Player Suggestion Ben Godfrey

You thought we would be signing Ben Godfrey on a permanent?
I'd have thought we'd be looking at a CB to be brought in on a permanent basis regardless of Anel being sold or not. Apart from Trusty, we've had no permanent CB signing since Anel himself, its piss poor.
2 loans for the same position just isn't good enough.

Loan with an option to buy is perfect imo. See if hes still got it before we commit to him. You'd be mental to sign him permantly now, hes not played consistently for 2-3 years.

No thanks. Don't rate him.

And can we potentially start to look at bringing in a permanent player or two rather than every fuka coming in on loan? I don't have an issue with loan transfers per se, as they have their benefits, but perhaps a mix of the two would be of benefit.... just a thought United.

If he's fit enough, I'd sign him.

Assuming the link is genuine and this might well happen, loan is fine as it would likely be a big fee to sign him permanently.

Yes, he's been poor last few years (Everton and Ipswich, not sure how he got on at Atalanta), but even us Blades know just how big that gap is between bottom of PL and top of the Championship.

It's a big step down in terms of ability and levels of performance, something that he should be more than capable of doing.

Plus, let's say we do sign this Nils Zatterstrom on a permanent deal as well (surely we wouldn't be linked with him if he wouldn't be eligible), Godfrey, Bindon and Nils Z as options for CB would solve our issues in that position.

Plus Godfrey can play RB as well, covering 2 positions with just 1 player.

Must admit, no issue with Godfrey. Been out of his depth for a while but could be a good pick.

My issue however is that seems to go against club new transfer policy and feels more of a hecky/wilder type signing. Big name rather than big potential so a bit disappointed unless someone with the right profile is brought in as well

He reminds me of Mason Holgate the lad who we had on loan in the PL relegation season. Very limited player who was on a ridiculous wage compared to on the pitch output and ability.

I'm sure Godfrey will do a reasonable job for us if he was to come in, but im not convinced hes the best we could have attracted. Still, if Ruben wants him then so be it.... personally id have gone in for Mepham and maybe pushed the boat out for Charlie Hughes at Hull if possible.

Not taking into account the money for Souza, if we had to pay 8 or 9 million for a young lad with loads of potential who could be our main man at the back for a good few years, it's probably wirth it and it could have been financed with the Anel and Moore fees incoming fees. If the other incoming this summer have to be loans to help finance this onr permanent then so be it, at least we wpuld then have brought in a main player on a permanent for the future.

i can see by your posts weasel that you dont rate godfrey but for me hes twice the defender holgate is and a lot more classy i think this could be a great signing for us although his salary would seem to rule us out fingers crossed though 🤞

What’s that? 2 starters at £25m each and 2 back ups at £10m each?

Yeah, that’s exactly what we’d be doing 🤣
So how much, when we get promoted, would it cost your genius to sign 4 CBs who are ready for the Premier League.

Won promotion with Norwich. Signed by Everton for £20M. Won young player of the year. Played 80 odd games for them, quite a few at right back.

Champions League Atalanta bought him for £11M with 12 months left on his contact.

You guys do know our current centre backs are Robbo, RND and a kid who has never played at this level....right?

Also played for England.

Played a handful of times for Atalanta, and even less for Ipswich, despite being able to cover two positions and them not being able to keep clean sheets. He was good when he was young at Norwich but has been in decline since. Mason Holgate mk2 (but I’d rather have Holgate!). There are so many better (and cheaper) options out there that I really hope this one’s a no go.

Do we think this is the CB/RB Ruben was on about ?
If taking this lad frees up the funds for Hughes, that'll do for me

Depends how you look at it. Selling one of your better players and best defender for 7m replacing with a loan isn't great... (hopefully we don't)

I'm happy for us to have 5 loan players in the squad but two CBs on loan isn't ideal when next summer we'll have 0 CBs and permanent defenders that we can develop and maybe reinvest in.
