Rooney for man u in Prem at lane. By far the best performance I've ever seen. He was absolutely Everette everywhereand scored both goals.

One of the best individual performances I have ever seen against us was Steve Kabba for Grimsby. He absolutely tore us to pieces and got an ovation from all round the ground when he went off.

Was so good we bought him. Victor Kiam style.

I've watched United since 1965 and seen some fantastic players but in my opinion the greatest was George Best.

Just for a bit of fun, who are the best ever players you’ve seen play against Sheffield United in the flesh?
To be unbiased, I’ve based mine on the most honours/trophies won at International, European and Domestic club level.
I’ve excluded players who were well past their best when I saw them (e.g. Thompson for us, Moore and Best for Fulham)
I’ve only seen us play in the top flight for 5 seasons and I don’t get to many away matches, so that reduces the choice a bit further.

So based on the above criteria, here is my team:-

Schmeichel
G.Neville, Mascherano, Carvalho, Irwin
Ronaldo, Ballack, Fabregas, Robben
Henry, Bergkamp

Subs:- Grobbelaar, R.Ferdinand, Viera, Scholes, Giggs, Rush, Tevez

Any other suggestions, changes, improvements?

Johnny Haynes , John Collins , Fulham

Stan Bowles QPR.

Colin Bell Man City.

Don't know we're they would line up but sheer class.

Bobby Moore in the late-1960s.

Although I always thought he raised his game for internationals, he had an aura about him, even in club games, that set him apart.

And, agreeing with Bert, Jimmy Greaves. He scored for Spurs at the Kop end in February, 1968, the night Tony Currie made his debut. Rifled it in through a crowded penalty area, turned away and strolled back upfield as if it was the most routine thing in the world.

George Best was brilliant against us at Bramall Lane in September, 1972. Manchester United were in decline and even he was slightly past his peak but he played us on his own that day. I have a vague memory that Steve Goulding was marking him. If he was, it was as big a mismatch as Brian London taking on Muhammed Ali in 1966.

George Best playing for Man Utd at the Lane, my first United game.

Gazza played for Spurs but was anonymous.

Rooney didn't do much when he was here.

Ronaldo an all-time great...miss.

(Never thought much of Cantona - despite that goal.)

Best individual performance Steve Conroy in the 1-0 win against Liverpool. Can't think of anything similar against us.

Reminds me Kenny Dalglish - another one didn't do much.

WHF .was that first game you saw a night match against Man U . ManU played in all blue.

Steve Bull, what a goal machine he was in his prime!

Daniel Passarella was pretty good

Cantona was probably another top 3

Henry?

Best player I've seen live would be George Best, although I don't remember him doing anything particularly special at Bramall Lane.

Not exactly a footballing luminary, but I remember Obafemi Martins looking shit hot for Newcastle at the Lane in the Premier League season. Strong as an ox and pretty quick and skilful. I think he might have scored against us as well.

A Chorus of "Fuck Off Cantona, Say Fuck Off Cantona..." for 80-odd minutes, then THAT goal.......brilliant.

Malcolm McDonald for Arsenal. I think he scored 4? Awesome.

That tiny CMF for peterborough this season - BOSSED the game

Adams wouldn't have got double points with that side.

Having cancelled Sky Sports last summer, I was able to avoid watching last night's game. I made the mistake of listening to it on the radio but had the consolation that I could have a browse through YouTube while I did and I came across a couple of compilations that illustrate my comments earlier on this thread.

This one contains, between 0.35 and 1.03, a goal past Ron Springett followed by my favourite ever goal "celebration". Also, at 1.55, how to deal with an aggressive opponent:

And this has many examples of simply effortless finishing. The goal between 2.48 and 2.59 is particularly good:

The peerless Jimmy Greaves.
Left footed, but if it came on his right foot it still ended up in the same place

Sam Morsy - absolutely bossed the game every time we played Chesterfield. He was that good, he bossed the game even when we beat them.

Christian Eriksen - looked very good for Spurs when we were in the League Cup semi final during the dark days under Clough.

*only one of these statements is serious.

Paul Scholes at the Lane in the 2006/07 season he was absolutely sensational that day, I don't think a Blades player got near him all afternoon. It was proof for me of what makes the great midfielders be great - being able to always find space and time on the ball.

Funny how we all see things differently but I was at WHL when Spurs beat us 4-0 (I think) Paul Walsh hat trick but all people talked about after the game was how outstanding Gazza was, at the time I thought exactly the same, the other that springs to mind is as already mentioned a few times, Cantona at Bramall Lane.

What he said about seagulls was so obvious what he meant, yet the whole world was going on about it, like it was some kind of undecipherable code. Drove me crazy that.
The whole world was going on about it because he was the only footballer whose interviews didn't consist of "Well, I've got the ball in, like, a good place, like, to, know what I mean, like, have a shot, like, know what I mean, like.":D

Yeah but to be fair, Cantona is mainly the legend he is for the collar up thing. If his shirt didn't have a collar, he'd just be some French bloke who could play a bit. Like Zidane.
Cantona is mainly the legend he is for this :D
