Baxter on Saturday

If another club had a Roygbiv scouting fans' opinions on potentially signing Baxter you'd be left more confused than when you started off thinking he was a bit like Zidane and a bit like Pete Doherty with a pair of football boots.

If you're ITK, Alco, could you please tell me how the fuck Sun Jihai knows the team so early on a match day and you're nowhere to be seen?

:D
I'm not ITK about anything interesting that happens, just this incident. :)

Whatever the incident was that led to the suspension, I'd trust Adkins (above ITK posters on here) to the best judge of what destroys team morale and what doesn't.
Agreed. Adkins has made the decision that he's better to play him, that's fair enough. And I suppose the player in questions doesn't care about whether Baxter plays for 90 minutes or not, but I'm sure he'd want him out of the club.

I doubt you've looked at every team selection in your supporting years and thought " hey, the manager knows best", have you?

I was jesting, mate. I heard a few accounts regarding Baxter but I didn't know which one to believe, if any. I couldn't give a shit 'tbh' so long as he keeps trying on the pitch and helps us to achieve our new aim of the playoffs :)

He's the best player in the squad, but needs to be played in his favoured position, have players like Reed to do the work for him and he can play with players like Che and Billy as they're intelligent footballers.

I'd like to see Basham in for Hammond, but its not going to happen, it'll be Basham for Reed or Baxter
If Reedy can play like he did Saturday,I'd keep him in Swiss if we continue with that shape..Bash came on for Reed late on,got the ball in space deep on the right hand side....looked up,had loads of time and plenty of options, and the Donny players didn't close him down, and he passed it straight into touch...That's typical of Bash...it was funny at the time though.

If I worked really hard, stayed fit, didn't drink, dedicated myself to my profession, stayed out of trouble and sat on the bench while Baxter did none of that but was just better than me (if I were Flynn for example), I'd be pissed off too.

I'd still rather watch Baxter than any of our other players though given I have to pay for the privilege :)

Chris Basham - limited and dedicated. It's his epitaph.

He's also 27 and still played fewer than 200 games. Still finding his level I think.

At the risk of going around in circles, I agree with you, to a point.

I don't care if Baxter plays really. I'd play him sometimes and not others. The overriding point is that along with all the rest of the players, he's part of the problem too.

Get rid.

Yes,I'd be looking to move him on,can't fault his attitude, great energy, but lacking in ability.

Yeah, it shows the standard that we're at. Personally i like Reed, but at times he needs that extra experience. I think Adkins will swap Reed for Bash though if he's fit.

Personally i don't rate Hammond and think Basham offers more energy there. Interesting that Keith Edwards was getting pissed off with Hammond for just playing it too simply and only supplying proper ball players like Baxter. He said that Hammond needs to take more responsibility and not just pass the ball off. I'd be inclined to disagree with Edwards on this occasion. I'd rather see the deep lying midfielder play the ball to the creative players and keep that shape.

Agree with you there,it's a bit like the old Hockey/ Currie thing...Cloughy used to say the same thing...Win the ball and give it to the lads who can play, and do more damage...I don't mind Hammond to much to be honest, that's his job for me,to win the ball and give it,along with screening the back line...he's made mistakes but they all have...wouldn't mind seeing Reed given another go alongside and keep the 4231 going as I think we're more suited to it.

The thing for me with Hammond is that he's not done what he was brought in to do - According to Adkins he was to be a leader and an athlete. For me, he's got the fitness for 45-60 mins to play the position he plays. He doesn't just make mistakes, he makes stupid conscious decisions. I certainly don't think he's got another season in him.

However, if he does the job right in protecting the two inadequate centre halves and playing the ball to the creative players (centre mid and wingers). The problem with this is that if the other midfielders are struggling, thats when Hammond would need to step his game up in other areas.

Long was loaned to Oxford as their number one Ryan Clarke was injured. He played 10 games, Clarke returned from injury and Long was dropped, loan cut short and returned to United.

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me Long joined Oxford who had 4 keepers on their books (including their injured first choice). He played ( the fan comments on him were highly critical) until the other guy came back and from that point struggled to even get on their bench. His time at Oxford wasn't a success.

As for Baxter I think its a case of focus on Sheffield United's needs this season as I think we look moribund creatively without him. The pass v Donny was excellent - but they don't happen often enough. Coutts has his good days (mainly since Brayford came back and this has helped him enormously), but also his days when he doesn't seem to fancy it - especially cold wet conditions (first half at Blackpool he was invisible) and his scoring and assists account is poor. Coutts struggles to do more than 70mins anyway so I think his athleticism is as debatable as Baxter's. As someone said Baxter is our marmite.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think Baxter is too good and too clever for our squad. If he went elsewhere he would flourish with a manager and a team that knows how to play him properly

Until we get two players in who can do an all round midfield job then we can probably put up with Hammond doing half a job.

bonkers.

Funny how fans were pretty much united in defending Paddy Kenny when he was banned but not for Jose Baxter, despite JB receiving a much-lighter punishment...

Kenny delivered pretty consistently for 6 years then made a stupid mistake.

Baxter already had form while at Everton (IIRC with drug dealing dodgy mates). He has had the odd decent game and has a great touch but to my mind, generally looks like he can't be arsed. He made a stupid mistake too. Then, 'allegedly' another one just before Christmas.

It is not about the length of the ban. There is no comparison between the two, as Baxter has never even looked like he wants the shirt.

Maybe Paddy could be deemed old enough to know better. Baxter was, what, 16 / 17 years old? And his spiking explanation was officially believed, and you quite rightly put "allegedly" in inverted commas because we don't know any facts about "the other incident". However, unlike Ched who scored goals and Paddy who saved them, Baxter's guilt is assumed and used to beat him with because fans don't rate him.

He might be a troublemaker, have an attitude problem, be fat, be lazy or any of the other things people say about him, but he was the only player that consistently showed some talent on Saturday. Flashes from Che and it was no surprise they combined for the goal.

Baxter covered plenty of ground, got it down to play and with his first touch just created extra space every time. He gave the ball away once and that was possibly a foul.

Whatever people say about Jose, I always prefer it when he's on the team sheet.

100% agree. Baxter is obviously an idiot off the field at times, but he is a class above pretty much everybody else in the squad.

He would play every week for me - in his natural position.
