Just for a bit of fun, who are the best ever players you’ve seen play against Sheffield United in the flesh?
To be unbiased, I’ve based mine on the most honours/trophies won at International, European and Domestic club level.
I’ve excluded players who were well past their best when I saw them (e.g. Thompson for us, Moore and Best for Fulham)
I’ve only seen us play in the top flight for 5 seasons and I don’t get to many away matches, so that reduces the choice a bit further.

So based on the above criteria, here is my team:-

Schmeichel
G.Neville, Mascherano, Carvalho, Irwin
Ronaldo, Ballack, Fabregas, Robben
Henry, Bergkamp

Subs:- Grobbelaar, R.Ferdinand, Viera, Scholes, Giggs, Rush, Tevez

Any other suggestions, changes, improvements?

You've chosen a few cheating bastards there Sothers! Good footballers though.

Most impressed ive ever been by an opposition player was micheal bridges
First for sunlan as a 16 yr old and then later in his career when he tore steve bruce a new ring piece , think he would have gone on to be the real deal if not for injury his movement and intelligence off the ball was like nothing ive seen before or since
OTher notarys are peter Shilton for derby ( anyone who was there will know why )
Tevez , rooney and gary parker

Jimmy Greaves, the greatest British goalscorer that has ever lived.

I think the best team performance was the 0-5 pasting by Arsenal in Jan 72.

Every time we got near the ball, they took it off us, and then basically passed it about, up the pitch and into the net.

I think at 0-5 they felt sorry for us and stopped. Only for Alan Ball to do what he did to Tony Currie.

30 thousand there as well

Never really thought about opposition players. Giggs or Griggs, it's all the same to me. Can't ever remember admiring a player from a team we're playing. Most of the superstars usually don't do anything against us anyway, We have a strange knack of nullifying them. I remember Gazzacoigne doing the sum of sweet eff all against us. Even this season, nobody for Man U did owt. Then we make 3rd division nobodies look like Pele.

Scholsey just missed out in being my best midfielder due to me been left footed so Giggsy got it, sorry Paul. :)

Surely Steven Gerrard, for his spectacular dive when Chris Morgan came within three feet of him.

Sorry, my technical incompetence failed me in my attempts to edit previous post to include this picture of three of my favourite ever players.

Great contribution mate

The elephant in the room here is if we are talking about best individual performance against us a certain Porkster at Wembley springs to mind.

I can't say anymore as the day is too painful to remember.

George Best playing for Man Utd at the Lane, my first United game.

Gazza played for Spurs but was anonymous.

Rooney didn't do much when he was here.

Ronaldo an all-time great...miss.

(Never thought much of Cantona - despite that goal.)

Best individual performance Steve Conroy in the 1-0 win against Liverpool. Can't think of anything similar against us.

Reminds me Kenny Dalglish - another one didn't do much.

Yeah but to be fair, Cantona is mainly the legend he is for the collar up thing. If his shirt didn't have a collar, he'd just be some French bloke who could play a bit. Like Zidane.

so many , bobby charlton george best alan ball bobby moore, cantona , bergkamp worthington , dalglaish keegan shearer callaghan marsh lee mckay bremner lineker mortimer kendall geoff hurst
le tissier souness stan bowles beckham scholes keane beardsley
Adams Bould brady steve bull,

each to their own but for me, the best player i've ever seen technically and impact on games.
PLUS fucked the pigs off.

transcripts of his interviews would make interesting reading.... when ze seagulls follow ze trawler..

Fairy nuff.

Big fish in a small pond for me.

Never did much in Europe.

I think Zidane was at Juventus about the same time showing what he could do.

The seagulls stuff was just a fishy analogy for the press feeding on scraps from the players n'est-ce pas?

Definitely an individual, and I had some sort of gobsmacked awestruck admiration(?) when I saw the photo of him karate kicking that bloke in the crowd.

But never did it for me as a player.

Rooney didn't do much at all the time he played at The Lane...... apart from score twice

Would have loved to see Zidane play, but was lucky enough to see cantona a few times, and each time he ruled the game by what seemed like force of personality.

All this from someone who thinks Sammon influences our games.

Cantona or Sammon?
