The Blades Way as Blackie becomes Sheffield United's new manager

Kevin Blackwell was today (Saturday 3rd May) appointed as Sheffield United's manager on a long term basis.

Currently overseeing the Blades remarkable late season push for the Championship play-offs, Mr Blackwell has accepted a three year contract after far-reaching talks with PLC Chairman Kevin McCabe centred on the development of football affairs.

Mr Blackwell will be a focal figure in the development of The Blades Way - an ethos which will drive the club forward on and off the pitch.

"I am very proud to take up this appointment," said the former Blades assistant manager. "The club is very close to my heart and I am delighted to be given the opportunity of delivering the ambitions of the chairman, the board and the wonderful fans of this club."

During talks with the chairman Mr Blackwell outlined how his Blades Way culture - inspirational for the players in their pursuit of a play-off place. This will be adopted and extended across the club.

"I had identified values that, from the car park attendant to the chairman, we should embrace if we are to realise our aims.

"I believe we are a top ten club in the making. With hard work, discipline, the will to succeed, determination, responsibility, commitment to excellence and pride we can get there - The Blades Way!"

Mr Blackwell, who took charge of team affairs after Bryan Robson left the club in February of this year, will head up a football management team with Sam Ellis as his assistant.

"Kevin perfectly fits the bill as our manager," said Mr McCabe. "We have reviewed and enjoyed long discussions about how our football division should operate. He is experienced but at the same time brings fresh and innovative ideas particular recognising what we are trying to achieve with our overseas sister clubs in China, Hungary, and Australia as well as our partnership with Sao Paulo in Brazil.

"Kevin and I will continue to talk and plan over the coming weeks. Sheffield United is different to other football clubs and we intend to make the most of that. We have many aims and aspirations both here and abroad, so we will continue to recruit football executives to build the football division who can assist Kevin.

"The Premier League is our aim through the development of a quality squad of 22-24 players made up from the nucleus of current group but improved with new signings, young academy players and links with our sister clubs," added Mr McCabe

Mr Blackwell is expected to travel to Brazil during the close season for meetings with Sao Paulo officials.

3 years! I for one am pleased, just gotta wait and see how it pans out, tomorrow is going to be good decider for Blackie and the fans. If we lose, some might say it was wrong, but just looking at what he's done, he deserves the job :)

No suprise but very welome news indeed.

Exactly. Thinking of other managers who may or may not have been in McCabe's thinking, I can't really see that we could have done any better. Blackie has got the team playing well, and with the passion that was sorely missing under Robson.
Next season will be a good one, even if we miss the play-offs, which are a distant dream at the moment.

Brilliant news, made my day. Onwards and upwards :D:D:D:D:D

Fantastic news and already looking forward to next season with Blackie.
now bring on the Saints :D

I'm happy with the apointment, but I think we should have gone with 2 and not 3 years.

I know some people will disagree, but there we go.

Lets get play off place tomorrow and bring it in with a bang....

not a surprise by any account, but good news all the same
