Ben Whiteman

I felt sorry for Whiteman, although he did get some games towards the end of the season. I haven't seen him before in the U21's or anything, however he always seemed to play on the right of a 3 and didn't really suit him. Seems more of a guy to sit in the middle, but could be wrong.

Played in the middle in the U21's final against Huddersfield, much better suited there.

Hope the lad can step up and make a case for himself this season.
Got some good attributes and the experience last season will help, but probably not the one to lead a promotion push at this stage...hope he proves me wrong!

Chance for him to step in now, hoping he'll take his chance. Looks a decent prospect.

I thought Whiteman played well in the first XI last season, it was around the time when Adkins was raving about giving the young 'uns a go, then he subsequently dropped him, after he'd done well and the team were winning! Also been impressed with Whiteman when I've seen him in the U23/U21s, can't quite understand why he hasn't at least been on the bench.

He's the only one of a Basham type midfielder at the club, in fact I'd say he's like Basham except with more bite and a better range of passing. Now Basham's suspended I'd give him a go.

For me, he's nowhere near the level of Basham, and will be a real weak link if played at the moment.

Which if course it isn't, because he doesn't and he hasn't. Other than that, he'd nailed it. :)

Totally agree Basham is Roy Keane and Steven Gerrard all rolled into one that's why we've pissed the third division the last 3 yrs....how could one of our youngsters be anywhere near as good as him

Put your funny back in, idiot.

Don't go off my rating, ask why Wilder thinks Basham is in front of Whiteman.

"Give'emarun, give'emallarun" Pinchy :)

At the risk of repetition upon repetition it is not the function of a professional football club to give anyone a "run", a "chance" or worst of all a "go". That applies to players young or old; black or white; local or distant.

If Tufty thinks Whiteman is the right choice for a particular game, whether as a starter or on the bench; no problem. He should not be picked, however, because he's young or because it's "his turn".

The point here being that Wilder (like me) rates Basham over Whiteman, so therefore must rate Basham up there with Keane and Gerrard.

Now I've read some stupid over inflation of some of our young players' abilities, but this is a new high! :)

Last season when Whiteman was given a chance in the first XI he looked the part, in comparison Basham when played in midfield has generally been very average. Odd exception apart, Basham doesn't stamp his authority on proceedings, doesn't boss the game and generally is just a wall flower in midfield. What I've seen of Whiteman, he does have a bit of bite about him and has a decent range of passing, all the things Basham is generally short of in midfield.

For me, over the past 2 seasons + Basham has generally been a weak line in our midfield.

What utter tosh, Basham is the only midfielder who can get stuck in and let the opposistion know they can't walk through us at will. Good luck to young Whiteman but as been said on this thread before Wilder knows who's best in that role at the club and that's Basham.

Hang on a minute..... Basham has been slaughtered on this forum for being weak in the tackle, not tough enough or basically just not good enough.
All of a sudden he gets sent off and people are on here spouting off he is a great box to box enforcer.

Give us a break... It was two games ago many wanted Fleck next to Coutts instead of Basham.

Well I've always been a bit of a fan ( as much for versatility), though I know he's limited. Which of our players aren't?

The point being missed is that Wilder rates him higher, clearly. And he evidently likes continuity. When we're on such form, any disruption to the current lineup is a blow.

I do think Whiteman is a long a way off and I've no idea what the fuss is about. But that's really another story.

Pinchy I have a question.

How would you like posters to put
, time he a go.... Or any other random expression how should we say it?
I think with Basham out Whiteman should play, whether he is young, old, big, small, academy product, Irish, on loan, or anything else.....

Is this more acceptable?

I agree Alco ,, Basham is the better of the two.
But he is no enforcer, I think you will agree. He is a solid midfielder .... I guess what I am saying is Whiteman is the nearest replacement we have for Basham.
That's all pal....

Many, how many out of 20,000 Blades do you know, with no disrespect intended a 100 or so opinions one way or the other on this forum don't represent the views of all the fans.

Likewise no disrespect but I can only answer to what is put on this forum.

Based on many peoples views on this forum, Basham is no enforcer.

How do you know the views on here don't represent all Blades fans. Do you know them all ?
Some fans rate Basham and some don't. Not all 20,000 Blades are on this forum but they have an opinion one way or another.

Basham is an average player who will always give 100% but we don't really have anyone better in his position which is a tad frustrating, unless one of the youngsters like Whiteman can step up. Lets see who gets the chance but I can't see it being Whiteman due to him not making the bench much this season, the bench is where he'll be at best and the midfield tomorrow will probably be Coutts, Fleck, Duffy and Scouggs with us reverting to an unorthodox 4-4-2 formation.

Been on sufc site ,Whiteman and Brooks are not in the 23s squad today that I think means they are with the first team tomorrow possible game time for both of them.

Ben is not in the line up for the U23s today at Stocksbridge. That could mean he might be in the first team squad for tomorrow's game with Brizzle.

Apologies for duplicated info with the post above that must have been posting as I wrote it. Still, great minds & all that. I just wish that I had one

Good. When we're 3-0 up Gerremon, Gerrembothon. If they've done enough to attract Tufty's attention that's how it should be, not because they have any sort of preference or entitlement.

Just to end the speculation about changes of formation, either Wright or Wilson will play and we'll carry on doing what's working okay.

Interesting the name Reed isn`t touted much anymore. Think his best bet is as Scougalls body double on nights out.

Not surprising Whiteman's not in the U23s squad because he could start tomorrow, but Brooks is only likely to be on the bench so I'd like to think he could play at least 60 minutes today.

To be fair, Keane hasn't played for about 8 years and Gerrard is on his last legs in the final few weeks of he's playing career.

The person probably just forgot to say "as at now".

:D
