Not really when you consider some of his past actions. This is exactly the sort of thing you would expect him to do.

BBD and is agency will be fully aware of clubs after him, if this is an attempt to manufacture a bidding war or pressure us to sign terms that we’ve not been willing to sign the only thing BBD and his team can do is a sort of self sabotage and call bluff, by saying i don’t want to go anywhere else other than United to try and counter the dicking about Southampton are doing. Our role would then be to make statements like “we’ve got other targets to pursue”. It’s all a game of chicken.

Four scenarios

BBD forces Southampton to change their terms based on player welfare and he joins but late in the window. Which is what he wants due to family locality and previous affiliation with club.
