Being Instantly proved wrong at a game

Peschisolido at home from outside the box, the opposition escapes me, Norwich maybe.

I shouted, 'not from fucking there' just before it sailed in.

On a slightly different note, I once climbed the white railings at the far end of the West Terrace to goad Liverpool fans after scoring in the early 90s. After celebrating for an age I was dragged down by a copper only to find the goal had been disallowed.

Two seconds later I was instantly proved wrong. Similarly in the 1984 last minute win at Rotherham, as the ball was played to Bob Atkins on the edge of the box with his back to goal my dad said "don't give to him, hes hopeless".

In one glorious movement, Bob then turned and placed the ball unerringly in the top corner.

Anyone else been proved wrong like that?
Unforgettable that game, Rotherham looked like going down and did all they could to stop any football being played. The pitch hadn't seen water for weeks and was like concrete, goal kicks bounced higher than the main stand, we'd already had a goal disallowed just when it seemed nothing was going for us bang 3 sides of Millmoor erupted. Rotherham did manage to survive even though we took the 3pts towards promotion.

Going to an early round League cup game versus Stockport in the 1990s, and saying to the guy next to me "it's only Stockport this will be a comfortable win".

30 odd minutes later and losing 0v3!

The best actual example was Flo's header at Anfield. None of us knew it had gone in till he wheeled away and started celebrating

Stood next to my brother on the Kop, I claimed ‘He’s going to be class’ after Jordan Slew had tidily finished against Brentford…

Maybe not instantly being proven wrong, but an example of instantly making a comment that later proved to be moronic…

Michael Twiss. Anyone remember him?

We had him on loan from Man Utd - another one of those world beating potential signings that ended up in the Conference.

Warnock brought him on in one of the Christmas fixtures - Preston I think. I remember saying to Happy Hippie (RIP) "What's he brought that useless idiot on for?".
One touch later from about thirty yards out and the ball was in the Shoreham net. Absolutely worldie.

He went on to a great career with Morcambe.

Twist came on loan under Bruce, using his fantastic relationship with Ferguson. We all eagerly anticipated a world beater.

Is that not maybe James Thomas?

I remember him being very poor but scoring a good winner in a comeback from 0-2 to beat Preston 3-2.

Twiss did score the winner against Huddersfield in December 1998, his only Blades goal. Unfortunately I don't think the club did a season review video for that year so it might be lost media. From memory Marcelo missed a penalty (put it wide) and our other goal was an OG, but I can't picture Twiss' goal at all so will just take SheepdipBlade's word for it!

James Thomas v Preston was a year or two later.

I think between the three of us, we have a good idea of what happened...

I would have sworn up and down that Thomas was also a Manchester United loanee too, incidentally, but I just checked and he came from Blackburn.

I was on the BL end, he scored at the kop end and from memory he looked like he was on the goalline (but its possible he was 6 yards out) - was from a cross or maybe a corner.

Saying given time Luke Thomas could be the missing piece we needed on the left of our defence about 2 mins before he lost an uncontested drop ball and never looked back....

Turns out my new boss is a friend of the family and apparently he didn't even know he was getting loaned out to us. He was expecting League One/Championship and ended up by his own admission out of his depth....

Can't remember the game, but it was at home in the Warnock years when we had Jack Lester.
Lester came on as a late second half sub, and was utter gash, with balls bouncing off him and him also tripping over himself.
He then scored a lovely one on one at the Kop end to win us the game.

In his post-match interview, Warnock (who I think was in the stands serving a ban), said he was on the phone to McCall, just before Lester scored, saying, "Tell Lester if he carries on, he'll be subbed back off, and tell him that was a right goal."

Remember Devlin once scoring from about 25y out at the Bramall Lane end. Think it was against Birmingham... he was running through the middle at the retreating defence and then nudged the ball right towards the John Street (where I was sat) and I shouted - "he's took it too wide"... then he just banged it in
