How come you're allowed to say someone looks class after two games, but if you say they haven't looked great you get lambasted for judging too early? Weird world this forum init?
Because it's easy for a quality player to look shit in their first few games. It's not so easy for a shit one to look quality.

What I find weird on this forum is that the higher the price tag the more some so called fans slag the players off after a few games. In Berge they have a new target Oli McBurnie must be a relieved man. Robinson had to be sent out on loan to get him out of the spotlight of the haters and scapegoat hunters. In their small minded thinking worlds any player who costs over £500k should be up there with Messi and Neymar from day one.

We clearly haven't spent a record sum for Berge for him to sit on the bench.

Berge to eventually replace Norwood seems the view of many ,why ? Norwood is the heartbeat of the team and captain when Billys not in. Berge plays a completely different game and would struggle to cover the back 3 like Norwood does ,he struggled to cover Baldock yesterday.May as well say hes going to replace McBurnie. If he was going to be Norwood eventual replacement ,why would he not be doing that now rather than lunny and Besic ?
Many are falling into the usual trap of naming an 11 and a formation for every game. Every game is different and we have to plan for this ,we have also been relatively fortunate with injuries and suspensions. Its a squad game and we will use more players than 'the 11' this season never mind next.

Been debating this myself since yesterday. Personally, I say go for Lunny. He couldn't have done much more in his last few sub appearances and as we know, bagged the winner. Berge looked very shaky to start with but did get better as the game went on with a few decent passes & dribbles in the second half. Out tactics aren't the easiest to come in to, nor is our sheer intensity. Come next season though, he may be a different animal entirely

Probably controversial... but I would play him in the DLPM role ahead of Norwood and have fleck and lunny either side.

FWIW I think he's had a shock about how much more intense and physical the EPL is compared to the Belgian league.

He will need a little time to adjust to the new surroundings and demands.

Thats where he played for norway and Genk

Because thats where hes played his entire career.

Why sign a 20M player and play him in a different position square pegs come to mind

Because that’s the position he is comfortable playing, albeit in a different set up. As I said earlier. Berge has youth and flexibility on his side. You are right in saying he is not ready to replace Norwood now, but he could rotate that position next season if the tactics demanded it.
There are so many permutations for a player with Berge’s skill set and qualities. It’s one of the reasons he’s such a promising good buy.

Pretty sure Berge will be the go to pick from now on, & so he should be, we haven't paid the amount we have for he to have a watching brief from the bench. I could see him playing slightly different roles in the games to come with a view towards our formation for next season. It isn't just the size of his fee though, CWAK obviously see him as the future & having a key role next season. Lunny was is real need of a rest & has looked all the better for it, his goal yesterday was a thing of beauty & his footwork was sublime, although for the first 5 or 10 mins he struggled until he got to the pace of the game. I was also concerned a little by his goal celebration, it was really strange to see one of our group wanting the focus on himself instead of the collective, whether it was just frustration at being out of the team or of greater concern moving forward well I guess we will have to wait & see.

In totally different system. Wilders finds tactics and formations to suit players which is why many say correctly our players wouldnt suit other teams. Berge would not be able to play that role in our system in my opinion ,Wilder will find a role that suits him and his ability and fit a system to him rather than he become as you say a square peg. He was exploited by Bournemouth in the first half yesterday and Baldock had to be on top of his game. i think he could only do Norwoods role if we played 2 in there.

It’s absolute madness to consider that we might upgrade on Norwood next season, which is why we should all section Wilder immediately given that he was drawing up plans to do so as early as last November.

Interesting that it seems we are/were looking for a first choice RCB, wonder if that always was and is Retsos?

What a decision for wilder, Berge needs game time and to get used to our unique system, but after an error in the build up to there goal, showed real quality. But lunny after a few weeks of below performances led to being dropped, but 2 impressive sub appearances, show hes really integral to our system , so who would you choose, id go same start as today and lunny after 60 min
It’s a good headache to have !

I think that’s a distinct possibility. Wilder is fairly clear that he wants to continually improve us – I’m surprised anyone would be surprised by the idea we’d look to upgrade on both positions if the opportunity comes up. He’s fairly ruthless in that respect.

Tough question. It’s not as simple as “Berge played badly, got subbed, Lundstram comes on and scores the winner, easy decision” because that isn’t what happened.

Berge gave the ball away a couple of times through poor passes early on, most notably for the goal. But he’s still settling in, the conditions were bad, and a few passes were going astray from everyone. And he did then work his way into the game and looked good on the ball. Lundstram also looked a bit off it when he came on, though he then also worked his way into it and took his goal very well.

The biggest advantage Lundstram has right now IMO is his link play with Baldock and Basham on the right. That kind of chemistry is developed over time and you can tell that trio on the right with Berge playing are still getting used to each other’s movement.

Right now, I think Lundstram is slightly better for the team, but then if you drop Berge, you interrupt his development with this team and potentially knock his confidence. Although that said the optics for the team if you play Berge when Lundstram came on and got the winner aren't great, even though I said it's not as simple as that.

If I had to put money on it, I’d guess they switch roles in the next game with Lundstram starting and Berge set to come on after 60 mins, either for Lunny or Norwood depending on how the game’s going. Lundstram brings more to the team in that RCM role right now, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing if Wilder shows Berge that he’s going to have to fight for his shirt.

Exactly that.

Berge is building his fitness and adapting to this division, its good that we have this current run of games to get him up to speed.. and that is extremely important...

A lot of things have been said that Lunny has upped his game since Berge arrived and thats true. However, i think its because of the intensity of the position. Lunny (/Mo Besic) and Fleck have worked their nuts off for 20+ games and I think certainly for Lunny that his energy in the early part of the season has been key to our success, Fleck carries less bulk, plays a slightly different game, but the energy levels are also really key.

Getting Berge up to speed and keeping Lunny in top shape will also have another possible outcome, Norwood will need a break too. His role doesn't cover as much ground, but I also think that also using Berge in his role, perhaps later in games initially will also give him chance to recover his legs and mind. Would be nice to see Berge get 90 mins, sit in Norwoods role and bring Lunny on for Norwood.

Norwood has been brilliant this season i'd hate to lose him for any length of time, so if we get the chance to manage his fitness, then all the better

This squad is getting depth now

Berge plays every game for me to the end of the season as he clearly needs games to get up to speed. He's not a right sided midfielder and that clearly is not his long term position.

Agreed but do you drop norwood ? And we cant just be playing players for the sake of it as were a good end of the season away from playing in europe

Hi, I am new here and I am not going to post much, but maybe post some Norwegian news about Berge etc. I do not yet have an english team I support but I follow Norwegian players closely. Here is a news article from Norway after the Bournemouth match on Sunday, with an interview with Berge (you will have to google translate it though) :

Also I have to mention, your club seems like something very special and fresh :) I hope you get to Europe, and I really do think Berge will be a hit, but he will need some time adjusting, not easy upgrading to the PL during January :)

Lundstram looked tired and I'm glad we rested him. Based on what I've seen of Berge in the couple of starts so far I think I have to back Lundstram. Going forward, the potential of Berge is much greater and we should be happy that the run up to January has bought us the luxury of time to settle him in.

I thought in both appearances Berge was struggling to keep up with the pace of the game and a bit lost in our system. Honestly, overall performance, I think if one of our other midfielders played that way we'd be say it was poor including a howler that gave a goal away. But I don't really care about that so long as you can see the signs that he'll be a quality player. There's already been a few occasions where it's looked like there's nothing on for him and then he's surprised me by patiently picking out a good pass. The way he shrugged off a player trying to foul him yesterday was great to see.

Essentially we're picking between huge potential and a player who's got us to fifth in the league. Nobody right now deserves to lose their shirt based on what they've done so far, but it's a balancing act to introduce quality while we try to somehow improve on a team way ahead of expectations.

It's taken McBurnie a long time to start showing what he's about and I would've given him longer. It's a hard league to adjust to and our weird style makes it that much tougher. Keep giving Berge game time where we can and see how it goes.

Start both. Drop Norwood (adjusts tin hat).
Norwood over the last few weeks has regressed, yesterday he only passed backwards. Maybe that's his role and if so, I accept it, but I would play Berge in the centre of the midfield, he looks to have a lot of time on the ball and not sure having a touchline by his side helps him.

Cheers, and welcome. Surprising interview I thought – he appears to think Sheffield is “very Hawaii”, presumably because of the warm climate, while he’s already nicknamed one of his team-mates “meadow buttocks”. Guessing that’s Besic for the number of slide tackles he makes.
