Blackwell goes, but who comes in?

How much have they spent to get where they are?
What level of players has got them where they are?
What has O'Driscoll managed that three previous Sheffield United managers didn't?

Donny should feel privileged to be where they are. But there's one man in particular they should be thanking beyond their excellent owner.

1. As much if not a little more than most sides promoted from L1 to the CCC.
2. Players clearly good enough to hack in the CCC
3. Go on tell me, I'm not getting it..........

Who should they be thanking? Is it Penney who took them from a crap conference side and got them promoted twice?

Sorry, we're evidently not going to agree on this, but for a manager to create a footballing side out of scraps, take it to promotion, then play the same standard of football at a higher level and achieve mid-table two seasons on the trot is a very commendable achievement.

I really am amazed that people still claim that Donny (and therefore the players and O'Driscoll) are not doing anything special by surviving in CCC.

I fully accept that they have got where they are without spending much and it is an amazing acievement considering they were bottom of the conference not long ago. However its not those acheivements that is being held up as to why O'Driscoll would be a good choice. Its the supposedly entertaining football that Doncaster play which personally I have never encountered in the few times I have seen them. When they came to us all they seem to do was park the bus.

I've said from Blackie being appointed that he should get three years to build the side he wants. The financial state of football's changed that with him having his players sold from under him. I still think he should be given until the end of the season at least

For me it has to be Mark Bobbins!

He's turned a squad of players that were losing every week into one that is basically winning every week.

He's spent nothing.

The same scenario at the Millers.

He's authoritive without screaming and balling. It's plainly obvious he commands the players respect.

He is destined for better things imo. So for those reasons, I'm sure he could be a success at BDTBL.

Speed, with a Director of Football to guide him. Paul Hart is without a club, and his track record for developing young players is second to none.

Warnock/McCall ,cheap, effective, passionate, available. With a view to McCall getting more experience to add to what he has already gained.

Woah! Alot of names coming out of this.
Personally, I would say we stick with what weve got until end of the season. Blackwell is being judged on this season, surely play-offs is surely was his target for the season. Anything lower and he has failed.

I would like to see good football return to the Lane. But it has to be effective football.

We missed the boat on Billy Davies when he was a free agent, I said this at the time.

To bring in....
Steve Coppell
George Burley
Curbishley
Mark Hughes ;)
Paul Jewell
Jim Magilton
David O'Leary
Lawrie Sanchez
Southgate

That's obviously providing you don't want to pay compensation

Are you kidding?!

The only person who is even remotely considerable is Coppell, and he probably wouldn't want to move up north.

Paul Jewell my arse!

Paul Jewell my arse!

And so say all of us. :)

But George Burley? His teams play superb football. He got Ipswich promoted. Brought through some great youngsters. What more can we ask in a candidate?

I'm assuming the booze rumours aren't true, but hey, nobody's perfect.

True, but I doubt we could afford him TBH.

coppell is a long ball merchant.. no chance.. we need to completely build the club philosophy from the bottom up.. i'd go for dario gradi personally.. imagine what he could do with a club with our resources
I despise long - ball football as much as anyone and more than most. If you were remotely correct I would not be advocating him for manager.

No-one who saw his excellent Reading team would agree with your assertion. Sorry.

Agreed. His Palace side were horrible to watch, but Reading were excellent. No long ball or passing dogma. Just neat, intelligent, purposeful football.

Took him three seasons to get there, but well worth the wait.

Good God, If Paul Hart or Alan Curbishley ever became manager of Sheffield United I would find it very hard to keep going to Bramall Lane.

I hate tre idea of a director of football. Not proven as a concept in the UK, and why we should outlay another £500,000 per year is beyond me?

UTB

Agreed. I dont see the point of it. The manager should have full control of team affairs.

I wouldnt mind Curbishley (even though hes a shammer). Paul Hart would depress me. He's one of the most monotone, un-enthusiastic characters in football - much like O'Driscoll. I would be suicidal during the interviews.

If I'd just seen 90 minutes good football the manager could recite Gregorian Chant during the interview so far as I'm concerned.

Paul Hart is a rubbish manager. He's proved it time and again. At the moment there's every reson to think O'Driscoll is a good one. Sod the interviews!

Fair point about interviews. But O'Driscoll is overrated IMO and nothing will change my mind. I have seen Donny Rovers on numerous occasions and am yet to see this so called 'fabulous passing football.' Anyone who would care to look at the league table today would see that theyre 2 points off the relegation zone.

Decent manager with a mediocre group of players playing above themselves. Thats all. All this talk about them as an outfit is wildly exaggerated.

Much better prospect than O'Driscoll for me. Think S O'D would be a disaster in the Premier League with his expansive style of football.

It's academic though as we can't afford compensation.

Said it before and I'll say it again...Paul Lambert...done an unbelievable job at Norwich after doing the same at Colchester ...problem is he may view Norwich as a bigger club/better long term prospect than us!!

John Hughes from Hibs. Cracking man manager cracking football to watch, get him while we can he is premier league bound.

In Yogi we trust.:D

Lee Clark would work for me , but the Town fan who runs the local chippy isn't too enamoured. Thinks they play well because he's spent big.

For us, its got to be someone who can bring youth players through as we cant afford to sign players. Someone who can get 150% out of the players talents & can get the players playing as a team.

In short, we need Warnock Mk2.

I agree. Mark Robins would be much more suitable for United. Barnsley dont have a lot of money either but he's already waved at O'Driscoll and his boys on the way past. Better manager for me and got Rotherham playing very well - and they really have got fuck all!
