We've got the worst manager thread and let's be right that could break the world record for the number of posts, but lets put a positive slant on this - who's the dogs bollocks? My pick is the guy that came in on a downer, inherited a squad of hopeless, spineless individuals and in one preseason overhauled and transformed crap into gold.

The one and only Dave Bassett, turned rubbish into success and brought the buzz back, for me the best ever.
 



No doubt about this one. 9 and half seasons in top division

We won most of our silverware under his stewardship.
 
I agree with Bassett.

Amazing to think a Landaner (from doawn soarth) became one of us and part of our DNA.
Used to love his post match interviews, refreshingly honest, almost too honest.
Had a big thing on teamwork, effort, bottle, character being more important than talent.

There are some similarities with Wilder and Bassett as both quickly created special spirit within the club. It would be interesting to ask Wilder who the biggest influence has been in his management style.

Warnock wasn't universally liked because he was quick to make excuses after every defeat and a sore loser.
Where as Bassett (like Wilder) was universally popular amongst Blades.

Bassett
followed by Wilder (assuming we're promoted in his 1st season but what he's done already almost seems like a miracle. He could go on to be the legend above Bassett)

followed by Warnock (some great nights and he put us on the map)
followed by Kendall (overnight the style changed as we started passing it around like Barcelona)

Wilder has the best win percentage of any permanent manager - 54.55% - but maybe too few games as yet to make that a valid statistic. Wilson is the only other manager to get above the 50% mark, which is where the quality over quantity argument comes in.
Even with such results I never felt Wilson was a great manager. Nothing to do with his pig connections I should add. Perhaps he was lucky to have Ched to start with. Still don't think it was right to sack him when they did.
The best managers are those that achieve over a sustained period of time: Harris, Bassett and Warnock, probably in that order for me.
 



In my time following the Blades , I was to young to appreciate the manager / managers of the time back then .
For me it's Sir Dave (for all his faults ?) , we had under him the best run in my opinion.
Relegation at that stage it was almost to late to save us , two consecutive promotions , staying in the top flight after 2 disastrous starts , especially the first season .
Honourable mentions to Porterfield , Spackman , and Kendall ,
then uncle Colin for a couple of seasons , good championship , shit premiership manager .
So far me arise Sir Dave Bassett in my time , so far Uniteds best manager ( to date ) .

I try to forget Neil Warnock ever happened to be honest, due to his conduct from 2005 to present-day.

If the cirumstances allow it, Chris Wilder will be everything Colin was, and more importantly, everything he wasn't.

Time Tyler give it time , hope where having this conversation in a few years time bout Chris ,
Uncle Col was a good manager , well after 7 years he was , but so full of fucking shit ,
Blame this that and the other , a poor mans fergie .
Lost all respect for him because every time he goes to a new club , best this that , and the other .
Botox fucker .
Oh and beating us 3-0 at the lane , and listening to those 3 cockneys all the to Manchester banging on and fucking on bout how great a manager he was .
 
How about a top 3, from my living years.........
Harry Bassett.
Neil Warnock.
Chrissy Wilder.
 
In my time watching United it has to be Mr Bassett.
Also a special mentions to Porterfield(dread to think where we could have ended up if he hadn't got us out of the 4 Division at the 1st attempt).
Kendall (probably played the best football I have ever seen by United).
Warnock ( Purely for the triple assault season, don't think I have ever come out of Bramall lane buzzing that many times in one season).
 
Has to be DB for me, although Harris was in charge when I first started going I was too young to appreciate what I was watching.
 
Statistically, Harris was a great manager but that was a long time ago, money wasn't king and the game is totally different now.
We had some great times under both Bassett and Warnock, and it could be that CW will eventually join them. But apart from plain statistics, what the latter three brought/is bringing was the 'Blades Spirit' which chimes with our fans. We love a team of grafters with a never-say-die attitude. Don't the fans of every club? Absolutely not. On Football Heaven every night there's a bunch of whingeing pig fans - a team in a position we'd die for - who are now criticising Carvalhal. They're part-timers who have quickly forgotten last season and who think just throwing money at the team will equal success.
We had some great times (in the Cups) under Clough but this just highlighted how he couldn't motivate the team in the bread-and-butter League games.
As I say, a 'best SUFC manager' is a lot more than just win percentages - it's proving he's 'one of us' and, as our attendances are proving - we will buy into that.
 
Agree with a lot of that Graf.
Certainly DB & Warnock both had major jobs on of pulling us out of the brown stuff with little resources .......& without wanting to tempt fate things are starting to look promising under CW in similar circumstances.
 
The teams under Harris, Bassett and Warnock felt close to the fans and were accessible to us, especially under Saint Dave. John Harris did very well but did get us relegated in 1968 too, he soon solved that little problem by bringing in some gems but did seem to neglect the reserves as time went on. In his first years he had great youth coming through, by the time he finished wi` us to let furphy manage we had very little depth... If anyone from Badger through to Woody was injured ... it was staniforth , goulding or ... the old battleaxe that did the laundry.

Dave gave us great days with very little money spent and the number of his squad that still live in the area or who regularly visit the Lane or keep an eye on our results shows what a great togetherness we had from 1988 to 1993. They`d give their all.

Dave 1st , just over Harris , 3rd i guess has to go to warnock but tragically he was useless in the top league unlike the other two, so really it`s Dave and John then daylight, then warnock, Furphy, Kendall , the rest and finally down to the floating turds that were Heath and Haslam & McEwen
 
Has to be Bassett for me, what a ledge. I grew up expecting a decent finish in the top division with power and pace and passion.
Little did I know how good we had it then and how fleeting it would be.
Fortunately some of that is coming back, but bloody hell, how I long for those days again.
 
I'm a little ignorant about Harris in terms of how much cash he had to spend. What Bassett achieved on his budget was miraculous however. Consecutive promotions and 4 years in the top flight, 5th and 6th Rd FA cup runs as lower league, plus a semi final as a top flight team. Multiple wins v Liverpool and Man U, plus creditable draws with the dominant Arsenal side of the time. A great time to be a Blade
 
If this debate were held at any of the other clubs (apart from Alehouse Wimbledon) managed by Diplodocus Dave, he wouldn't get a mention. Just a little perspective on the great man.
