What's your best line up?

For me

Howard
Bray/Jay/Bash/Harris
Flynn/Doyle/Coutts/Murph
Done Sparky.

Howard
Brayford/Jay/Basham/Harris
Flynn/Scougs/Coutts/Murphy
Done Adams.

Howard
Brayford Jay Bash Harris
Baxter
Coutts Scougall Reed Murph
Mcnulty

Against Tottenham when Baxter dropped into defensive midfield he was one of our best players. Doyle is a battler but Baxter offers so much more, like Scholes in his final years he was never known for his tackling/ pace but he was great in this position with his range of passing and eye for a goal.

I haven't put Done in the team as I know nothing about him, if he impresses me I would have him instead of McNulty. I agree with Clough McNulty isn't consistent enough at the moment and has looked better coming off the bench. Coutts and Brayford had a great relationship together on the right for Derby with Coutts covering Brayford's bombing runs.

I don't agree with the 4-4-2 shouts.

Tough one but I think Adams has done enough to make that left wing spot his own. He has the build and attributes of Oxlade-Chamberlain to me. Murphy also looked so composed and natural in a CF position.

Howard
Brayford McEveley Basham Harris
Doyle
Done Reed Coutts Adams
Murphy

Subs: McNulty, Scougall, Baxter, Freeman, Turner, Flynn, Campbell-Ryce

I reckon we've got two.

Howard
Brayford Basham McEveley Harris
Reed
Coutts Scougall
JCR----------------------------Murphy
McNulty

Howard
Brayford Basham McEveley Harris
Flynn---Coutts--Scougall---Murphy
Done McNulty

Looking forward to this my first game since Barnsley

Can't remember the last time I saw us play well though

---------------------------------------Howard-----------------------------------------------
-------------Kennedy------------Basham------------------McEvely-----------------
Brayford--------------Reed------------------Scougall-----------------Harris/Freeman
--------------Adams------------------------------------------Murphy---------------------
------------------------------------Done/McNulty------------------------------------------

Subs:
Turner
Coutts (for Reed/Scougall)
Harris/Freeman
Doyle/Flynn
1 x CB
Done/McNulty

This gives loads of options in the Brayford/Reed/Adams and Scougall/Harris/Murphy areas and doesn't leave the frontman up on his own and has options to switch to other formations like 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 to defend a lead without much trouble

pommpey

GK: Howard - although Turner has proven himself a decent backup

RB: Brayford - cult hero. You don't spend £1m on a right back in League one and then not play him!
CB: Basham - came badged as a central midfielder but much like Jagielka before him he looks far more comfortable at centre half
CB: McEveley - gives his all every game. My only reservation is the occasional rush of blood (cf Plymouth at home, Tottenham away)
LB: Harris - quietly one of our best players this season and IMHO should be up there for player of the season

RM: Flynn - combined well with Brayford as his defensive diligence lets the full back overlap
CDM: Coutts - I think this is the role which Wallace was earmarked for but injuries have put paid to that
CM: Reed - the smallest man any League One side has ever been built around but that is exactly what we should do
CAM: Scougall/Baxter - depending on opposition. Scougall is more energetic but easier to bundle off the ball; Baxter is technically better.
LM: Murphy - probably ties with Reed for first name on the teamsheet. He'll win us more points than any other player between now and May

CF: Done - 14 goals already this season says it all.

Backups
GK: Turner - see above
RB: Flynn
CB: Kennedy - might well dislodge McEveley before the season is out
LB: Freeman
RM: Campbell-Ryce
CDM: Doyle - harsh though it may seem, I think it's time to look to the future though Doyle will still have a big part to play.
CAM: Holt - I don't know anything about him but if Forest were prepared to spend £750k on him then there should be something about him
CM: Cuvelier - the forgotten man. A short loan spell might do him good
LM: Adams - let's not put too much on him but he does look class
CF: McNulty - looks the part when he's fresher, I don't think he's ready to start a run of games at this stage
CF: Higdon - plan B. If only the fans and the opposition defenders would get off his back

Should go on loan:
Dimaio - with the number of CMs in front of him a loan spell might do him good
De Girolamo - think he's burned his bridges
Willis - goalkeepers need to play
Khan - at a higher level than Matlock Town
K Wallace - can't see how he'll get in the team now although I appreciate that he's only here until June
McGahey - with a recall clause
Cuvelier - to get his match fitness back

Surplus to requirements:
Collins, Long (currently on loan), Davies (harsh but IMHO he's third choice right winger), Alcock (ditto but right back)

Just perusing the comments and teams that posters are suggesting above, we certainly have more strength in depth for the first time in a long time. Got to be a good thing, what with injuries, possible suspensions, loss of form. Will give each player the message that they better deliver or else there's another player who'll happily take their place. Good business all round, and I can't help but mention the return of Brayford, great signing and in time the price will be seen as a superb bit of business for us.

There's also young Holt to assess, so plenty to look forward to. Yes, a strengthened forward line would be welcome, but I suggest when doubts begin to rise, we beat 'mighty' Swindon with an unfamiliar team, kept a clean sheet, and Murphy stepped up to the plate and swept their defence to one side.

I have no idea what our best line up is now.

I just know Brayford starts in it.

I assume you're joking about Adams?

Interesting selection. Strongest bench in League One history?

Howard
Brayford Basham McEverley Harris
JCR Reed Scougall Murphy
Baxter
McNulty

Subject to change as the likes of Coutts, Adams and Done try to force their way in. I certainly think McNulty is replaceable, just not by Higdon

Joking? Not at all. Against Swindon he looked strong and fast, creative and threatening. It also meant Murphy could go central and he was clinical. Where's the joke?

Whilst I thought he looked reasonable on the ball, his positional play was poor at best in my view.

When we had the ball he was, sometimes, not at all sure as to where he should be running so as to make space, receive the ball. When they had the ball he seemed completely unaware (especially first half) that he might have some defensive responsibilities.
I see him very much a work in progress rather than an immediate first teamer (I think he typifies having come through none league rather than the academy). Plenty to actually work with though.

Id like to see Adams get a game or two up front. Real shame that he's not eligible for the FA Cup or it would have been an ideal scenario to try this out.

I get where Grecian2000 is coming from, I don't think its right to say Adams has made any spot his own after only a handful or appearances in varying circumstances. But he certainly has the potential to do that, and soon I think.

I think Balham Blade probably got it about right. Horses for courses and a bit of jigging around for some games in midfield and up front, loans might change it a bit, but not much. And all those sticking Done out wide, I don't think so. He got his goals this season mainly up front and that is where he will play.

I would try:-

Howard
Brayford Basham McEveley Harris
Reed Doyle
Murphy Scougall Adams
Done

I'm a fan of Freeman, Baxter, JCR and McNulty and am trying hard to think how we can include them all. That's before we consider Alcock, Flynn, Coutts etc. We do have good depth.

Howard
Sir John Tel Bash Bobby

Reed Coutts

Murphy Jose-Baby Adams - Give him a run of games

Done

Howard Brayford Basham Kennedy Harris Doyle Coutts Reed Done Diego(hope we dont give up on him) Murphy. (Subs) Turner, McEveley, Scougall, Baxter, Ryce, Adams, McNulty. Such a vast amount of options now we dont really have a best 11 we will probably look to get a fresh team out there every game. Regardless of who you think our strongest 11 there is going to be a lot of first teamers out of the matchday squad.

I've tried picking my best team about 10 times now and I've come to the conclusion that a) I don't need to and b) I cant.

Dont think we need a 'best team', as I think as many have said we'll pick a team for each game as it comes.

The variety of combinations for midfield/attack is exciting though. Usually I have an ideal line up that I feel comfortable seeing named, however at the moment he could pick any number of combinations and Id be more than happy.

The keeper and defence is the only part I pick the same 5 each time (Howard, Brayford, Basham, McEv and Harris)
