What a pro Chris Basham is:

"I got a call off Bash this morning saying he had to shoot up to Newcastle because his wife was just about to give birth. That was a change we didn't expect because the baby was due in the international break,"

...even planned his baby for the International Break! ;)

Wot a guy!

Congratulations to them all. Great news.

Nice one Bash lad, hope mother and baby are well!!!

The most talked about episode from Martin Allen's career at Queens Park Rangers was not a match he played in … but one that he missed!
It was on March 11th 1989. Rangers travelled north for a First Division fixture at Newcastle United and our squad stayed in a hotel overnight before the game.
Allen said: "I was sharing a room with our goalkeeper David Seaman. At two o'clock in the morning, David took a phone call from my dad saying that my wife Gabriella was about to give birth.

"I found out there was a flight back to London at 7.30am and I told our Assistant Manager Peter Shreeves. He said 'Before you leave, check that she's still in labour. And if you are going to go, then get on the plane and good luck. But check first.'
"I rang from the hotel at 6.00am and Gabriella was settling in at the Royal Berks Hospital. So I got the plane from Newcastle Airport and arrived at Heathrow about 8.30am. From there, I was in the hospital at 9.30am and our baby George was born at 12.15pm.

"I'll never forget the following Monday. I was just leaving for home after training when QPR Manager Trevor Francis handed me an envelope while I was getting in my car. I thought it was going to be a note of congratulations for having the baby. But it was a two week wages fine!
"It was quite shocking and disappointing. After that, my working relationship with Trevor broke down. I was eventually sold to West Ham a few months later.
"But I have no regrets about what happened. It was only human that I wanted to see the birth of my first child. Everyone has the right if they wish to do that - whether you are a footballer or whether you are a banker or a politician. It doesn't matter what you work as. You have that right.

As it should be, family comes first.

I am surprised he lives Newcastle though, I know he’s from up there but having been at Bolton, Blackpool and us for quite a while he’s spent either a lot of time away from home or done a lot of travelling.
Not that it’s a problem, but shows the dedication these fellas have.

Unless his wife was visiting relatives? The baby arrived earlier than expected. Like you say, if he does live that far north of us that’s some travelling he does

I'm fairly sure Bash lives locally? I recall him saying that he had bought a house here when he arrived, or was looking for a house. Maybe his mrs has just moved back to the North East for a few weeks until the baby was born, that's my guess and for her to be looked after her or Bash's parents.

Half a story not even a ex-pig , would fine him wages surely ? [Martin Allen story ]
Apparent Trev was a bit of a tyrant and that's how he ended up at pigsborough after the QPR players turned on him

I’m fairly sure it’s true. I remember the story coming out at the time.

I always thought Francis was a bit soft, so it might have been a case that he was trying to put down a bit of authority (and badly misjudged it).

I believe he lives in Stocksbridge / Penistone - makes sense I guess if he travels north a lot.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Bash. I hope Baby Bash and Mrs are both doing well. That’s the attendance figure up by one!

What ever happened to births being announced over the tannoy during matches?

or deaths?

I thought last season was one of the strangest I can remember of all time, it seemed like nearly every home match there were announcements of deaths and/or black armbands for some reason or other.

We lived in Nottingham when both of ours were born but I sent her back to live with her mother for a few weeks so that they would be born in Yorkshire.

Also meant that she had experienced support on hand, should she need it.

I remember a player once getting subbed off early so he could get to the hospital to see his wife.

Think it was D'Jaffo in a midweek game.

Ryan Colclugh at Wigan had the same thing earlier in the sason. Heard the news his wife was in labour from his dad in the stands and managed to squeeze in a goal just before getting subbed to go to the hospital.

I knew who you meant, I was referring to our wingers second name from the nineties just for some light hearted humour, it must’ve been a shite bit of humour, never mind! :(:)
I think we can both claim the title of shite humour delivery today!
