Blackwell on Radio 5

Doing the summarising at WBA - QPR last night.

I think I've sussed him out. When he's coming out with his bull the speed at which he talks increases massively and it turns into a load of horrendous waffle. One example of this last night was when he said 'we had 9 major players out game after game.' Not heard nine before but it's going down isn't it?

He then panicked a bit when that idiotic Clem bloke asked him about Laws and whether he'd been in touch as they seem to be relatively good mates. As usual KB started talking about himself being sacked at Leeds but it was quite clear to me that KB and Laws do not get on at all and only chatted due to the local rivalry and media comittments. He did though speak very well about the difficulties at Wednesday for any manager.

In general, when he talked about football he was pretty interesting and I enjoyed it. He obviously loves football.

Thanks for your concern Judge, it means alot to me.

I was actually trying to say I enjoyed listening to most of his comments. Obviously I'm going to have a go at his efforts to explain why we went 7 or 8 without a win but I actually think my post is a decent attempt at addressing the problems you believe I have. You can't have read it properly!

I think Blackwell is very fortunate to have McCabe as Chairman
Very few Chairman with any ambition would have put up with both Blackwells style and results this season
Perhaps they deserve each other
Just don't dress it up as ambition Mr McCabe It is down to return on capital and keeping the Blades in the top half of the league so that attendances stand up!

good post exactly what i thought. Listened to quite a bit as was traveling back from bradford so caught a full hour. I came to the conclusion that he has the gift of the gab and also that every manager is his best mate, he was off to the dressing to see "dimo" after the game.

I think thats the thing with Blackie and a lot of managers, they put on an old pals act at times and really its just false.

They love the game and know little else because he's only ever played football and then went into coaching so it can often be hit or miss on the media circuit. I do feel Blackie knows football.

I like the way that Gary Speed talks, seems quite an intelligent fella, so its nice to hear him come on the radio post match instead of Blackie or Ellis. Although its Blackies responsibility and he shouldn't shirk it when things don't go well.

Of course just because they have passion for the game doesn't make them good or bad managers/ coaches and thats not my point, I don't really have a point here.

I just wish Blackie wouldn't make so many excuses, talk about himself less and actually, sometimes, just say "we weren't good enough" or "I got the tactics wrong" or whatever. NW had a certain style that made his excuses easier to digest, I don't believe that Blackie is as charismatic as NW in that way.

I also get the impression that Blackie likes to be liked...

Look at O'Driscoll: Terrible on the radio; very impressive on the pitch.

I think that's an interesting point. It would seem that managers should be honest and admit when their side hasn't been good enough, i agree. However i have noticed that there are some top managers who refuse to slate their players in public or to the media.

For example i have never heard Mourinho say 'we weren't good enough' or slate his players in front of the press, and other managers such as Wenger also are cautious in criticising their own teams.

Warnock was similar in the respect that he would always make excuses about the ref/conditions/injuries etc. Laws on the other hand you would hear every week on the radio crying about how bad the whole team was.

Although i'm sure these managers do scream and shout at their players in the dressing room, they keep it there. I think this is because they know they played awful, but maybe it's good for team morale if you know that a manager will tell you if you were crap, but will defend you to the outside, as this creates a 'us and them' feeling within the team. I don't think it's neccesarily dishonesty, just a way of showing a united front.

Blades aren't mugs, a bit of honesty and respect for the wagepayers (ooops, FANS) wouldn't go amiss.

Donny's results are good enough to keep them in the 2nd tier of English football. Quite an achievement you might think, for a club of their size and history.

They are also a delight to watch. That matters as well. If you don't think so, watch our season ticket sales next year if Blacko is still in charge and still churning out turgid non-football.

I don't think slating the players is necessary, it'd get us nowhere, but the honesty of the manager taking the rap would go much further... or perhaps the players would hide behind this...
