he won't be paying over the odds - prob in the last year of his contract.

Blakie is really sayin:

1. We have signed someone it will be announced in the next few days.
2. Forget it we aint signing no one.

he was to lightweight for me always getting knocked off of the ball he might be a skillful player but he is not a patch on David Cotterill.
