Why is it? He doesn't have to accept the drop. I'm a contractor and my contract has a disclaimer that my employers can change the terms and conditions with 2 weeks notice - that includes salary and job role.
It wouldn't be wise for them to drop my wages 50% as i wouldnt hang around, i'd imagine the same would go for Billy. But lets face it. He came to us as a goal scorer. Yet hasn't scored goals for us. Perhaps we could have him on the trades descriptions act
You might be right but that wasn't really what I was saying either.
What I meant was his contract doesn't state that he has to play. This scenario that has been posed is just effectively saying "please yourself, Billy; sit on your arse and claim your pay cheques each week but if you want to play again we'll have to renegotiate your contract with you taking a 50% hit." There's nothing illegal about that. It's just not very nice.
I'm not saying I think it's true, by the way.
