I'm sure we had a thread long these lines back when it was all fields around here but I can't find it now.

Who would you say the best manager of your time was (is?) and why?

Steve Thompson did wonders with what he was left with. Bassett did well with limited funds in his successive promotions in what was a turbulent time for United and no doubt cemented our place as a second tier club.

However, the best of United I've seen is what Neil Warnock provided. Languishing at the bottom of the first division when he took over to near Premiership survival as he left... with FA and League Cup Semi-Finals and a trip to Cardiff along the way. He wheeled and dealed to create a team who wanted to play for him, and surely that is the measure of a good manager?

I'm sure some of you older 'uns will educate us further :)

Not sure............... F1oppo has to be in wi a shout.........:D

on a more serious note are PM confidential on here ?

Best Blades team i've seen late sixties early seventies so has to be John Harris and he worked wi thirty bob.....................

What about PM's on here Linz ? are they confidential ?

Best manager by far was John Harris......a proper football manager!

He bought TC for god sake......and we saw the best football in my lifetime.

*"**@% hell we agree...........................................

Well it wasn't Martin Peters ......

Tough call between St David of Bassett and St Neil of Warnock during my lifetime. Times are obviously a lot different now, but St David just sneaks it.

He couldn't halt the slide to Division Three (still the only manager to have managed two sides relegated from the same division in the same season, I believe), but two consecutive promotions, and three years of safety, despite that awful first start, before a cruel, cruel relegation, was something that at only 3 or 4 years before he turned up we could only have dreamed about.

Only in his last four months, when he was a beaten man, did people question him really.

St Neil had the expectations of what St David did when he arrived, and that was probably the monkey on his back for ages. He achieved promotion probably against greater odds, but I still think St David shades it.

Even if he became Weeds scum.

Kendel for half a season.
We were unbeatable when he came to us.
Also most of the playing and coaching staff were in Nap's every other night pissed as farts! :D

Warnock all the way for me, for the reasons linz provided :)

It has to be warnock for me too, for exactly the reasons that linz has given. You cant knock the acheivements(sp) of said Mr Bassett but unfortunately the following sentance is the reason that i cant give him my vote

Even if he became Weeds scum.

The fist names I thought of when I saw the thread title was Bassett and Warnock, then I thought of Kendell.
Linz mentioned Thompson, yeah I did good too, then I thought of Spackman, he did well, before he had to sell his strike force.

But its down to the first two I thought of, Bassett or Warnock.
Bassett was the gaffer when I first started following The Blades...
(Im from Huddersfield, and yeah, I started out as a glory supporter, but I could have gone for who everyone else was following).
Or Warnock, who gave us the best times since Bassett.

Its close but I reckon it'll have to be Warnock for me.
Full of pride and expected the same from everyone else, and most of the time gave me pride in who I support.

I think hindsight proves you've picked the wrong team lovey :D
