Behind closed doors game - Burnley

Glad to see some of the fringe / returning players getting a good test against a PL side.

I presume these games aren't played at full pelt, but delighted to hear Brooks is still doing his stuff.

Must be a fucking nightmare playing against lads like Brooks in matches such as this.

"Right, so that lad Brooks. He's gonna try to take you on... but... and listen closely... we've agreed to not put in any levelers so careful how hard you tackle."

"...'sake"

From the report, Moore, Stearman, Lafferty and Brooks played. You would have expected Carruthers, Thomas and Hanson to have played.
The U23s played the day before and it was claimed on here Slater was held back for the Burnley game and Jake Bennett wasn't involved.
Maybe Donaldson and Lavery got a run?

Would love to have seen Brooks taking Bardsley on - he couldn't defend very well at the best of times, never mind against a tricky young winger in a game where you can't intimidate him. Also good to see that a Premiership team only got back into it when we changed our team.

Burnley aren't much of a Premier team, though, they're only 7th.

Jack Hunt will testify that it is indeed a nightmare to play against Brooks, and he was allowed to tackle, well he tried to tackle, and the rest is .......

Heneghan also. So I would guess at something like:-

__________Moore
_Heneghan Stearman Lafferty
Bennett Carruthers Slater Thomas
_________Brooks
_____Hanson Donaldson

BROOKS SCORED!!!
FUCKING ROLL ON SATDY!!
COYRAWW!!!!

This forum is strange sometimes. This thread just takes it for granted that we know about this but..

Why was there a closed doors game against Burnley with an unknown squad?

Was it an unseen testimonial for Dean Hammond as a tribute to his unseen work?

Because most of the probable team haven't played much football and needed a game.
More than 3 (six) of them are over 23 and therefore they couldn't all play in the same U23 match.
For those who are under 23 it's good experience to play with and against more experienced pros.

So this is quite commonplace then?

A "source close to the club" informed me that we played a few towards the end of last season:-

<< Sheffield United have unveiled plans to hold a series of behind-closed-doors friendlies between now and the end of the season as Chris Wilder’s side attempts to reach the Championship next term. The League One leaders will play undisclosed opponents at the Steelphalt Academy later this week after coaching staff acknowledged some members of their squad could be lacking sharpness following a shortage of game time.

Stefan Scougall, Louis Reed, Chris Hussey and James Wilson are all expected to feature while Leon Clarke, whose campaign has been plagued by ankle issues, is also pencilled in for a role. “There are only so many running sessions you can do,” Wilder said. “These lads want to get out and have a kick of the ball, play some football. “Between now and the end of the season, I’d imagine this is something we’ll do a lot more of. We’re in a good place with the group.” >>

Is this commonplace at a lot of clubs, or just another example of Wilder/Knill ingenuity? Shows good nous if you ask me - can't see the pigs doing owt like that - Carcrash can't even get his squad playing together on matchday, never mind in a nothing match...

Fairly common but as it takes a bit of organising it needs the the two club's mangers to want it to happen. CW has previously mentioned talking to Sean Dyche and obviously it would need to suit Burnley too, who presumably also had players coming back from injury etc.

We've done it before under Warnock and it is always easier if managers have good contacts elsewhere. In all seriousness it is probably harder for Carloss, as he came to the English game without these contacts. Having said that what with SWFC being 'so big' and Ronaldo being their most famous fan, they could probably play Real Madrid at the Bernabeu any time they want.

Good to here the young lads are still in CWs thoughts.

Pleased for Slater, had a little injury and a short match ban so good to see him again.
