January - so many correct decisions to be made it feels?

After the humiliating circumstances of our last top flight efforts, I don’t think many of us are wanting to head back to that all over again. Our new owners however seem to have set this as their target for this season and with where we are in the league this season, paired with the early financial gains as a result, well you can kind of see why can’t you?

But how do we approach business? It has to be done with so much forward insight it is unreal….

The squad is thin and I don’t need to go into the areas that need strengthening, there are a ton of threads addressing this already and I think we all have our thoughts on where we are light.

Sooo we need signings to hopefully aid in remaining competitive between now and may, as well as getting us over the line! But it’s the January window and only 5 months left of the season!?!

Names are being banded around already, Cannon being the latest today. Undoubtedly we are going to be linked with at least half a dozen more as agents tout their players to our new owners in hope they are about to sign the cheques.

But is Cannon the right answer? He’s banged a few in this season granted, but if the ambition is top flight football, doesn’t he have the growth potential to make that step up if we need him to? Surely any permanent signing would entail a couple of years contract?…. It’s a commitment and a squad place filled next year?

So how do we go about business in this window?

- Do we focus heavily on the loans and securing the high quality to carry us over the line? Would that be enough?

- Do we hope to attract the sort of quality that will go on to hold its own in the top flight? Will it be easy to attract this sort of quality until the goods are delivered?

- Are there many players of significant quality who would be open to shorter contracts? With even the view to extending them later…

- Do we go the proven model of the Championships best players? Hoping that we can build a team capable of holding its own for a season in the top flight should we achieve promotion and in full knowledge that we have a top challenging side if we fluff it.

- What sort of contracts do we expect to offering out to new recruits? Do we insert clauses? If so what?

Just because we have new owners and potential money for signings, doesn’t mean we are going to be ruthless and stupid in our spending… or at least I hope not! The long term security of the club is still paramount!

Head scratching….
If we have Wilder as manager it will be Championship players and another terrible season.

If the owners take note of how Premier teams are manager and the calibre of players signed up we would need to take the route of searching for a manager who can take us up another level.

As much as Wilder is a good manager he is in the same bracket as Warnock as he sees graft of skill, technique and composure. He just can’t cut the big league. It’s not just him though. It seems just about every English manager struggles in the Prem and gets replaced with managers from abroad.

You're post is absolute nonsense and I can only assume you are yet another sad pig on the wind up
What a way to spend new years eve

We need to try and lock in a permanent option for Brereton - that's one we can barely go wrong with. He's one who can compete in the PL. As for the rest, we can't focus much beyond simply recruiting players who'll help us go up. We should get the best loans we can and take any good permanent opportunities that pop up, typically around expiring contracts.
Which players who have impressed on loan and when we sign them haven't been underwhelming? Genuine question. I’d say Norwood off the top of my head?

Don't think there have really been too many, have there?

Our loans are usually young players who we won't be able to sign permanently

Ashley Barnes and one other could be under consideration for such roles worked in the past and can work again .The players knowing that at best they would get a short contract with a view to going out in style .
I imagine Barnes would love another crack at it! Norwich don't look like they will be mounting a challenge for the play offs so he should be available ! maybe a small fee or taking over his contract which finishes in the summer .
Better than seeing his contract just peeter out! If he's up for it ! get him in.!
He can't get it a poor Norwich side ffs!

Whichever forward we bring in we need to carefully analyse how we’re going to create opportunities for them and shop accordingly. We’re shit at playing it up to a lone striker, we don’t get the ball forward quickly enough for a pacy, run in behind type player and we don’t create many clear cut chances most games.

It’s a bit of a conundrum really.

Ideally we’ll manage to find a Didzy/Duffy/MGW/Ndiaye type player who is able to create chances for themselves or others because I think signing a striker with the hope that it’s all we need will sadly backfire.

The other issue is that we have a load of injuries and realistically the only players available in our price range will be frees and loans who haven’t played much this season, so anyone is likely to be a gamble. Unless the new owners are looking to fund a spree, but then Wilder is lethal with money in his pocket as we’ve seen already.

Calm down wanky Frank. Bed wetting over a post. Chill dude.

Assuming those being replaced are happy to be squad players, which they generally aren’t.
When you lose players of the calibre of Souttar & Blaster , they need replacing by equivalent quality.
When your strikers start getting injured or out of form , you need healthy competition.
The only way the club can sustain progress is to continually improve its player quality
either by acquiring it or having a young player develop on a steep trajectory like Blaster or for an example in the past , think JoC or Brian Deane.

There is one small group of players who may be ideal. As PL clubs add to their squads this month a few who have been around the first team will need to be offloaded. They are what we need, but are not likely to be available until well into January.

Because I watched him do so for us

He's a good physical specimen who works hard, with enough quality to score and create

Don't think Southampton suits him nearly as well as SUFC
You watched him put himself in the shop window and what?
let’s be reight you can’t base his PL pedigree on last season playing 15/18 games abd he was ok I’m more concerned as to why he’s been pushed out completely at his other recent employers
