For me, that was the best opening day performance since Spackman's Blades, with Vas Borbokis, beat Sunderland 2-0 in, er, whenever that was.

2-1 v ManU on the first day of the Premier League was pretty good too (though I remember the result more than the performance).

1997 is the year you are looking for.

2005 against the scousers wasn't bad TBF

West Brom away. We had just gone up from the third div. and I think we won 3-0. We were all surprised and we went up that year, it was 1880 something under Bassett and like all teams in those days we played in black and white on grey grass.

I can remember that. I must be older than i thought. Who am i kidding, i can't really remember it. I can almost very nearly remember it. At best. Did Alan Roberts score? Or was that another year, team, time and location?

that match was just awesome.

does anyone know what vas is upto these days?

Best since 4-1 v Leicester in 2005. Also live on Sky. We went up.
I think the odds on us getting promoted must have tumbled after tonight.
very impressive stuff.

Was the 2-0 Sunderland not under Kendall ?

Steady on chaps, we beat a poor 10 man Notts County 2-1. Nothing to write home about, and certainly nothing to get carried away by.

Agana (2) and Deane were the scorers in the 3-0 win at WBA in August 1989. Roberts did play in that match but it wasnt long before he went to Lincoln

What was good about this is that we played well, it shows what we can do and it is a lot better than last year. Whether we can do as well as last year or better, is all about consistency and for that we will have to wait at least another 10 games. Then we may have some idea whether we are going to compete or just hang about.

That Leicester performance actually wasn't that impressive. A Gray pen put us 1-0 late in the 1st half, but in the second half it was all Leicester and they eventually equalised and looked good for another one. However, we got a fortitous pen with about 10 mins left which Kabba scored (Gray had been subbed and was sold to Sunderland a couple of days later). Leicester then gave up and a couple of late goals from Ifill and Bromby gave us a very flattering 4-1 win.

I remember us talking about that a few months back, I'm sure one of us put it on here somewhere!

It probably quickly dropped off the front page of posts after a surge of critical messages about the club took over all attention...

Regarding the opening games of the season, has anybody playing in more very first games (i.e. early kick-offs) than the Blades?

The best result then if not the performance.
4-1, in a higher division and against eleven men.
Neither do I believe that teams just "give up" when only 2-1 down in the opening game live on telly. We earned a good win.

Roger Nilsen was coach at Stavangar

Tri Dellas and Vas Borbokis at AEK

Alex Sabella coaching Argentine national team

Jostein Flo director of football at Strømsgodset

Our foreign contingent seem to generally go on to decent things
