Your first sentence makes absolutely no sense. You openly admit that you’ve never heard of the term “culture carrier”beyond an SUFC context, you turn down the opportunity to educate yourself as to what the term means when used commonly across businesses, and then you want to start an argument with me about something you don’t understand.
You mentioned the team of 2021, which is a good place to start an explanation. The stated cultural values of our club at that time were to outrun, outfight and outperform the opposition. I think that’s a pretty good description of what most fans would think of and expect as the culture of the club. Most of us recognise that, given our longstanding financial restrictions, we would expect our players to work harder than average ( ie outrun and outfight) if we expect to outperform the opposition. The epitome of that philosophy in 2021was George Baldock. He turned corporate words into practical actions on an everyday basis - he outran, outfought and outperformed his direct competitor in pretty much every match he played, and as a result he inspired his colleagues on the pitch and his fans on the terraces to try to do the same. George Baldock was the very definition of a culture carrier. George Baldock also thumped his badge and celebrated team success wildly. He even drank Peroni - most memorably while sitting alone in the dugout reflecting on the post-match promotion celebrations ( what a treasured photo that is). But the badge-thumping and beer drinking had nothing to do with his role as a culture carrier - it was all about turning corporate values into reality through everyday personal action.
So when you say you would begin by sacking culture carriers, you are saying that you would have sacked George Baldock. It’s a graphic example of your lack of understanding of your ignorance on the topic. It’s clear that you have no understanding of what the term culture carrier means. You just want to make up your own definition with which to beat the club
Moving forward, you ask what has gone wrong, and why our culture carriers went missing last season. The reason is that we have very few of them still in the squad, and have too many people who are incapable of outrunning the opposition, who are more interested in hiding than fighting, and who accept defeat too easily. We have a few - I would list Sydie Peck and Callum O’Hare as a couple of examples. Wilder is right to say that the team needs more culture carriers. He understands what culture carriers are.
But banging on about culture carriers is to miss two major reasons why the team has been on a downward trajectory. Let’s go back to the Baldock example - not only was he a model culture carrier, but he was a pretty good footballer, and he operated in a team that had structure, plans, and adaptability to circumstances, and a team in which everybody knew their own and others roles inside out, and meshed near perfectly as a system. Our current team has very few culture carriers, little idea of any on field plan, and some very average players ( as well as some good ones). The only problem we have with culture carriers is that we don’t have enough of them. More importantly, we recruit average players much of the time, and then put them in a team that appears to lack any real plan, so that they look even worse. Those are our biggest problems.
Your starting point of sacking culture carriers is as wrong as it’s possible to be - we’d simply further weaken an already existing weakness, and we should be focusing on more important issues, particularly team structure, organisation and method.
