was at that game. stood at bottom of terrace wi me mate collecting all 10 bob bits the cockney cants were cobbingSorry just seen I put about partnerships in my post and it’s about best debuts anyway another great debut Steve Neville away at Millwall 2 goals and I was convinced we had signed the new Kevin Keegan think we won 4-1 ?
I can't steal yesterday's Match Of The Day podcast 'Best Ballon D'or winner' for obvious reasons!
So what was the best debut performance you've seen from a United player?
There are three from the same match, United against Sunderland in 1997. Vas Borbokis showed what a class player he was on the right hand side. When Wayne Quinn was announced in the side, I thought what is Spackman playing at'. By the end of the game I was thinking 'what a player we've got!'. For me, that game was Brian Deane's greatest performance for us (OK, it was his second debut for us). He was so powerful, and impossible to get the ball off.
Other debuts that are memorable, Mel Rees debut (I think) was against Liverpool. Simon Tracey was out and I remember thinking we would get well beaten, we won and Rees made 3 or 4 superb saves.
David Frain I remember (also against Sunderland in the 80s) being so good that I predicted he would play for England one day. Sadly he didn't repeat that performance again.
Finally I remember the first time I saw Peter Hetherston, against Barnsley in 1988. He was brilliant but unfortunately hit the woodwork about three times. We won with a last minute goal.
Hate to say it, but I will. Terry Curran played pretty well in the FA Cup replay at Stoke in January 1983.![]()
Stoke game was a 3-1 win in August 1985. Porterfield shocked fans by dropping Edwards for the first few games.Dean Hammond at meat pie counter...bloody unstoppable.
Mel Rees for me v Liverpool, just pure class,
Another controversial one, Peter Withe at Stoke..86-87ish I think...went to that, the old Victoria ground, bagged a couple in a blades win.

Ah cheers mate, was slighly unsure, when game had finished, i came out the gorung but had forgotten where I had parked it.....did the the same at tesco's yesterday...Withe didn't score in that game. Colin Morris (2) and Glenn Cockerill scored.
Memory serves me right his 4-1 home defeat by leeds in cup ( after beating Liverpool in round before) was a shocker and he continued to have them after thatDidn’t Nicky Johns have a great debut then a series of shockers? Or did he start with a shocker and carry on with more?
Played only 2 games for us. 3-2 win against Sunderland (at fault for 1st goal) and v L**dsMemory serves me right his 4-1 home defeat by leeds in cup ( after beating Liverpool in round before) was a shocker and he continued to have them after that
but after we got rid he was very good for Charlton
Paul Furlong back in about 2002, scored two on his debut on loan then got injured shortly after and disappeared.
His late penalty won it at 4 3 .Paul Furlong back in about 2002, scored two on his debut on loan then got injured shortly after and disappeared.
He played in a few games in 75-76 before Halifax.Chris Guthrie's debut was a false dawn if ever there was one.
A hat trick on debut away to Halifax in the Cup in 1975 was a low summit that slipped slowly down from there.
His late penalty won it at 4 3 .
Tracey running about like a deranged squirrel, heading it, dropping it, before the eventual goal. That's right, and I think I'm right in saying that the great Robert Prosinecki scored one of Portsmouth's goals that day, after a Tracey mix-up I think.

Peter Crouch stooped to head them ahead after about 2 minutes.
No you are thinking of the QPR game when we were drawing 1-1, he scored a great header but QPR equalised in injury timeDid marcelo come on late against tranmere ? At the lane and score the winner in a 3-2 thriller
