He doesn't have a "Cockney" accent Brownie. He is not a Cockney.

He has a London accent - a north London one to be precise - which is nothing at all to do with Cockney's.

I agree with most of your other points btw. Although I think Wilder is already streets ahead of him, I really do. As much as I liked Basset, what Wilder is producing is a form of football that is technically clever and very hard to play against. What Basset produced was route 1 football, to suit the players he had in the squad. Both are clever, but one is quite brilliant.
Seeing as you are being so picky I think you will find his surname is Bassett....

When balanced analysis and debate is replaced by exaggeration and hyperbole, that’s when.

And a state of starry-eyed denial about a long-discredited, ugly ‘style’ of ‘football’ that was happily consigned to history’s bin by people who appreciate football. That is to say, the whole world save deepest, darkest S2 where the dinosaurs still roam free. Your Neanderthal ‘barrer’ boy still thinks it’s the way to ‘play’

Vinnie Jones and Wally Fucking Downes, eh?

You really do have an unhealthy relationship with dinosaurs. You mention them in nearly every post. Yet it is you that constantly posts about the past and never the present or the future.

Those posts that don't include any mention of dinosaurs include, zombies, grammar and S2.

A little variety would go a long way, but then again you're just an attention seeker aren't you???

PS, other dinosaurs other than the diplodocus did exist. Rather than constantly use your less than witty catch phrases of, 'alehouse Dave and 'dippy Dave'. Why not try something new?

I didn't have the dubious pleasure of watching Bassett's side, but I do know that the last two managers he recommended to Kevin McCabe were Sean Dyche(when he was at Watford) and Chris Wilder - on two separate occassions. The dinosaur imagery doesn't really fit when looked at in this context.

Not so. He recommended Wally Downes. Wally Fucking Downes.

They are new. I have to work with the material I have got. In S2 that inevitably means dinosaurs and zombies.

I’m not paid for this, you know.

There’s a revisionist view of history perpetuated by certain folks and there are others not worth bothering with. Some like to argue just for the sake of it. The majority responses of those who saw Bassett’s teams was that it was those glory years where on a very little budget he got us out of the fourth into the first division and on the way we were treated to some exciting times.

He told me a room full of people that he recommended Dyche at "An evening with Dave Bassett" at Beighton Miners Welfare. The Wilder quote comes from here: “I pitched him as Sheffield United manager a couple of years before he got, before they appointed Nigel Adkins and Nigel Clough. I’ll glad he’s got it now because he deserves it.”

I'm afraid the word "excitement" isn't allowed in the sterile zone known as Pinchyworld.

While you lot were prancing round the pitch deliriously at Filbert Street in May 1990, Pinchy was sat in his room twiddling with his radio tuner muttering, "rubbish, rubbish, why can't they play proper football!"

(ps Bassett got us up from Div 3 to Div 1 :) )

Still waiting for his input on his Messiahs signing of Gary "Tuftyball " Madine.
Deafening silence.

You'll be waiting a while pal. I'm still waiting to hear who he would have appointed in 1988 and what, on top of double promotions and 4 years in the top flight, victories over Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, Everton, Forest (one of the country's top sides at the time), a double over that lot, cup runs to the 5th, 6th and Semis (at a time when the cup was taken seriously, the former 2 examples as a lower league side), in Deane and Kelly bringing the best 'keeper and striker in a generation to the club for a combined £180k (neither of whom have been bettered since) he thinks his candidate would have acheived.

Lest we forget that this is the font of all knowledge who predicted a succesful turnaround under David Weir, and that Chris Wilder was an unsuitable candidate for the role.

This is the guy who would approach a roulette wheel and put his life savings on orange.

At the time of his appointment, the shortlist was Bassett, Keith Burkinshaw, Ken Brown and Cyril Knowles.

I had, like many of us, a right shit time down at Leicester that day.

Should have done what that ‘character’ pinchy did..

He stayed home and whacked himself senseless over his poster of Johan Cruyff... ‘we should have been playing total football’

When the 5th goal went in the lot went up in his bedroom and he turned his attention to the future, he could see the light in the managerial messiahs Robson and Weir.

‘Save us, save us from ever getting promotion oh great ones’

Well that changes everything. Baller Burkinshaw, the guy who's portait hangs over Guardiola's fireplace? THE Ken Brown, Fergies mentor? The same Cyril Knowles who scouted Messi, Iniesta, Modric and Aguero? As big a sliding doors moment as when we baulked at £400k for Maradona.

Isn’t it enough to say he brought us some good times, but that the game has moved on?

I grew up in North Wales, and like many around me supported Liverpool as a young un. Me Dad (a Blade) would take me to Anfield fairly often.

Not long after Bassett came in, me Dad started to take me to United games. It probably wasn’t as technically proficient as Hansen and co. knocking it about the back for ages, and there was no one of the caliber of John Barnes or Beardsley, it was just much more fun and exciting experiencing Sheff Utd on the up. It was committed, honest, direct, and attacking.

Agana, Deane, Bryson, and Tracey quickly replaced Rush, Beardsley, Grobbelar, and Barnes as my favorite players. And over the next couple of years we had Whitehouse and my absolute favorite, Glyn Hodges (now paired with Wally Downes!). It’s simply not true and unfair to those players to dismiss the team as simply long ball.

Later years, you may have a bit of a case. The game moved on. We lost many of our good players, and often brought in limited replacements, and hoped Nilsson hitting it long for Flo would work. It didn’t, really. Still Bassett brought many of us some of our fondest Blades memories.

Not sure where you get the setting us back 20 years comments are coming from, Pinchy, but I’m sure you’ve enjoyed the number of replies you’ve been getting. Cheers and UTB.

I was there mate. Bassett was a fucking alehouse hoofer.

Wilder hardly played under Diplodocus by the way. He was far too stylish and wanted to pass the ball. Kevin Gage didn’t reckon much to the ‘style’ either. He thinks Tuftyball is light years ahead of Bassett’s shite.

He set us back twenty years.

Bassett played winning football, in 30yrs of following the Blades i've never seen us spend 4 consecutive seasons in the top flight.

Loads of teams played long ball, intimidating tactics in the 1980's/90's, Liverpool & Arsenal included, i recall some great games under Bassett including beating the likes of Man U, Liverpool, Everton, Forest etc, so if you enjoyed watching your team win against teams containing top players of that era, it wasn't such a bad time under Bassett.

I dont get this revision either, I cant talk about bassett as I wasnt alive then but I know the stories & its sort of similar to Warnock era now. do I know now that his style of football wasnt the best yes. but when I remember the great times of that era the cup runs, the derbies or that amazing play off semi final or the great day out at Cardiff (result aside) I wont be saying ah but the football was crap.

As Bassett complained at the time, Arsenal hitting a long ball to Ian Wright was lauded, and John Gannon hitting the same ball to Deano was scoffed at.

Lets not pretend we're football purists, we'd be Forest fans if we were, strivving for past achievements and the Brian Clough dream.

We spent 15yrs talking about TC and Woodward, both greats and should be idolised (before my time though), however i remember Bassett saying on his arrival at the Club all anyone talked about was the 1970's and how great we'd been. Bassett created his own style and memories, and for me should be held in high regard for what he did for the club, not picking apart how great, or not so great, his style was. His style was to win games, which we mostly did from 1988-1993.

Bassett wasn't John Harris, just like Wilder isn't Bassett, or Warnock, but Wilder has done something similar to what Bassett did, he'd dragged with club off its arse when times were looking very down and dark.

I laughed at the story he told about Wimbledon playing against the pigs away and they were all in a Sheffield Hotel

Bassett said that he didn't expect his players to observe any curfew he might insist upon, but he told them that he expected them all to be professional enough to put in a performance the following day.

Bassett strolled into the hotel at 1.00 am to find it very quiet, he asked at reception to see if his players had all gone to bed early, the receptionist said they've gone out on the town and not arrived back yet

The players arrived back at stupid o'clock and then went and beat Wendy 0-2

If that Wednesday game was the last match of the season and my memory serves me right the players put Harry's bed in the lift and it was going up and down for ages.

There certainly is. Well perpetuated.
Go on, there must have been moments when you left your feet & danced around in the 7 or 8 years DB was here

Go on, reminisce, give us a moment in DBs time when you actually smiled ......

I'll give you one of my moments, first appearance at Wembley for over 50 years, watching those Red & White stripes walk out at Wembley .......

Beating spurs (who finished 5th) 6-0 in '93, and it could've been 8 or 9 that night.

...to be left chasing shadows by the Pigs I’m afraid.

I enjoyed a great many occasions under Bassett. QPR, Forest, Pigs, Liverpool and Leicester all spring to mind.

He was, as I’ve said repeatedly, the right man at the right time. His time was up when Deane left. I didn’t like the constant long ball with keepers punting into the box from the half-way line but at least with the legendary Deane and Agana (all too briefly in fact) there were indeed some exhilirating times. Post-Deane the crudeness was exposed. It was pure hoof from then on. Ugly and ineffective.

What I object to is the continuous present day hero-worship, especially when John Harris, who also worked on a shoestring, is virtually ignored. He signed Tony Currie; Bassett signed Vinnie Jones. That is the difference.

I also dislike intensely the daft idea, quite prevalent in S2, that his methods have any relevance in modern football. That is the philosophy that has our less sophisticated fans hollering gerritintbox and shoooooooot, rather than appreciating our excellent pass and move football. The “right way” as Tufty never tires of describing it. No doubt to much pent-up fury in S2, where they want it intbox, giving giant opposition centre backs and goalies heading and catching practice.

As the Beatles (and Stevie Wonder) sang: “Try to see it my way...”

Wally Downes. Wally Fucking Downes.

He probably said he played good football too. That’s also bollocks.

Bassett is very fond of himself. It’s time he realised that the game has moved on and he became something of an irrelevant novelty act quite a long time ago. Keep yourself to yourself please Mr. Bassett. You’ve had your turn. Proper football is having a go now.

I asked you for one moment ......... and thats what you lead with ........

Go on, just one moment, the goal, the win ....... go on

But it’s true. We hardly got a kick. No point in pretending otherwise.

Nilsen, Roger.
The S6 brigade had Nilsson, Roland.
But yeah.
