Perhaps he should be our next target/signing., we should then go down the head coach route. I think this suits the modern football world whereby the consistancy stays and coaches can come and go. I reckon it would suit us even more as our owners are rarely there to provide help.

I went to uni with Ben, he was captain of the football team in my first two years there. One thing that struck me was that he was a leader & understood the game as well, even at this young age.

Would he get given the same opportunity at the Lane with the ownership / boardroom in its present state? Unlikely.

Probably not. But anyone who cannot see we need a decent ceo is deluded.

Anybody thinking that working for Patrick Cryne , Maurice Watkins would be the same as Woking for the McCabes is deluded At SUFC it's do as I say not as I do. The bloke would be worn out , a mental wreck and utterly defeated after 6 months .

Oh how low doth thou sink United, coverteth thy neighbour Dingle's for feck sake

Ben who?

Seriously is he staff or a player?

Whatever he is he's a no mark.

Barnsley are a shambles of a football club, 5 million in debt and administratively chaotic, believe me, their sudden recent upturn on the pitch is in no way a reflection of Ben Mansfords stewardship.

Not sure about Been Mansford as a target for us, but do agree that we do need a consistency through the role of management and coaching.
Could this happen at the Lane?

I'll try to change the direction of this thread with a remarkable story which actually starts in the 95th minute in November when Barnsley were bottom of the league with 18 points from 20 games and rescued a point with a speculative long shot against us.

Since then they WON 12, Drawn 1 and lost just 2 games, that's 37 points from a possible 45!!. They are now 6th and have earned 19 points out of a possible 21 since their young manager left them for Bristol City, his dad's old club.

Anybody know how they've done it? Looking at the team sheet against us there were just 5 of those 18 players that played yesterday.

Who are Heckinbottom and Wright, their two joint coaches left in charge?

We can slag Barnsley off all we like, but footballing achievements should be learned from and this is on our doorstep. I'll ask a Barnsley pal of mine for the story.

Agree but the irony is our board are looking and learning and constantly learning from their mistakes.

We learnt from Swansea and Southampton and had a long term plan making the whole club from the Academy to the first team play the patient passing game. Hence Weir and Clough.

But then we learnt from Wolves and decided if you want promotion then you have to splash the cash and appoint the best manager with a fantastic cv showing promotions from league 1. Hence Adkins.

On another point many fans complained about a lack of communication from the club. Hence Phipps has given unrivalled levels of communication but even that idea backfired.

I work with a Barnsley season ticket holder and he's said from the beginning of the season that they actually have good young talent and if you let them play then Barnsley are great ( like when they played Everton in the cup) but he said they lack experience and bottle. He said league 1 teams focus on stopping them and then they aren't that good. Also they lack character so when they concede their heads drop due to a lack of confidence. Now he can't believe what's happended to his club.

Agree that was the turning point of their season ,and it shouldn't have been ,we were all over them and had numerous chances to put the game out of sight. They were a poor side up to that goal and I wonder how both sides would have progressed had Freeman done his job and closed Hourihan down.

Or our finishing was better, they were more than guilt edged chances we missed that day. Freeman can't be solely blamed for that result. Lets not forget they missed a penalty as well so there were a lot of factors which ultimately mean no relevance when all most people will remember is the score line, if that.

Don't want to get "poles apart" Sitwell but I think mentioning Freeman was a good point but only part of the problem that day which was one of those occasions when I though "Woops, we might have a bit of a problem here".

I think it was Hammond's second game. He was supposed to be the 'main man' who would lead us by example. There was a dead ball in the 5th minute of extra time and our midfield had been supplemented by Freeman who subbed Done ( wrongly IMO) and joined Coutts, Basham, Ryce, Hammond.

This is from memory but from the dead ball between them those wise midfield men left just Freeman on the edge of the area. Hammond and Basham went right back into the area to compete for the header. Ryce and Coutts predictably who knows where. Nobody thought to man the edge of the area, you know 'Michael Doyle country'. Nobody on the touchline or on the pitch had us organised for the simple header away to the edge of the area. Freeman was at least on the edge but ball watched and got nowhere near the scorer. We played the attack like an Under-11 side would.

As I say, it was a defining moment for me and Hammond has not done the "Doyle role" well enough ever since. Nobody organises the sid ewell and nobody captains the side.

yep , nightmare substitution ,not his first or last that have cost points

My Barnsley pal, who knows his football, reminds me that he had said Barnsley were playing better than their results suggested back in November. He says Johnson had a brain wave, or finally listened to the fans, and started playing two up front. Wignall has limitations and needs the support, then he'll always score goals. They signed Hammill and Aidy White!! "who are far too good for this league". When Johnson left nobody seemed bothered, my pal's still not sure about him!! They've been playing these past few weeks with 5 first teamers missing. Times are good. No secret formula or .rocket science' though!!

Barnsley when on a long losing run and where dire , as bad as we are . Nobody was bothered when Johnson left because they wanted him sacked . There is a commom theme between Johnson and Adkins in that they both think that things will come right and have a positive outlook.

Johnson , Barnsley have used the loan system better than us , which is now paying dividends. Young , hungry , pacey players with a mix of experience is the formula for there success which has a ring of common sense to it.

Barnsley by method or madness have fallen into the Watford way , in that if the coach goes status quo or a betterment is produced , with no real change to tactics , that confuse or piss off the players.

Also the Barnsley players were in it all together with self belief, and believed what the coaching team was telling them . They listened , respected and believed

The problem is we have no manager / coach with any short or long term plan , and a set of disarray players. We also have nobody in the club to step up to the mark from within.

Adkins has a get out of jail card , that I feel 99% of us are blaming the players for our demise.

Let's hope Adkins doesn't leave us in the shit as much as Clough did .

Barnsley will get promoted , but it could easily been us. That's the dig and annoying part of this wasted season.

Just for the record My Lord, Johnson had been on a run of 6 wins and a draw when he left.

My Son has been at their academy last 4 years and this season they introduced a new system and structure to the whole club from first team down to the U9 academy side, each position on the field has a DNA apparently and all players know exactly what is expected from them in that position, they are marked out of 10 for each match, this is fed back and where and what they need to see improve. All figures are churned into a database (Software developed by owners son) and again this is communicated to the lads on a regular basis. They also do this on potential new players and in a presentation they mentioned that they had approached Che before we stepped in...

Emphasis is on a fast passing game and this is where the most obvious difference is when I watch our lot on a Saturday. Johnson was just part of the system and hence why they have brought in the coach for the rest of the season as he knows the "Barnsley way" as they call it, whether it will be a success long term is open to opinion but least they have an identity and a style they wish to play which I think is all we want in reality is to be entertained and have a link to at least a few of the players on the pitch.

Sounds like they have a plan, I wonder if we'll ever come up with a plan in the up and coming years......

Well considering I worked in Shafton for 6 years, played football for 3 in the Barnsley Nelson league you could have fooled me.

Taking kids to play teams in Barnsley for 6 years in SDJFL also proved the point.

As I said - small town in Sheffield - now fuck off

The academy has been working to a plan for a number of years, the problem is harnessing that plan to the first team as we have had a stream of managers who will have a plan, but never get the chance to put it to use due to short term issue. Maybe this time the manager will get the time to harness the academy to his plans.what's for sure is if we sack Adkins the process starts all over again and another year (at least ) is lost,is that what we want? in my opinion !! no.
