following on from the favourite game thread, what's the biggest game you ever missed?

Mine was the Leeds game when Jags fired home from 30 yards with a couple of minutes to go.

The girlfriend at the time was rushed to hospital so I had to give my tickets away.

it was actually the first home game since 1975 that i missed.

FA Cup Semi vs Pigs at Wembley
Was on holiday in France with the family (well you don't plan for the Blades to be in the Semi of the FA Cup do you?)
Nothing on the World Service or anything at all on the Radio I could find - (took a SW Radio in case as well)
Had to phone my brother - who was at the game with my Dad. My sister in law answered the phone (not a fan of football) and the first words she uttered were, "Oh Hi, you lost!"
Crest fallen was not the word for it :(

Sheffield United 1 Cardiff City 0 - Wembley 1925.

Born 30 odd years too late.

Still, it's only another 13 years until we can say that it's 100 years since the Blades won owt!

Sheffield United 3-0 West Ham Premiership

I know ultimatley it was futile, but in my mind, I thought this win had guaranteed us survival. When I saw the goals, I was devestated I missed it. especially Tonges nuclear missile into the top corner. Made even sweeter by the fact it flew past Green AKA Bell end.
Anyone remember the same season we lost 1-0 at Upton Park. We equalised late on and 5"6 Geary was penalised for a foul on 6"2 Green. Hardly any players appealed but the ref disallowed the goal.
In the post match interview, Green was asked "what are your feelings on the disallowed goal?"
Green "It was a foul"
Reporter "Sheffield Uited are very unhappy with the decision"
Green "Its sheff utd their always moaning about something"

Or words to that effect.

Unbelievably I missed two FA Cup semi finals.

The first in 1993 as my Aunt was getting married and my mother went ballistic when me and the old man even considered missing it and then missed the 98(?) semi final against Newcastle as I'd booked a holiday never dreaming we'd be close to a semi final that year.

That said, I didn't miss too much performance wise - though I was absolutely gutted to miss the Pig match at Wembley at the time.

I've never actually seen us score a goal in three play off finals and the FA Cup final I did actually make against Arsenal. We really do freeze on the big stage!!

had tickets to blades V Leeds in FA cup quater final in 2003 but my plane got delayed coming home so missed it, almost delayed long enough to watch it in a sports bar out there but about 30 mins before kick off we finally got called for the flight, tried really hard not to see the score but then noticed it out of the corner of my eye at Manc airport.

Other one must be Leicster away when we got promoted.

Owls 4 - 0 Blades - Boxing Day

Glad I missed it too!

Wished I'd missed all the Play-off finals too plus the semi-final at Wembley.

I was away for the preston play-off game at the lane the other year
watched it sat in a bar in alcudia with about 12 preston fans

FA Cup Semi-Final v Newcastle.....crazily said during the coventry game that if we got to semi-final my sister could go because id been to loads of games that season. I thought me dad would have forgotten but then he only bought two tickets.....d'oh.....never again.

i missed the leicester match ,i had the choice of going to blackburn on the tuesday or leicester on the satdi and i was convinced we would be promoted on the tuesday night

we drew 0-0 and i missed probably the greatest blades experience of my lifetime
i was only 16 and didnt sleep at all between the blackburn and leicester games

remember getting on the bus in high st at 5 o clock and a pissed up bloke getting on and asking us how united had gone on " we won were promoted " said i "how did the pigs go on " he said "they lost their down "
"good i hate them bastards "

probably the most enjoyable conversation of my lifetime

Blades 5 Arsenal 0 in Sept 1973. I was in my third week at my boarding school. I was gobsmacked when i found out the score from the newspapers in the next day. It was a mixture of delight that we thrashed Arsenal and regret that I wasnt at the match (making me feel more homesick!)

in fact fuck i'll come clean the biggest match i missed was the 2-0 derby defeat of the pigs ,the first top level derby in donkeys years and something i had been looking forward to all my blades supporting life

i was in worcester nick on remand ,i remember a copper coming into my cell a few days before and telling me we had sold agana to notts county for under a million i was released on the day before the game ( i was innocent of course ) and went round to my mates who lived on shoreham st and listened to the crowd noise through his attic window with the radio on

elated we beat the arrogant cocky gobshites from s6 but gutted i couldnt get a ticket

Missed boxing day, and the last play off final due to the wife booking a holiday without checking. As it happens, I'm glad she did.

UTB

I missed the Liverpool semi-final in the League Cup, as for some reason United had permitted Season Ticket holder's to purchase up to 4 tickets each, and when my mate went down to get my ticket with his ST they had nearly sold out, and was not doing it any more.

The biggest travesty was that if they had the loyalty point's system i would have been guaranteed a ticket, rather than someone getting a ticket for a big game to see Liverpool and not going the rest of the time.

The end result was i went and watched it in the Travellers at Ecclesfield and got absolutely slaughtered on jugs of Carling.

Leicester away in 1990...couldn't get a ticket.

But wouldn't have swapped it for the night out we had in Woodseats and on London Road that night as we went to see the coach come home... :)

>what's the biggest game you ever missed?
entire premiership season due to illness :(

To many for me to mention, as i am a bad omen every time i go to a big game (fa cup semis, playoffs) we lose oh yeah we lose them all forget that.

BOBL for me against WBA gutted i missed warnocks finest hour.

Nobody has!

Ha ha ha, yep. You have to laugh or you'd cry...

Does it have to be 'Blades? I went to cut the grass when Liverpool were losing 3-0 at half time in the Champions League final...

Sheffield United 3-0 West Ham Premiership

Mine too, I had to choose between this match and Newcastle I think as I couldn't commit to both, I was keen for this one, my friends wanted to go to the Newcastle match as they had a Geordie mate who was going.

I've never let them choose a match since.

united 3 owls 2 3 years back , saw the fixtures, booked flight to come home friday in time for the game
then tv moved it to friday, was in flight through out the game

FA Cup Semi V Pigs @ Wembley, holiday was already booked and I was under threat of death if i even considered cancelling!!!!

The Swansea 5 1?
Promotion not assured til a few days after, a 2 2 at Wolves.
