SHEFFIELD United chief executive Trevor Birch has revealed the club are in the process of finalising their list of summer transfer targets.
Kevin Blackwell's side travel to arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday for one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures on the region's sporting calendar.
But, behind the scenes, the pain-staking process of overhauling United's squad has already begun in earnest. A fresh round of talks with midfielder Nick Montgomery and his representative are also understood to have been scheduled before the trip to Hillsborough.
"We are all working very closely together," Birch told The Star. "We are sifting through a number of possibilities, identifying new names and also striking some off the list who we don't think have what is required. It's an on-going process."
Birch, who also confirmed United are investigating ways of improving their relationship with development partners Ferencvaros and Central Coast Mariners added: "Coupled with that we also have the likes of Paddy Kenny and Billy Sharp to come back into the fold while we are hopeful that Jamie Ward will also be ready for pre-season training."
Sharp, who has scored 15 goals since joining United neighbours Doncaster Rovers on loan, enjoys cult-hero status on the terraces at Bramall Lane. However, despite Rovers efforts to try and secure his services on a permanent basis, it would appear United are set to recall him when his terms at the Keepmoat Stadium expire.
